Diego Lopes has message for fighters criticizing UFC 325 title fight rematch: ‘Stop whining’
Diego Lopes is all smiles no matter what anyone says about his surprising UFC title shot. On Thursday, UFC CEO Dana White announced that Lopes is set to challenge featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski in the main event of UFC 325, which takes place Jan. 31 in Sydney, Australia. Lopes is coming off of a spectacular knockout of Jean Silva at Noche UFC 3, but the timing of the rematch is odd considering Volkanovski just defeated Lopes at UFC 314 this past April. Top featherweight contenders Lerone Murphy and Aljamain Sterling criticized the booking, with Murphy writing, “It’s not about who’s the best anymore. It’s about who’s most popular,” Sterling issuing several tweets questioning the matchmakers’ decision. I agree with Lerone. Even if I didn’t get it, him or Movsar for sure should’ve been the guy. Movsar got passed over by Lopes once, and he gets another opportunity for gold lol. Fair play to Lopes, but you can see why guys start to lose love for the game. Cold world. https://t.co/8roU4mxj11— Aljamain Sterling (@funkmasterMMA) November 28, 2025 It’s up to the fans to start complaining about this nonsense. It’s obvious the fighters can’t do anything but fight who they offer us. The UFC caters to YOU fans. Do you guys want merit or popularity in these marquee fights? Speak on it. All of you. https://t.co/ymjWNw6WKK— Aljamain Sterling (@funkmasterMMA) November 28, 2025 It’s 110% not what it used to be. I ride for the company but this shit is beyond frustrating! I get their POV, but stop saying we give the fans the fights that they want to see and we make the BEST fight the BEST! It’s way more frequent now and extremely hard to ignore.… https://t.co/bcji0Agte4— Aljamain Sterling (@funkmasterMMA) November 28, 2025 On Friday, Lopes issued a response on social media to everyone complaining about him getting his rematch, with some harsh words aimed specifically at his fellow featherweights. Diego Lopes reacts to the backlash for his upcoming rematch against Alex Volkanovski at #UFC325 pic.twitter.com/JNnzUPzlna— MMA Fighting (@MMAFighting) November 28, 2025 “My face when I saw everyone crying,” Lopes wrote. “Sitting around, he won’t give you a title fight. Get to work and stop whining on social media.” Lopes’ retort makes sense when it comes to the undefeated Movsar Evloev, who holds a win over Sterling but didn’t log an in-cage appearance in 2025, but doesn’t apply to Murphy or Sterling, who both competed in August (only one month before Lopes’ most recent fight). Murphy, undefeated in 18 pro bouts including 10 UFC appearances, scored a highlight-reel knockout of former Bellator star Aaron Pico, and Sterling won a lopsided decision over two-time UFC title challenger Brian Ortega. Evloev has already stepped forward and suggested he and Murphy fight for the next title shot, while Murphy is simply ready to move on. Leon Murphy I will give you the opportunity to fight the number one contender. Tell your people your ready to fight me on the same card as the championship— Movsar Evloev (@MovsarUFC) November 27, 2025 It is what it is. Business is never personal. We dust off and move forward.— LERONE MURPHY (@LeroneMurphy) November 28, 2025 See more of Sterling’s critical comments below. You say this as if I chose to sit and wait lol. Sometimes the fans sit and act like they know everything. I get paid to fight. I want to fight. Win or lose, I show up and I roll the dice, chasing gold. I’m not here for 2nd place, and I’ll fight for it. https://t.co/ZkNw9rDW7v— Aljamain Sterling (@funkmasterMMA) November 28, 2025 It’s sad to see. Especially as athletes that work so damn hard and not knowing if you’ll be enough to get your rightful opportunities. https://t.co/Y798QtfpTi— Aljamain Sterling (@funkmasterMMA) November 28, 2025 All I ask is that the fans let their voices be heard. Again, I don’t blame Lopes for taking it, just like the first title fight, but it’s shitty and has no respect for…

Georges St-Pierre makes pick for potential Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall grudge match
Georges St-Pierre is as perplexed as everyone else when it comes to gauging Tom Aspinall’s chances against Jon Jones. The UFC heavyweight champion spent much of the past two years chasing a unification bout against Jones, with Jones winning a vacant title at UFC 285 and Aspinall winning an interim title at UFC 295, but for a number of reasons the bout never materialized. Jones suffered an injury in 2024 and was locked into a matchup with Stipe Miocic that was subsequently delayed, and the longtime light heavyweight king also said on multiple occasions he had no interest in granting Aspinall an undisputed title shot. Aspinall moved on from the feud when Jones retired this past June only to quickly turn around and express his interest in fighting at a UFC White House event planned for June 2026. While Jones has targeted Alex Pereira, his comeback talk has kept the hopes of a confrontation with Aspinall alive. Should it ever happen, St-Pierre sounds like he’s leaning towards his onetime training partner. “It’s a hard fight to call,” St-Pierre said on a Kick broadcast with streamer Adin Ross. “In terms of accomplishments, Jon Jones has accomplished more than anyone. He’s the best. However, if you talk about today, who’s the best today, because Tom Aspinall he’s younger, he’s on momentum, but now his momentum just got broke a little bit. It was an eye gouge, but until that happened, it was a very close fight. I think we will see soon what will happen, they’re probably going to rematch because it was a very good fight. There were coming forward, hitting each other, it was a very good fight. “But if [Jones and Aspinall] fight, I don’t know. I don’t know. Jones is an anomaly. You cannot bet against Jon Jones. Even though on paper, you might say he’s older, he’s not in his prime anymore, but man, he’s Jon Jones, you know what I mean?” Though Jones, 38, has fought sporadically since 2020, his historical reign atop the light heavyweight division guarantees he’s part of any discussion of MMA’s pound-for-pound list. At the moment, Islam Makhachev appears to lead that list, though UFC champions Ilia Topuria, Merab Dvalishvili, Alexandre Pantoja, and Alex Pereira are also have an argument. St-Pierre, a two-division UFC champion, has secured his own place on the all-time list, and he feels Jones always has to be mentioned as long as he’s active. “I think Islam Makhachev is there, for sure,” St-Pierre said. “Topuria is there as well. Merab. Arman Tsarukyan is there, too. Of course, Jon Jones is there, I believe Jon Jones. I think I would put him there because of what he’s done. You never know. He left for a long time, he came back and he beat Stipe. There’s rumor about him fighting at the White House against Pereira, that would be interesting. Pereira is one of the top right now. Actually, on paper, you have to give it to him, that would be a great fight.”
