Measles case reported in Northern Virginia child. Check potential exposure sites and dates

Virginia health officials say they have identified a measles case in a preschool-age child in Northern Virginia. The child is somewhere between the ages of 0 to 4 years old, according to th Virginia Department of Health (VDH), and recently traveled internationally. Officials say the case is unrelated to another reported in a Northern Virginia child Jan. 11. Here’s where and when health officials say people may have been exposed: PM Pediatric Urgent Care, located at 2690 Prince William Parkway in Woodbridge – Tuesday, Jan. 13 from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Inova Children’s Emergency Department, located at 3300 Gallows Road in Falls Church -Thursday, Jan. 15 from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday, Jan. 16 from 8:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Inova Fairfax Hospital Women’s and Children’s Building, Floors 2-10, located at 3300 Gallows Road in Falls Church – Saturday, Jan. 17 at 2:30 a.m. to Sunday, Jan. 18 at 5 p.m. Measles is considered highly contagious and can be spread through the air when an infected person breathes, sneezes or coughs, VDH said in a release. It is also preventable with the Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine. This is Virginia’s third reported case of measles in 2026, two of which were in Northern Virginia and another in Central Virginia, according to the VDH measles dashboard. All three cases were in children between the ages of 0 and 4. The U.S. is currently on the verge of losing its measles elimination status. Health Jun 14, 2025 Passenger with measles arrived at Dulles and took Metro, DC Health warns Vaccines Jun 2, 2025 All international travelers should get measles vaccinations, CDC says Health May 21, 2025 Measles is very contagious. Here's how to avoid it What to do if you’re exposed Anyone who has not received a measles containing vaccine — either the the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine or a measles only vaccine — is at risk for contracting measles. People who fall into this category and have been exposed should contact their health care provider, VDH said. Anyone who has had two doses of a measles containing vaccine or was born before 1957 is considered protected and does not need to take any action, according to health officials. People who have only received one dose should still be protected but should talk to their healthcare provider about getting a second one in order to reach the highest possible level of protection, VDH said. Virginia residents who want to check their immunization status should call their healthcare provider or request their vaccination records through the VDH Immunization Record Request Form. For any additional questions about potential exposure, Virginia residents are encouraged to email epi_response@vdh.virginia.gov or contact their local health department. Immunocompromised people who may have been exposed should check with their doctor, VDH said, especially if symptoms start to develop. While 95% of kindergarteners in Virginia are vaccinated against measles, health officials said, infants are too young to be vaccinated and are at particularly high risk. People who are at risk and have been exposed should watch out for symptoms for 21 days after the exposure. If symptoms appear, isolate immediately and then call your healthcare provider, VDH said. If it is necessary to see the healthcare provider in person or go to the emergency room, call ahead of time so they can protect staff and other patients. What are the symptoms? Symptoms of measles develop over two stages. The first stage typically begins seven to 14 days after exposure. Here are some common symptoms, according to VDH: Fever over 101 degrees Runny nose Red, watery eyes Cough The second stage starts three to five days after the initial symptoms begin and is marked by a rash on the face, which then spreads to the rest of the body. A person with measles is contagious from four days before this rash appears until four days after it appeared, according to VDH.

Hundreds of DC-area students walk out of class to protest ICE

During fifth period at Walt Whitman high school in Bethesda, Maryland, dozens of students chose to walk out of class for about an hour of Tuesday’s school day. “This is the world we’re growing up in, and it’s really important that we are politically active,” said Dalia Rees, a junior at the school. Similar scenes played out at Montgomery Blair High and Dominion High in Sterling, Virginia. Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) and Loudoun County Public Schools have policies that allow students to peacefully demonstrate — and on Tuesday, hundreds of students exercised their rights, joining other walkouts at schools across the country. Those thousands of students nationwide protested the Trump administration, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and immigration enforcement that in recent weeks has turned violent. At Walt Whitman, Rees and her fellow junior Evan Schwartz told News4 they planned the demonstration to protest ICE specifically, after the shooting that killed a Minnesota mother in Minneapolis earlier this month. The students have demands for their school district. “One demand is that MCPS promises a policy of non-cooperation with ICE, and we’re hoping for Whitman to educate students about civil liberties. News4 reached out to MCPS, and a spokesperson shared a statement. “Our Board of Education and Superintendent have reaffirmed that our schools are safe spaces for every student, regardless of immigration status,” the statement reads in part. The statement goes on to say that the district has a step-by-step protocol if ICE should come onto campus, including verifying the visitors’ identity and obtaining any official documentation, including warrants and subpoenas. Still, students News4 spoke with on Tuesday are worried — especially those in the Latino community. “I have to have conversations with my parents, how are we going to make sure that something doesn’t happen?” said Mariana Spensley-Aguirre, a freshman at Walt Whitman High. “Do I have to carry an ID around that says that I’m a citizen?” Minnesota Jan 20 U.S. citizen says ICE took him from his Minnesota home in his underwear after warrantless search Immigration Jan 17 Federal officials investigating Renee Good's widow in shooting probe, sources say Department of Homeland Security Jan 17 Trump's DHS has shot 11 people during immigration enforcement operations since September The students at the Walt Whitman walkout told News4 that they will receive an unexcused absence for the walkout, and added that they got permission from their parents before participating. News4 has also reached out to ICE about the walkouts that took place in the D.C. area on Tuesday. We are waiting to hear back. Jonathan Kuminga’s return can’t lift Warriors to win over Raptors

