Champions League Matchday Preview: Bayern Munich vs. Union Saint-Gilloise

Bayern Munich Vincent Kompany warns of looking past underdog Union Saint-Gilloise
Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany does not think his squad should take Union Saint-Gilloise lightly. If the Bavarians can win, it would help position Bayern Munich to be in a position to secure a top two position in the Champions League table. “They want to dictate the game and have possession of the ball in the league. But they thrive even more when they’re the underdogs, like in the Champions League. We have to be careful,” said Kompany (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “I would love to achieve (a top two spot), no doubt. But the example of Paris Saint-Germain from last season has changed a lot. From the knockout stage onwards, it’s a different tournament. We also beat Leverkusen last year, even though we had to go through the playoffs. I want to achieve it because we’re close now. We’ve earned it so far. It’s incredibly difficult to reach the top eight; that’s somewhat underestimated. For that reason alone, it would be great.” Kompany has a history vs. Union Saint-Gilloise — and not a good one, either. As a manager, Kompany has one win and four losses against Union Saint-Gilloise from his time with RSC Anderlecht. “You can’t really compare. It was a different time. We’re in a different situation. I was one of the first to say in a press conference that they were doing a very good job. It was our first game with Anderlecht after the Corona lockdown. They had just been promoted and had players like Deniz Undav up front. They’re doing a fantastic job and have very talented players. They’re a dangerous team and they take advantage of their underdog role, I have big respect for what they’re doing,” Kompany said. As for his current squad, Kompany did not want to tip his hand on what he might do with Joshua Kimmich, but did give an update on Jamal Musiala. “We’re constantly talking to Joshua. He was very positive in training today. We have to pay close attention to how he’s feeling. We’ll see how he feels tomorrow and then we’ll see who starts,” Kompany said. “(Musiala) still has a smile on his face. There’s a plan in place for him, but we’re very flexible. Every day after training, we’re in constant contact with the medical department. We’re only three days further than we were against Leipzig. “We’re taking it very easy with him. It’s great that Hiroki Itō, Alphonso Davies, and Jamal Musiala are back. They give us a lot of energy. Last year we won the title for Harry Kane, Eric Dier, and the others because it was their first title. This year it’s for Jamal, Alphonso and Hiroki Itō who made their comebacks after a long time.” If you are looking for more Bayern Munich and German national team coverage, check out the latest episodes of Bavarian Podcast Works, which you can get on Acast, Spotify, Apple, or any leading podcast distributor… Join the conversation!
