Simeone pleased with Atlético reaction to Inter Milan test

Atlético de Madrid 2-1 Inter Milan: Takeaways

Atlético Madrid 2-1 Inter Milan: Player Ratings
José María Giménez’s stoppage time header has powered Atlético Madrid past Inter Milan. The Cardiac Colchoneros struck again on Wednesday night. A team that looked too exhausted to push on somehow found another gear. Sufrir, sufrir y volver a ganar. Julián Alvarez opened the scoring, and I Nerazzurri punched back early in the second half to level the match. But in the dying minutes, Atlético’s captain rose to meet Antoine Griezmann’s corner and deliver a statement Champions League win at the Metropolitano. Here are Into the Calderón’s player ratings from this magical European night. Juan Musso: Gave you everything and then some from a backup goalkeeper. Strong stop on Federico Dimarco’s early free kick, followed by another big save on Hakan Çalhanoğlu’s long-range effort midway through the first half. Came up huge again early in the second half to deny another Dimarco chance. Little he could do on Piotr Zieliński’s equalizer. 7 Nahuel Molina: An up and down display. Started shakily and looked uncomfortable on the ball before settling into the first half. Contributed more confidently in attack than in defense, where he seemed a bit lost, something highlighted on Inter’s tying goal. Subbed off for Nico Gonzalez in the 58th minute. 5 José María Giménez: Atlético Madrid scored from a corner and fittingly, it came from their Uruguayan warrior, who capped a terrific performance in style. Marked Lautaro Martínez well for most of the night and produced a crucial intervention on the Argentine’s 67th-minute attempt. Looked a step slow and noticeably fatigued toward the end, which may become a concern given Robin Le Normand’s absence and the increased burden on him. 7 Dávid Hancko: Yet another reminder of how valuable this signing has been. Calm, composed, and commanding throughout. 6 Matteo Ruggeri: A positive outing, especially considering his recent dip in form. Inter rarely tested his side in the first half, but he handled what came his way with efficiency. Probably his best performance in red and white. Subbed off for Griezmann in the 68th minute. 6 Conor Gallagher: El Pitbull was central to Atlético’s relentless press from the opening whistle. Primarily a defensive shift from the Englishman, and exactly what the match required. Subbed off for Koke in the 58th minute. 6 Johnny Cardoso: Strong start from the American. Won heaps of “50/50 balls,” including a crucial tackle in the 55th minute to break up a promising Inter attack. Disrupted the visitors’ rhythm throughout his time on the pitch. As he accumulates more minutes, the team will adapt even better to what he brings. Subbed off for Marc Pubill in the 59th minute. Made it difficult for Inter to build anything meaningful in attack. Confident carrying the ball forward, and unlucky not to get a chance on goal just before halftime after a sharp give and go with Alvarez that the Argentine overhit. Showed good defensive discipline tracking back in the closing stages. 6 Álex Baena: Pressed intelligently throughout and positioned himself perfectly for his “assist” on Alvarez’s opener. Subbed off for Alexander Sørloth in the 68th minute. 6 Giuliano Simeone: Relentless in the press from start to finish and delivered a quality cross to Baena that ultimately resulted in La Araña’s opening goal. A constant nuisance for I Nerazzurri all night. Needs to finish the chance he had in the 59th minute. 8 Julián Alvarez: Excellent poacher’s instinct on the opener, reacting quickly to Baena’s deflected pass. Now up to 10 goals in 14 Champions League matches, he clearly thrives under the Metropolitano lights, and that doesn’t seem likely to change anytime soon. 8 Substitutes: Marc Pubill: Came on for…

Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane ready for ‘man-to-man’ battle vs. Arsenal in Champions League
Bayern Munich star Harry Kane does not need an advanced scouting report to know that Arsenal is going to be a handful to deal with for the Bavarians. “It will be the toughest game [of the season so far], I think. Obviously, PSG was a really tough game but us and PSG play in a similar way, and it became almost a man-to-man battle in the first half. It was one of the best halves we’ve played all season. ”[Arsenal] will be a little bit different. I think Arsenal are really good at some of the stuff that we’re good at in terms of the habits, second balls, not taking as much risk, good on set-plays, all things that make you a top team. It’ll be a difficult night and probably our hardest game yet, and it’ll be interesting to test ourselves,” said Kane told TNT Sports (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). When asked about his level of play this season, Kane said this is the best that he’s ever been. “I’d say so, in terms of how I’m playing and how I’m affecting games, not just with goals, and also physically, I feel in as good shape as I ever have done. You combine all that with the experience of being here for a few years and working with the coach for a couple of years, you’re just seeing a really complete version of myself right now,” said Kane. “Going into every game, I feel like I’m going to get chances and that confidence is there, and I’ve been able to take quite a few this season, which has been nice.” Bayern Munich will need the best of Kane to take down Arsenal on the road….will it happen? Jens Lehmann: Bayern Munich can emulate Arsenal’s Invincibles and go unbeaten this season
Former Arsenal FC goalkeeper Jens Lehmann was asked many question about Bayern Munich in an interview with Tz ahead of the Londoners’ clash with Germans. Among many topics, the former Germany international was asked about whether he sees any parallels between the Arsenal team in the 2003/04 season that went unbeaten in the Premier League (which he was part of) and the current Bayern team. “Bayern are more dominant at this point in the season than we were back then,” Lehmann mused, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “No one in our team even talked about going an entire season unbeaten. For me, one thing was important: I wanted to win the league. The idea of remaining undefeated didn’t even cross my mind. It had never happened before. Leverkusen managed it in the Bundesliga in 2024. So it’s definitely on the minds of Bayern. And I believe Bayern can do it too.” Bayern certainly are more dominant at the moment than Arsenal were. The 2004 champions had collected 27 points after 11 games, an impressive haul but not as impressive as Bayern’s current 31 points after 11 games. But it was never necessarily Arsenal’s ability to dominate matches that made them unbeatable but the ability to eke out a (domestic) result even on their worst days. Bayern have been so dominant this season but also needed an added time winner to edge past third division Wehen Wiesbaden in the DFB Pokal and another added time winner to rescue a draw against Union Berlin in the Bundesliga. Bayern are currently in incredible shape. But even this team has not yet proven they can keep this up over 34 Bundesliga matchdays. An invincible season is still very far away, at the time of writing.
