Blue Jays Insider Provides Major Update on Pursuit of Bichette & Tucker
The Toronto Blue Jays could be the clear winners of the offseason.Toronto has already added pitchers Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce to the rotation and Tyler Rogers to the bullpen. However, the Blue Jays haven’t added a bat yet. But Toronto remains interested in Bo Bichette, Kyle Tucker, and even Alex Bregman, whose name has come up as a potential fit for the Blue Jays.Blue Jays insider Shi Davidi of Sportsnet reported on Friday that Toronto remains engaged with Bichette and Tucker.“They remain engaged on Bo Bichette and Kyle Tucker and have kept their options open across that front, buoyed by a returning group that’s both capable and positionally versatile,” Davidi wrote. If the Blue Jays can land either Bichette or Tucker, it would be a major get for Toronto. Davidi reports that the Blue Jays are well-positioned to land one of them.“And though the Blue Jays tried to manage expectations at the winter meetings, where GM Ross Atkins said adding both impact to the bullpen and “another position player will be very difficult to do,” they’re positioned well in a market segment yet to really move. A destination top free agents are likely to check in with, at least, before acting,” Davidi added.Blue Jays Could Land Multiple BatsTop MLB insider Jeff Passan of ESPN expects the Blue Jays to land one of those three, and potentially multiple of them.“I don’t think the Blue Jays are done,” Passan said to Michael Kay. “I think they’re gonna get a big bat. Not sure if that’s Kyle Tucker or Alex Bregman or Bo Bichette or maybe multiple of them. The Blue Jays right now are in a position where they are willing to spend, they feel like they have a window here, and they are going to take advantage of Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s prime years.”If Toronto does land two of Tucker, Bichette, and Bregman, it would be a major offseason for Toronto. And, it would make them one of the World Series favorites. With Tucker and Bichette unsigned, perhaps the Blue Jays offer them both short-term high AAV deals to get both of them done.Toronto Building a World Series ContenderThe Blue Jays lost in Game 7 of the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the team is looking to build on that.Toronto has been active this offseason, and Blue Jays owner Edward Rogers said the team wants to remain competitive.“I’d say what we saw through the playoffs was that Bo performed well through the World Series run,” Rogers said to Toronto Star’s Gregor Chisholm. “But so many of our players came up, and I find teams that have deep Butds. Obviously, the stars shine. but a lot of other people need to shine to be a competitive team. And we have amazing depth.”Toronto has done a good job this offseason building a true contender. But, adding a bat appears to be the next big focus, and Toronto could land multiple bats. Like Heavy Sports's content? Be sure to follow us. Yankees Manager Aaron Boone Sends Parting Message to Luke Weaver After Mets Signing
The New York Yankees haven’t been all that busy to begin the offseason, much to the dismay of fans. In fact, the most notable moves involving the team have revolved around the players they have lost, with one of their latest departures being veteran relief pitcher Luke Weaver. After struggling down the stretch of the 2025 campaign, the Yankees opted to let Weaver hit the open market, where he signed a two-year, $22 million contract with the team’s crosstown rivals, the New York Mets. In the wake of his departure, Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone sent the talented pitcher a parting message as he embarks on his next journey.Aaron Boone Bids Farewell to Luke WeaverWeaver latched on with the Yankees late in the 2023 season, and he ended up turning him into a crucial piece of the team’s bullpen in 2024. In 62 appearances, Weaver posted a 7-3 record with a 2.89 ERA, four saves, and 103 strikeouts. He was even better during the team’s run to the World Series that year, as he had a 1.76 ERA over 15.1 innings of high-leverage work.In 2025, things didn’t go as well for Weaver. While his numbers were still solid (4-4, 3.62 ERA, 8 SV, 72 K), he fell apart down the stretch of the season, to the point where he was virtually unusable for Boone in the playoffs. As a result, it seemed unlikely that the two sides would reunite in free agency this offseason.Sure enough, Weaver bolted for the Mets, where he will now join another former Yankees reliever, Devin Williams, at the back of their bullpen. Losing Weaver hurts, especially since he signed with the Mets, but Boone isn’t holding a grudge against his former star pitcher, revealing that he was happy to see him sign a well-earned contract.