Mayor Wu projects 6% drop in commercial values, adding to Boston's budget strain
Boston’s commercial properties, struggling with high office vacancy rates, are projected to decline in value another 6% in the coming year, leaving the city’s residential taxpayers with a greater burden of funding the city’s operations. Lower valuations on many of Boston’s most expensive properties — like office towers in downtown and Back Bay — are challenging Mayor Michelle Wu’s goal of keeping city services in place while not forcing far larger tax bills on residents. Coast Guard, Newburyport authorities searching for missing person in Merrimack River
The U.S. Coast Guard and local authorities are searching the Merrimack River in Newburyport, Massachusetts, after a person was seen going under the water on Wednesday morning. The Coast Guard said it received a notification at 7:57 a.m. Wednesday of a person in the water off the coast of Newburyport. They said the person’s boat was tied up at a dock when it got loose, and the person entered the water in an attempt to recover it. A witness said they heard a person yelling for help, and then the yelling abruptly stopped. Rescue crews arrived at the scene at 8:04 a.m. and were continuing to search the water for the person as of 10 a.m. “According to witnesses, a person was seen clinging to the side of a small skiff boat in the river,” Newburyport police and fire said in a press release. “First responders located the boat drifting in the river, and are searching for the occupant.” Aerial photos from the scene showed multiple boats in the water and fire engines, state police cruisers and other emergency vehicles parked in what appeared to be a boatyard. A Coast Guard helicopter was also seen flying over the river. No further details were immediately available.
