Comment on Google’s Leading AR Glasses Partner XREAL Raises $100M by William Washington
The author said he's looking for all day usage out of the Project Aura. These guys said that's not their specialty. They look at these types of glasses to be used like sunglasses, to be used when needed. I've owned almost every pair of XReal glasses dating back to when they were NReal, I have the XReal One Pros now. None are for all day use and if you are in the crowd of people who don't wear glasses, using them all day really gets on your nerves, so that's not what you are looking for in Smart glasses. However you do want the sleek profile. i did get to talk to these guys at CES and they basically said birdbath lenses are way cheaper than waveguide and it allows them to hit the price point they need to sale so many glasses. Said their goal is to continue R&D to shave down the size of the lens. They said we first saw that in the XReal One Pros and that they'll continue to try and shave them down. they definitely need to make the lenses smaller if they are still going to be relevant once there are plenty of Binocular style AR glasses on the market. The modularity of it, I'm unsure if they need to change anytime soon. Have an external puck for battery and computing makes for a more powerful product than those with those components built in. At least for the foreseeable future while they get battery technology worked out. This is why I think Monocular smart glasses will be big for a while.

That's not how that works at all. Companies like Hypervision have prototypes at different stages of development. The Much larger fov hybrid lenses you are talking about have a couple more years to bake. So NO, you can't just choose a lense design that isn't ready, snap your fingers and make it be ready for your product that is launching now.

Well the 126° lenses being used here didn't exist in the market yet either, they were developed especially for the R2 with help from Hypervision. They could have developed any of the lens designs Hypervision has for market and they have working prototypes up to 240°. The 150-180 FOV range is the perfect middle ground really especially for coverage of the focal plane.

They don't exist in the market yet; they're just prototypes. You also need computing power strong enough to run a fov like that, and that mobile chip would die trying to render 150, 180, or 240 fov if it existed in a usable form. Going up in fov generally is much more demanding than just raising render resolution. Fov of 126 is very good in the VR world and plenty for immersion and a good experience.