“He got a really good deal that he earned,” Boone said of Weaver. “When we got him it seemed like not a big move at the time late in the ’23 season — to turn into the reliever and the role he ended up having for us. He threw a lot of really big games and productive games over the last couple of years — credit to him for going out there and making a little alter to his career and it truly paying dividends for him.”Yankees Need to Start Making Some Additions this Offseason GettyNew York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman The departure of Weaver creates another hole that the Yankees’ front office needs to focus on filling this offseason. To this point, New York has largely stood pat, watching teams across the American League East, mainly the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays, make some serious upgrades. In order to ensure they remain one of the top teams in the division, the Yanks have to give their roster an infusion of talent. To this point, nothing has materialized, but there is still a lot of time for New York to get its work done this offseason. The level of urgency needs to be increased, though, or else the front office could risk missing out on all of its top targets. With Weaver gone, look for the Yankees to up the ante and begin making a serious push to bring some new faces to town in the coming weeks. Like Heavy Sports's content? Be sure to follow us. Alex Caruso Replaces Johnny Manziel as College GameDay Guest Picker
ESPNâs âCollege GameDayâ made a notable, late change ahead of Saturdayâs College Football Playoff matchup between No. 7 Texas A&M and No. 10 Miami. Oklahoma City Thunder guard Alex Caruso is now listed as the showâs guest picker, replacing former Aggies quarterback Johnny Manziel, who had been expected to fill the role. ESPN has not publicly shared a reason for the swap, and Manziel had not publicly addressed it as of Saturday morning. The timing adds extra intrigue because the game is a high-leverage first-round CFP spot: Miami vs. Texas A&M kicks at 12 p.m. ET from Kyle Field on ABC/ESPN, with the winner advancing to the Cotton Bowl on Dec. 31 to face Ohio State. Alex Caruso Steps In After Johnny Manziel Is Removed From the Guest Picker Spot Early Saturday, a âCollege GameDayâ broadcast graphic indicated Caruso as the guest picker for the Aggiesâ CFP game, a change that quickly caught fire online because Manziel was the original name attached to the segment. Multiple outlets covering the show noted the same thing: no explanation from ESPN, and no immediate public comment from Manziel about why heâs no longer in the role. For Texas A&M fans, itâs a surprising twist because Manziel is one of the biggest stars in program history. He won the Heisman Trophy in 2012, and his Texas A&M run remains a defining chapter of the schoolâs modern football brand. Caruso, while a big name in his own right and an NBA champion, left fans puzzled why a basketball player replaced one of the most iconic football players in program history on the broadcast. College Gameday guest picker Alex Caruso has arrived ðð pic.twitter.com/oraypEhuQf — TexAgs (@TexAgs) December 20, 2025 Why Did ESPN Replace Johnny Manziel with Alex Caruso? While no official statement has been provided by ESPN nor Manziel on why the media company chose to bring Caruso on set, there may be hints on Manziel’s social media profiles. Manziel posted on his Instagram that he was at the Jake Paul Anthony Joshua fights last night, showing videos on his IG stories being close to the ring, and also showing he may have been celebrating the event in other ways. What the Swap Means for Texas A&M Fans and the GameDay Spotlight Even without Manziel, Caruso isnât a random fill-in. Heâs an Aggies alum and a College Station native, and he has turned into a major pro success story after going undrafted. Caruso won an NBA title with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020 and later won a second championship with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2025. That background matters for the âGameDayâ vibe: the guest picker slot is part football analysis, part crowd theater. Manziel would have brought the âJohnny Footballâ nostalgia and controversy buzz; Caruso brings a different kind of energy, local ties, and the credibility of a current star on a winning NBA team. The bigger point: the show now has a new face representing Texas A&M right as the Aggies try to capitalize on a rare national stage moment. Kickoff Time, TV Info and CFP Stakes for Texas A&M vs Miami Hereâs the basic setup, because itâs part of why this guest-picker change is drawing so much attention: Matchup: No. 10 Miami at No. 7 Texas A&M When: Saturday, 12 p.m. ET Where: Kyle Field (College Station, Texas) TV/Stream: ABC/ESPN And the stakes are straightforward: itâs win-or-go-home. Texas A&M and Miami are playing for a spot in the next round, with the bracket path leading to a Dec. 31 Cotton Bowl date against Ohio State for the winner. New York Post+1 If ESPN or Manziel provides an explanation for the switch later Saturday, that becomes the obvious next layer of this story, especially with how heavily the CFP spotlight magnifies any last-minute change tied to a marquee name.
