Newcastle Expect To Become ‘Top World Club’ in 2030
Newcastle United chief executive David Hopkinson has publicly set an aggressive target for the club’s future, stating he sees the team as the best in the world in just five years. “By 2030, I see this club being in the debate about being the top club in the world,” Hopkinson said in a recent interview outlining his medium-term vision for the project. Hopkinson acknowledged that such a timeline needs clear checkpoints rather than vague ambition. “I love the reference to 2030 because if it’s not time-bound, then it’s fantasy,” Hopkinson said. “We can’t set a plan here and just think, ‘We’ll wake up in 2030 and see where we got to’. We have got a highly specific direction of travel and key milestones to be hit.” Commercial growth and internal restructuring are central to that push. Hopkinson argued that much of Newcastle’s progress will come from what he called “self-help,” pointing to untapped global sponsorships and a need to build a world-class off-field operation. “We’re not going to win by accident,” Hopkinson said. “We’re going to win because we’ve been thoughtful and strategic about the organisation we’ve constructed, whose sole purpose is to win.” Hopkinson confirmed the club is recruiting for senior roles such as a chief strategy officer, chief marketing officer and a dedicated revenue chief, and described Newcastle’s digital and data operation as an area that “is not world-class today” but must be upgraded to hit their targets. Hopkinson also stressed that Newcastle’s Saudi majority owners remain heavily engaged in the project and central to the 2030 plan. “I truly believe in my heart of hearts that we are their favourite investment,” Hopkinson said of the Public Investment Fund. “We take up so much of their shared mind and heart, way more than would be warranted given the size of their investment. I feel like we’re a special investment to them. I feel that, not because they tell me that, but because they show me that. It’s every single day.” Looking ahead to domestic ambitions, Hopkinson was equally direct when asked if Newcastle can eventually win the Premier League. “Yeah, of course. Why not?” Hopkinson said. “Our job is to set ourselves up to be perennial contenders. This is a tough league and the correlation between points earned and revenue is undeniable. So much of this is self-help and doing everything we can to try to increase our ability to compete by driving revenues.”