After 16 consecutive DNP-CDs, Jonathan Kuminga returned to the court Tuesday night and put up 20 points. The out-of-favor Buddy Hield made all six of his three-pointers on his way to 25 points. But the Golden State Warriors starters didn’t play any defense and the Toronto Raptors shot 21-for-34 on three-pointers in a 145-127 win. The starting lineup seemed to be reeling without Jimmy Butler, who is out for the…

Warriors vs. Raptors player grades: Buddy Hield and Jonathan Kuminga catch fire

The Golden State Warriors began the post-Jimmy Butler III era on Tuesday and … well … it didn’t exactly go very well, as the Dubs were crushed by the Toronto Raptors 145-127. It perhaps wasn’t as bad as the score suggests though, as it was kind of a case of “one of those games.” The Raptors are the worst three-point shooting team in the NBA, yet shot 21-for-34 (61.8%) from deep, easily their best shooting…

Mike Dunleavy on trading Jimmy Butler: ‘I don’t envision that’

Talking to reporters before the Golden State Warriors’ game against the Toronto Raptors — and one night after the tragic ACL injury that befell Jimmy Butler, ending his season prematurely — Mike Dunleavy stated that he has no plans to trade Jimmy Butler’s contract before the February 6 trade deadline. “I don’t envision that,” Dunleavy said. “Now that you’ve brought it up, I’d say my vision for him is to…

It might once again be time to play Jonathan Kuminga

It’s an NBA truism that when one saga ends, a new one begins. Unfortunately for the Golden State Warriors, the second saga didn’t wait for the first one to conclude before dropping the clutch and speeding off. This week, and the next two, were supposed to be about trading Jonathan Kuminga. But that saga had not come close to reaching its resolution when the heartbreak of Monday night unfolded: after awkwardly…

Warriors vs. Raptors injury report: Al Horford out, Draymond Green questionable

The Golden State Warriors begin their post-Jimmy Butler III life tonight. News broke at midnight that Butler had sustained a torn ACL during the team’s Monday night win over the Miami Heat, which ends his season. The Warriors were playing their best basketball and rising in the standings. Now, they’re facing a new reality, and our first data point as to how they’ll perform will be offered up tonight. Unfortunately, they won’t have a full squad, as there are a few names joining Butler on the injury report. Here’s the full report for both the Warriors and their opponent, the Toronto Raptors. Warriors Out — Jimmy Butler III (right knee ACL tear) Barring a deal to move his contract, you’re going to see that line in every injury report for the rest of the season, and for half of next season, too. It hurts to write. Out — Al Horford (left toe injury management) Horford has been playing excellent basketball lately, but that doesn’t change the fact that he doesn’t play in back-to-backs. He played on Monday against the Heat, so he’s out tonight. Out — Seth Curry (left sciatic nerve irritation) The younger Curry has been out for quite a while, but he’ll be re-evaluated soon. Hopefully we can see him back on the court before long. Questionable — Draymond Green (right ankle sprain) Green missed Monday’s win while nursing an ankle injury. With Butler and Horford out, the Warriors defense could look very grim if Draymond isn’t able to play tonight. Questionable — Will Richard (right gluteal strain) Richard has started the last two games — on Monday for Green, and on Saturday for Butler. After some time out of the rotation, he’s really re-established himself as a core part of the team. He’ll presumably start tonight if he’s able to play. Questionable — Gui Santos (left ankle sprain) Santos has missed the last two games after injuring his ankle in Thursday’s win over the New York Knicks. Now that Butler is out of the equation, there’s a big role for him whenever he returns. Join the conversation! Raptors Out — RJ Barrett (left ankle sprain) Injuries have limited Barrett to just 23 games this year, and he’s missed the last five. Toronto is losing a lot of scoring with Barrett sidelined, as he’s averaging 19.6 points per game this season. Out — Jakob Poeltl (lower back strain) Poeltl hasn’t played in a month as he recovers from a back injury. He’s having a down year statistically — 9.7 points and 7.7 rebounds in 25.3 minutes per game — but is still a quality starting center whom the Warriors will be happy to not see. Out — Ja’Kobe Walter (right hip pointer) Fun fact: Poeltl and Walter are the only two players in NBA history whose first names begin with the letters J-A-K. Out — Collin Murray-Boyles (left thumb contusion) Murray-Boyles was the ninth overall pick in June’s draft, and the forward has played fairly well, averaging 7.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.0 assists in just 21.5 minutes per game in his rookie year. He’s dealt with some injuries, though, and this will be his eighth absence of the year. Enjoy the game, Dub Nation! It tips off at 7:00 p.m. PT on NBC Sports Bay Area.
