ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez reports “high interest” in a three-belt flyweight unification between Ricardo Sandoval and Anthony Olascuaga, which could land in Japan this coming March. Sandoval (27-2, 18 KO) was on the verge of a title shot when he dropped a majority decision to David Jimenez in 2022, but bounced back with six straight victories, including a stoppage of faded former titlist Angel Acosta. This earned him a crack at unified WBA/WBC titlist Kenshiro Teraji, and despite fighting in hostile territory as a notable underdog, Sandoval battled his way to a razor-thin split decision to claim champion status at 26. Olascuaga (11-1, 8 KO) has been on the warpath since falling to Teraji in a last-minute showdown three years back, racking up five knockouts in six wins. He’s been among the more active titlists in boxing since blowing out Riku Kano for the vacant WBO belt, going 3-0 in 2025 with a noteworthy unanimous decision over former unified light flyweight champion Hiroto Kyoguchi. This would be a terrific scrap if it got over the finish line, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
