2026 Oscar nominations: Expert’s predictions in 11 key categories

By Glenn Whipp, Los Angeles Times The holidays are over, but the Christmas Adventurers no doubt are still celebrating. The “Marty Supreme” blimp rests, for now, in its hanger. Chloé Zhao is clearing her mind. And I still have that Neil Diamond song stuck in my head. All of which brings us to the unveiling of nominations for the 98th Oscars on Thursday. Might Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” or Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” tie or even break the record for most nods for a single movie? Fourteen is the magic number, held by “All About Eve,” “Titanic” and “La La Land.” Somewhere, James Cameron is clutching his crown tightly. Honoree Ryan Coogler accepts the Director Award for “Sinners” onstage during The Critics Choice Association’s 8th annual celebration of Black Cinema& Television at Fairmont Century Plaza on Dec. 09, 2025, in Los Angeles, California. (Randy Shropshire/Getty Images North America/TNS) Here are my predictions in key categories. Picture “Bugonia” “Frankenstein” “Hamnet” “It Was Just an Accident” “Marty Supreme” “One Battle After Another” “The Secret Agent” “Sentimental Value” “Sinners” “Train Dreams” Possible surprise: “Weapons” Possible snub: “It Was Just an Accident” No “Wicked: For Good”? No “Avatar: Fire and Ash”? The pair of high-profile sequels failed to live up to their predecessors, critically and commercially, leaving the door open for the academy’s international contingent — 24% of Oscar voters live outside the United States — to wave the flags of their countries. The last two years we’ve had two international features nominated for best picture. “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone of Interest” made the cut in 2024; “Emilia Pérez” and “I’m Still Here” found their way in last year. It’s possible we see a record three this year: France’s “It Was Just an Accident,” Brazil’s “The Secret Agent” and Norway’s “Sentimental Value.” Voters do have other options for the back end of the 10-picture slate. “F1” looks on track to earn Oscar nods for film editing, sound and visual effects. Maybe that below-the-line love catapults it in. Zach Cregger’s “Weapons” earned a place at the Producers Guild, even with writer-director Cregger off filming “Resident Evil,” removing him from the awards circuit. Perhaps Aunt Gladys has been busy casting spells in her bedroom, working her magic on the film’s behalf, though I’m not sure how she’d obtain a personal item from more than 10,000 voters. She’d have to be busier than Diane Warren. Director Paul Thomas Anderson, “One Battle After Another” Ryan Coogler, “Sinners” Jafar Panahi, “It Was Just an Accident” Josh Safdie, “Marty Supreme” Chloé Zhao, “Hamnet” Possible surprise: Guillermo del Toro, “Frankenstein” Possible snub: Panahi The Directors Guild nominated Anderson, Coogler, Safdie, Zhao and del Toro. But the Oscar field has included one international director for seven straight years, making it likely that dissident filmmaker Panahi, a vocal critic of Iran’s authoritarian regime, earns a nomination for his blistering movie about resistance. That spot could also go to Joachim Trier, the director and co-writer of “Sentimental Value,” a family drama that sneaks in some sharp satire about the sorry state of filmmaking these days. Actor Timothée Chalamet, “Marty Supreme” Leonardo DiCaprio, “One Battle After Another” Ethan Hawke, “Blue Moon” Michael B. Jordan, “Sinners” Wagner Moura, “The Secret Agent” Possible surprise: Jesse Plemons, “Bugonia” Possible snub: Moura If Chalamet had won last year for playing Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown,” he would have become the youngest lead actor Oscar winner in history. That he lost to Adrien Brody (“The Brutalist”), still the only actor to win the trophy under the age of 30 (for “The Pianist”), adds a nice little twist to this bit of Oscar trivia. As it is, Chalamet seems well-positioned to eradicate voters’ bias against all the young dudes, his charismatic performance keeping you in the corner of “Marty Supreme’s” often…

The tragic fall from fame and grisly death of Nickelodeon star Kianna Underwood

Former Nickelodeon child actress Kianna Underwood, who died in a grisly hit-and-run accident in Brooklyn Friday, was remembered by friends and neighbors as a kind and talented young girl who had fallen on hard times after her years of childhood fame. “She used to model for me when she was 5 and 6 years old. I had a modeling agency… She was beautiful and I just snapped her up,” said T.C. Jackson, a resident at the…

Apuestas audaces,…

Milan Fashion Week: Five trends and buzzwords from menswear previews for next winter

