COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Boeing has sent $50,000 in grant money to Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center to support a military spouse career program, according to a spokesperson with Mt. Carmel. According to the organization's website, the MilSpouse Program provides direct support to spouses, including career readiness workshops, networking opportunities, resource referrals, and volunteer positions. “Often times, the sacrifices of spouses supporting service members go unrecognized,” said COL. (Ret) Bob McLaughlin, executive director of Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center, in a press release. “From moving city to city and putting their careers on the back burner to gaps in their resumes as they hold down the homefront — anything we can do to support our military spouses is an absolute honor.” Mt. Carmel says Boeing has supported skills development and rehabilitation for veterans and their spouses through about $15.6 million in funding. By Kevin Liptak, Alayna Treene, Kylie Atwood, Zachary Cohen, Natasha Bertrand, Adam Cancryn, CNN (CNN) — Flying home this month from an extended Christmas vacation in Palm Beach, President Donald Trump was momentarily taken aback when a reporter asked him about the ice-covered island he’s openly trying to annex. “How did we come up to Greenland?” he asked, incredulously, on January 4. “We’ll worry about Greenland in about two months. Let’s talk about Greenland in 20 days.” As it turns out, it took far less than two months for everyone to be talking about Greenland. And the president himself is driving the conversation. What began during his first term as a novel — if, at least in the minds of some advisers, not entirely serious — bid to control the massive Arctic landmass has turned into a fixation that is causing the worst crisis between the United States and Europe in generations. The sudden escalation in the early weeks of this year of Trump’s efforts to seize control of Greenland has left European allies badly shaken and sent his own aides rushing to develop policies that would fulfill his widening threats, even as some are worried the president might be taking things too far in asserting the US will settle for nothing less than total control of the country. While Trump’s team is largely aligned with him on the importance of having US control of Greenland for national security reasons, many of his top advisers are not on the same page about the best way to achieve it. “We don’t want to make it a state,” one Trump adviser said. “But do we want an alliance with them? No question about it.” Even as Trump ratchets up his aggressive rhetoric about wanting to annex the country, and refuses to rule out military means to do so, several officials are wary of such a drastic step. Instead, the preference among many of Trump’s allies going forward is that the president uses the tariff threat as a negotiating tool, creating an opening for more concessions from the Europeans and resolving it all in an “Art of the Deal”-style negotiation. “They believe they can try to pressure Denmark into a deal, even if it doesn’t lead to ceding the entire territory,” another source familiar with the discussions said. “Having some sort of cooperative control of Greenland would accomplish the same goal.” White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said in a statement for this story that “The entire administration is prepared to execute any plan to acquire Greenland that the President chooses.” “President Trump leads on all foreign policy, and he was not elected to preserve the status quo,” she said. “Many of this President’s predecessors recognized the strategic logic of acquiring Greenland, but only President Trump has had the courage to pursue this seriously.” At least some European leaders still hold out hope such a deal is possible. After conversations with Trump this weekend, some officials said the president appeared receptive to their clarifications on why some European nations were sending troops to Greenland. According to a senior British official, Trump conceded in a phone call with Prime Minister Keir Starmer that he may have been given “bad information” on the European deployment of troops to Greenland. One European official said NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, a Trump confidant, seems convinced a deal is possible to give the president an off-ramp, and has been raising the possibility privately of a renegotiation of the 1951 agreement between the US, Denmark and Greenland, potentially with some strong guarantees that Chinese investments in Greenland would be prohibited. By Haley Britzky, CNN (CNN) — A military recruiter in Minnesota, pointing to fears over the ongoing ICE operations in Minneapolis, promoted joining the National Guard to high school students highlighting a program that can offer the immediate family of service members some protection against deportation. The email, sent last week with the subject line “I know [it] is scary out there,” directly addressed ICE detentions. “All of you have heard about how ICE and how they are taking people without any consideration. … If you are born here and you are 17yrs old, and in a position, like many, where your parents may not be documented. They need you to help!” the email said. The email pointed to the Parole in Place, or PIP, a program that is run through US Citizenship and Immigration Services. The program is not necessarily guaranteed; it offers parents, spouses, and children of service members protection from deportation on a case-by-case basis, in one-year increments, the USCIS website says. As of fiscal year 2025 it took an average of 4.5 months to process Parole in Place requests. Tensions have flared in Minneapolis in recent weeks as protestors have faced off with federal law enforcement amid an immigration crackdown by the Trump administration, particularly after the killing of 37-year-old Renee Good earlier this month. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Monday that more than 10,000 “criminal illegal aliens” have been arrested in Minneapolis, though CNN could not independently verify that number. One source familiar with the recruiting email told CNN it was sent to roughly 200 students at at least one high school in the Minneapolis area. The email immediately caused confusion and concern among the students who received it, the source said. CNN attempted to contact the recruiter who sent the email, but did not receive a response. Maj. Andrea Tsuchiya, a Minnesota National Guard spokesperson, acknowledged the email adding that PIP cannot be used until after someone enlists and while the military “may assist with the process … it is driven by the service member and often requires a lawyer.” “There was no command directive to share information about Parole in Place, but recruiters often do share information about programs that individuals are eligible for either during the recruiting process or after enlistment,” Tsuchiya said. The Pentagon referred questions on Parole in Place to USCIS. USCIS did not immediately respond to a request for comment. There have previously been concerns in the military about promoting the program, given the Defense Department does not have control over who is admitted or approved. The Marine Corps, for example, told recruiters last year to stop promoting the program or “imply that the Marine Corps can secure immigration relief for applicants or their families,” a Marine Corps spokesperson previously told Military.com. Recruiters often point potential recruits to programs and benefits that could make a difference to them individually during conversations about joining the military. One recruiter familiar with the Parole in Place program, however, told CNN it would be more effective for a recruiter to speak with school officials about the program before going directly to the students. “The problem is the recruiter leads his email with the threat of ICE taking people ‘without any consideration,’” the recruiter who spoke to CNN said. “He then goes on to explain it’s basically the student’s job to protect their parents by enlisting. That’s intimidating, it’s predatory, and in my opinion an unethical way to do business in schools and with community partners.” The better path, the recruiter said, would have been for the Minnesota recruiter to “drop off some literature and educate” school officials and partners on the programs, and allowing them to connect students to the recruiter if it’s of interest.
