Stephen Fulton vacates title, Carrington vs Castro upgraded
After grievously missing weight in last Saturday’s super featherweight debut against O’Shaquie Foster, Stephen Fulton has predictably vacated his WBC featherweight belt. What was originally an interim title defense between titlist Bruce Carrington and challenger Carlos Castro, the co-feature for Teofimo Lopez vs Shakur Stevenson on January 31st, will now have the full title on the line. Fulton (23-2, 8 KO) took the belt from Brandon Figueroa in their February rematch and immediately made a beeline for Foster, only to hit the scales at 132 and lethargically stagger his way to a wide decision loss. We’ll see where he ends up in the WBC’s next rankings update. The WBC’s alleged plan was to hold a sort of mini-tournament to determine the next mandatory challenger at 126, pitting Carrington (16-0, 9 KO) against Mateus Heita and Castro (30-3, 14 KO) against wayward former champ Rey Vargas in the semis. “Shu Shu” did his part, but the Vargas fight never materialized; Castro hasn’t seen action since flooring Fulton in a split decision loss two Septembers ago. Still, good fight. Castro has only ever lost to quality operators and two of his three defeats came via split decision.

‘Short list of people I wouldn’t step into the ring with’: Jake Paul wants no part of David Benavidez
While Jake Paul is currently slated to face a former unified heavyweight world champion in Anthony Joshua on Dec. 19, streaming live on Netflix, most believe it’s an unwinnable matchup for Paul (if the fight isn’t completely contrived). Paul, however, feels good about his chances against Joshua. There are however, a few names in the boxing game that Paul admits he absolutely does not want to face in the ring, starting with David Benavidez, and he explains to ESPN he won’t be calling him out any time soon. “There’s a very short list of people that I wouldn’t step into the ring with, and Benavidez is on that list,” Paul told ESPN, referring to the undefeated WBC light heavyweight champion.”That guy is different. His power, his speed, his cardio, his nonstop punching and relentless pressure,” Paul said. “Your punches don’t mean s— to him. He has giant forearms that go from the bottom of his hip to the top of his head. You can’t get through his guard.” So while Paul is preparing to face an even physically larger fighter in Joshua, Paul has enlisted the assistance of Lawrence Okolie and Jared Anderson to aid in his training camp. Paul remains steadfast in his belief that he can shock the world in this Joshua fight, and even goes as far to say that he believes his recent sparring sessions have been tougher than what he expects the Joshua fight to be. If that turns out to be the case, however unlikely, it would be a dramatic statement for Paul to make as a legitimate professional boxer.
