NSA case against Sonam Wangchuk ‘illegal and lacks merit’, says wife Gitanjali Angmo
Activist Sonam Wangchuk’s detention under the National Security Act is “illegal” and has “no merit”, which is why the Union government was repeatedly seeking fresh court dates in the appeal against it, his wife Gitanjali Angmo was quoted as alleging by PTI on Sunday.“The solicitor general of India, who represents the Union [government], always keeps taking dates after dates, employing delay tactics, because I think they have realised that there is no merit in the case,” she said in an interview to the news agency. Angmo added that Wangchuk should already be out of prison due to what she described as serious “procedural lapses” by the authorities.Police firing and violence had broken out in Leh on September 24 during protests seeking statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. Demonstrators clashed with and threw stones at the police, and set fire to the Bharatiya Janata Party office and a police vehicle.Wangchuk was arrested in Leh on September 26, two days after four persons were killed in the police firing. She has contended that the...Read more

From the memoir: How Mallu Swarajyam and her comrades fought against gender exploitation
In the initial days of the Sangham’s operations, the main agenda was to campaign for social reforms. The plight of women was miserable both at home and in society, making it a priority for the Sangham. This focus led to many women joining the movement. As the movement intensified into an armed struggle against the feudal lords, women’s participation grew organically, with many joining the dalams. In feudal households like ours, women had limited freedom, primarily confined to retaining their property. The purdah system was, fortunately, on the decline, but women in ordinary households still faced all sorts of hardships. As we walked the streets, doing our work for the Sangham, we could hear the cries of women from almost every house. Except for shedding tears, women had no other way to cope with the physical and verbal abuse inflicted by their menfolk. We believed the only way to free women from this situation was to involve them in the Sangham’s work, as it did its best to uphold its belief that men and women were equal. The party focused on helping women break the shackles imposed by family traditions and societal norms. Women felt compelled to participate in the movement to achieve...Read more

‘Start the week with a film: Unshowy thriller ‘Kalamkaval’ sees Mammotty in a shocking role
All-American hero Henry Fonda shocked his fans when he played a child-killing monster and rapist in Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in the West (1968). Malayalam acting legend Mammootty had already taken a dark turn in films such as Vidheyan and Bramayugam, but his character in Kalamkaval: The Venom Beneath is beyond the pale.Kurup writer Jithin K Jose’s directorial debut begins in 2005. Stanley (Mammootty) lies to his wife and checks into a lodge with his lover. His conversation with the woman he promises to marry after divorcing his spouse is ordinary, banal even – until he flashes that famous smile and says, “The greatest satisfaction comes from killing a human.”Viewers have been put on high alert. The beloved and brilliant actor, capable of playing just about anybody, is going to direct his charisma and intelligence towards portraying a depraved serial killer.Stanley uses his low-key and yet ample charm to reel in a host of unsuspecting women. Several years later, Kerala Police officer Jayakrishnan (Vinayakan) starts investigating the disappearances of numerous women. The trail leads to Stanley, but this being a Malayalam police procedural, ever so gradually.Kalamkaval is out on Sony LIV following a successful theatrical run in Kerala. Written by Jose and Jishnu Sreekumar, the film borrows from the...Read more
