Browns add fast rising defensive coach to head coaching interview list

John Harbaugh to Browns? A few reasons Cleveland should be in the running at least

NBA Notebook: Early Celtics trade deadline preview
The NBA Trade Deadline falls one month from Monday on Feb. 5 as the new collective bargaining agreement, recent playoff format changes and a competitive landscape across both conferences likely sets up a seller's market across the league.

Now that Cleveland has officially moved on from Kevin Stefanski, they could choose to go about finding their next head coach in a variety of different ways. One specific thing that their new head man will absolutely, without a doubt, have to do is find a quarterback. As Andrew Berry recently said, the team doesn’t know who their starting quarterback will be in 2026, whether they’re already in the organization or outside of it. It seems that whoever they hire as the next head coach will have to be determined to find their ideal candidate almost immediately. Based on this ideology, three of the most realistic options could be: Kliff Kingsbury Kingsbury is a coach who takes a no-nonsense approach to the offense. He knows the type of players he needs, especially at quarterback, and knows how to elevate them with an innovative, air-raid-esque scheme. He’s also a coach who’s known to be aggressive when it comes to finding his guy at quarterback. His expertise from a passing game standpoint would also be a breath of fresh air for a Browns team that’s relied heavily on the run for almost a decade now. We’ve all seen what he recently did in Washington with Jayden Daniels, and it would be nice to see something like that play out in Cleveland. Mike McCarthy Similar to Kingsbury, McCarthy has a reputation around the league of being very specific about the quarterback position. He’s someone who usually won’t stop searching until he gets who he wants to lead the offense. This is a completely different mindset from what Kevin Stefanski had, and it ultimately led to his demise in Cleveland, though he wasn’t the only one at fault. McCarthy has a lot of fans and a lot of haters out there, but his ability to lead and be a winner is undeniable at the NFL level. Bringing in a veteran head coach with a winning past would also be something new in Northeast Ohio. Matt Nagy Nagy has shown the ability to be incredibly effective as an offensive playcaller, but he needs a legitimate quarterback to do so. He’s the type of offensive mind who wouldn’t be able to sleep until he has a quarterback that he knows can be successful in his offensive scheme. Though it didn’t work out for him as a head coach in Chicago, he still went 34-31 in his four seasons there and won the NFL’s Coach of the Year Award in 2018. Nagy is still seen as an excellent offensive-minded coach, and there’s a reason that he’s been to so many Super Bowls as an offensive coordinator. If Cleveland hires any one of these three coaches, I truly believe that the Browns will have their next legitimate quarterback within their first two years with the organization. NFL rules, Browns candidate list may be delaying interviews
Over 24 hours ago, the Cleveland Browns fired HC Kevin Stefanski. Since then, we’ve discussed that defensive coaches shouldn’t be overlooked, the thought that an offensive mind must be the hire, a player’s wife’s shot at Stefanski, and more. The Browns job may not be highly ranked, but Stefanski sure seems to be in demand. Around the league, teams are lining up interviews with head coaches and, for those with openings, general manager positions. The Tennessee Titans, New York Giants, and Atlanta Falcons have multiple scheduled or are in the process of being scheduled. Cleveland, the first team to make a move on “Black Monday,” should be next as the Giants and Titans fired their coaches in-season and the Falcons got a jump start on Sunday night. Since the Browns were last in the NFL coaching carousel back in 2020, the NFL has put rules in place to try to slow down the process, which could be impacting schedules for Cleveland and potential candidates: Teams will start requesting interviews with candidates early this week, and teams can interview candidates on teams who aren’t playing in the wild-card round beginning Wednesday (for everyone else playing Sunday). In-person interviews can’t begin until Jan. 19 unless the coach is not employed by a team, and a second in-person interview can’t take place until Jan. 26. On top of that, the Rooney Rule still applies and requires two interviews now to satisfy. A helpful graphic: Here’s an illustrated chart showing the NFL’s early head coach interview schedule. No *in-person* interviews with coaches who are currently employed by NFL teams are allowed until Jan. 19. pic.twitter.com/L1wTTL7vOi— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) January 6, 2026 Given the rules and no news of Browns interviews being set up, at least so far, it is fair to guess that Cleveland’s list of candidates is heavy on coaches playing in the wild-card round. The following teams and coordinators are unavailable at this time: NFC Playoffs Los Angeles Rams – Mike LaFleur, Chris Shula Carolina Panthers – Brad Idzik, Ejiro Evero Green Bay Packers – Adam Stenavich, Jeff Hafley Chicago Bears – Declan Doyle, Dennis Allen San Francisco 49ers – Klay Kubiak, Robert Saleh Philadelphia Eagles – Kevin Patullo, Vic Fangio AFC Playoffs Buffalo Bills – Joe Brady, Bobby Babich Jacksonville Jaguars – Grant Udinski, Anthony Campanile Los Angeles Chargers – Greg Roman, Jesse Minter New England Patriots – Josh McDaniels, Terrell Williams Houston Texans – Nick Caley, Matt Burke Pittsburgh Steelers – Arthur Smith, Teryl Austin The Browns could interview coordinators from the two top seeds: the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks. Sean Payton has Joe Lombardi and Vance Joseph leading his staff, while Mike Macdonald has Klint Kubiak and Aden Durde as his top coordinators. For now, Cleveland fans sit and wait for news of who might take the next head coaching job.