By COLLEEN BARRY, Associated Press Fashion Writer MILAN (AP) — The Olympic spirit permeated Milan Fashion Week, closing Monday, from Canadian designers Dsquared2 cheeky tribute to the Games, Emporio Armani’s in-store parade of Team Italia’s uniforms and Ralph Lauren’s celebrity-packed runway show, strong on ski resort wear as it prepares to outfit Team USA. Related Articles Bruce Springsteen dedicates song to Renee Good and says ICE should ‘get the f— out of Minneapolis’ 2026 Oscar nominations: Expert’s predictions in 11 key categories The tragic fall from fame and grisly death of Nickelodeon star Kianna Underwood Green Day to open 60th Super Bowl with anniversary ceremony celebrating generations of MVPs Amanda Seyfried makes her move in ‘The Testament of Ann Lee’ Fashion always reflects what is going on in the world at large, and the front-row chatter went beyond silhouettes, notably streamlined at Prada, and striking, inventive accessories, like Dsquared2’s hybrid winter footwear, to questions of diversity and sustainability. Some highlights from four days of mostly menswear previews for Fall-Winter 2026-27: Olympic Spirit The Italian fashion house Dsquared2, founded by Canadian twins Dean and Dan Caten, made a strong, if ironic, case for why they would have been a fun choice as Team Canada’s official Olympic outfitter for the Feb. 6-22 Games. Fellow Canadian Hudson Williams, the actor starring in the buzzy series “Heated Rivalry’’ about a gay hockey love story, opened the show, strutting down a fake-snow-covered staircase wearing a ripped double denim jacket and sparkly racing number. (AP Photo/Antonio Calanni) Dsquared2 was a gold-medal contender for best footwear of the season. For women, the twins created a hybrid floating high heel that snaps into a sturdy ski boot at the ankle. The brand created a similar mashup for men. The designers played with Olympic imagery with their usual irreverence, including an intarsia Gold medal on a ski sweater, yet mindful of the International Olympic Committee’s strictly enforced copyrights. Ralph Lauren presented a much more patrician approach to mountaineering in its stately Milan palazzo, with a mélange of colorful patterned knits and cozy fleece jackets layered with puffers and flannel that evoked the brand’s wholesome American heritage. Shown to an intimate celebrity crowd that included Nick Jonas, Tom Hiddleston and Noah Schnapp, the collection offered a cozy entrée to the Olympic season, even as news from home was anything but reassuring. “As a designer you feel the vibrations in the world. Living in New York City and traveling around the world, you feel the vibrations, and if you are sensitive to that, you develop an ear or a feel for the clothes that you think you’re going to do the next season,” founder Ralph Lauren said in a social media campaign before the show. Hats off at Prada Prada’s co-creative directors Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons explored the range of men’s headwear, from berets to fedoras, made foldable as if origami, that when flattened could be snapped onto the back of outerwear. Runway highlights included a modular men’s cape that fit over coats and jackets, giving a layer of protection and utility. Men’s dress shirts had T-shirt necklines and buttoned down the back; exaggeratedly long and purposely worn cuffs protruded from jacket sleeves. A model wears a creation as part of the Prada Fall/Winter 2026-2027 Men’s collection presented in Milan, Italy, Sunday, Jan. 18, 2026. (AP Photo/Luca Bruno) The ultra-slim silhouette of base layer car coats had fashionistas talking, but Miuccia Prada was unapologetic: “That’s fashion.’’ “Talking about intellectual honesty, we are working for a brand that sells expensive clothes to possibly rich people, and so you…

Fun-loving Kiwi Campbell Wright gives the US hope for its first biathlon Olympic medal

By MARTHA BELLISLE The U.S. has never won an Olympic medal in biathlon, the only winter sport where that’s the case. The drought could come to an end next month at the Winter Olympics. The team brought on Campbell Wright, a rising star and dual citizen from New Zealand who combined fast skiing and precision shooting to win two world championship silver medals last year and has had strong results this season. In addition, the team has a homecourt advantage, of sorts: Their Italian head coach, Armin Auchentaller, grew up in Antholz, the village that’s hosting the Olympic biathlon competitions. His assistant coach and support staff are also from the region, ensuring the team has the inside scoop on the ski trails, snow, climate, food and housing. “We feel Antholz is almost a second home to us,” said U.S. Biathlon CEO Jack Gierhart. “Armin made it easy for us to operate there. That will enable our athletes to focus and feel relatively relaxed, which is really important in this level of competition.” FILE – U.S. Coach Armin Auchentaller looks on at the shooting range of the World Cup of Biathlon in Oberhof, Germany, Thursday Jan. 8, 2026. (Jennifer Brückner/dpa via AP, File) Winning athlete and coach Wright said he trusts his fitness and training as he heads to the Games, where the pressure will be on him to perform. “I think having success in the past just gives me confidence because I’ve already done more than I thought I could do in this sport, so the way I see it anything extra is just cream,” he told The Associated Press. Trump isn’t on the list How Olympians think about success and failure and what we can learn from them Ukraine’s young skiers practice in a bombed-out Olympic training base Has figure skating reached the limits of human performance? Auchentaller said working with Wright has been one of the most rewarding experiences of his career. “From the very start, you could tell he had something special — not just raw talent, but that spark of joy when he moved, competed, trained. That early talent was obvious,” Auchentaller said. “But what made working with him truly remarkable was how quickly he combined that talent with professionalism.” Wright will be joined by Olympic newbie Maxime Germain and Paul Schommer, who is competing in his second Games, while Sean Doherty will race in his fourth. On the women’s side, Joanne Reid returns to competition after two years off and heads to her third Olympics. Teammate Deedra Irwin returns for her second and two new members, Margie Freed and Lucinda Anderson, will make their Olympic debut. Who is Campbell Wright? Wright, a 23-year-old from Wanaka, New Zealand, was born and raised Down Under by American parents who emigrated there in the 1990s. He spent his early years at the Snow Farm cross-country ski center, learned biathlon in Europe and raced for New Zealand at the Beijing Olympics. Seeking support from a seasoned team, his dual citizenship allowed him to join the U.S. in 2023. That support has helped him to thrive. In February 2025, he became the first U.S. biathlete to win two medals at one world championship event, taking home back-to-back silvers in the sprint and pursuit competitions in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. They were the first U.S. world medals since Susan Dunklee won silver in 2020. She also won silver and Lowell Bailey gold in 2017. Auchentaller said he was proud but not surprised by Wright’s performance. “I knew that beneath his talent lay a core of grit, a fearless heart, and a grounded, simple work ethic,” Auchentaller said. “His success didn’t feel like luck or a one-off; it felt like the natural outcome of years of hard, intelligent work, fueled by genuine love for what he does. Watching him step onto that podium, I saw a young man’s passion and dedication pay off — and I felt fortunate to…
