After losing Alex Bregman, could Red Sox pivot to Cubs second baseman?

Losing out on Alex Bregman was a huge blow to the Red Sox, who thought they’d made a competitive offer only to learn they’d been outbid by the Chicago Cubs. Now the Red Sox must regroup, and while signing top free agent infielder Bo Bichette is the obvious pivot, Saturday’s outcome may also open a new path the club could take. Energy developers head to court as Trump says the US ‘will not approve any windmills’

By JENNIFER McDERMOTT Three energy developers are in court this week challenging the Trump administration’s freeze of their offshore wind projects, while President Donald Trump says his goal is to not let any “windmills” be built. Danish energy company Orsted, Norwegian company Equinor, and Dominion Energy Virginia each sued to ask the courts to vacate and set aside the administration’s Dec. 22 order to freeze five big projects on the East Coast over national security concerns. Orsted’s hearing is first, scheduled for Monday on its Revolution Wind project. Orsted is building Revolution Wind with partner Skyborn Renewables to provide power to Rhode Island and Connecticut. The administration did not reveal specifics about its national security concerns, but Trump said Friday while meeting with oil industry executives about investing in Venezuela that wind farms are “losers.” He said they lose money, destroy the landscape and kill birds. “I’ve told my people we will not approve windmills,” Trump said. “Maybe we get forced to do something because some stupid person in the Biden administration agreed to do something years ago. We will not approve any windmills in this country.” FILE – The logo for the Danish company Orsted is displayed on the exterior of the Avedore Power Station in Hvidovre, Copenhagen, Aug. 19, 2025. (Sebastian Elias Uth/Ritzau Scanpix via AP) Expand The Biden administration sought to ramp up offshore wind as a climate change solution. Trump began reversing the country’s energy policies his first day in office with a spate of executive orders aimed at boosting oil, gas and coal. The Trump administration paused leases for the Vineyard Wind project under construction in Massachusetts, Revolution Wind, Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind, and two projects in New York: Sunrise Wind and Empire Wind. New York’s attorney general sued the Trump administration on Friday over Empire Wind and Sunrise Wind. Revolution Wind and Sunrise Wind are both major offshore wind projects by Orsted. Rhode Island and Connecticut filed their own request in court to try to save Revolution Wind. Equinor owns Empire Wind. Its limited liability company, Empire Wind LLC, said the project faces “likely termination” if construction can’t resume by this Friday because the order disrupts a tightly choreographed construction schedule dependent on vessels with very limited availability. Its hearing is Wednesday. Molly Morris, Equinor’s senior vice president overseeing Empire Wind, said they want to build this project, the construction is advanced and it will deliver a major new and essential source of power for New York. Morris said federal officials have not given them any explanation of the national security concerns or how to mitigate them. USA Luge gets 11 athletes into Milan Cortina Olympics, 1 shy of maximum. Russia will get 2 spots

By TIM REYNOLDS A pair of Russian luge athletes were confirmed Monday as qualifiers for next month’s Milan Cortina Olympics, meaning they will compete against Ukrainian sliders on the sport’s biggest stage. Related Articles Andrea Bocelli will headline the Milan Cortina Winter Olympic opening ceremony World champ Malinin leads one of the strongest US Figure Skating teams ever into Winter Olympics Lindsey Vonn rising once again No flag, anthem or parade: An isolated Winter Olympics beckons for Russian athletes What to know about biathlon at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics The International Luge Federation — which announced the 78 singles and doubles sleds that have qualified for the games — included Russian men’s singles slider Roman Repilov and women’s singles slider Daria Olesik on its preliminary list. They will compete, just as they did in World Cup races that they were allowed to enter this season, as neutral athletes at the Olympics as part of the sanctions against Russian federations in response to that country’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine and the war that has continued since. Germany and Austria qualified the maximum of 12 athlete spots and nine sleds for the Olympics. Host Italy and the U.S. each had 11 athletes and eight sleds qualify, while Ukraine and Latvia each had 10 sliders and seven sleds make the Olympic fields. Teams could get as many as three men’s singles, three women’s singles, two men’s doubles and one women’s doubles sled into the games. There were nine nations — the U.S., Germany, Austria, Italy, Latvia, China, Poland, Romania and Ukraine — with at least one sled in every discipline, meaning those will be the nations that compete in the Olympic team relay as well. Ukrainian sliders — and some from other nations — have complained that the Russians should not have been given the chance by the International Olympic Committee and the sport federations to try to qualify for Milan Cortina, neutral flag status or otherwise. Certain sports federations let Russians try to qualify for the games, but only after an independent review process to ensure that they were neutral — meaning they did not publicly support the war and are not affiliated with Russia’s military or other forces. The Ukrainian Luge Federation said the clearance process, at least with regard to their sport, was flawed. “The FIL and the IOC said they are neutral, but I don’t think so,” Ukrainian men’s luge athlete Anton Dukach said earlier this season. “We have proof and we already sent evidence that they are not neutral.” USA Luge USA Luge’s Olympic roster was essentially in place before Monday; all that was left was for FIL’s announcement of the quota spots for each nation. And the math that went into those calculations was clear this past weekend with the results of the fifth and final Olympic qualifying event. FILE – Summer Britcher of the United States waves after the women’s sprint race at the Luge World Cup in Igls near Innsbruck, Austria, Dec. 7, 2024. (AP Photo/Matthias Schrader, File) The trio of women’s singles sliders will be the same as it was for the 2022 Beijing Games: Summer Britcher was nominated to her fourth Olympic team, Emily Fischnaller made her third and Ashley Farquharson made her second. Jonny Gustafson is now a two-time men’s singles Olympian, and he’ll be joined in that field by Olympic rookie Matthew Greiner — a past junior world championships medalist. Marcus Mueller and Ansel Haugsjaa will make their first Olympic trip in men’s doubles, as will now two-time Olympians Zach Di Gregorio and Sean Hollander. And in women’s doubles, making its Olympic medal debut and a race where no nation got more than one sled into the field, Chevonne Forgan and Sophia Kirkby will race for the U.S. It was extremely difficult for women’s doubles sleds to make the field: The FIL rules essentially carved a path for the top sled from each nation to qualify for the Olympics, and that meant four of the top nine women’s sleds in the qualifying…

Mattel adds an autistic Barbie to doll line devoted to showcasing diversity and inclusion

By ANNE D’INNOCENZIO, AP Retail Writer NEW YORK (AP) — Mattel Inc. is introducing an autistic Barbie on Monday as the newest member of its line intended to celebrate diversity, joining a collection that already includes Barbies with Down syndrome, a blind Barbie, a Barbie and a Ken with vitiligo, and other models the toymaker added to make its fashion dolls more inclusive. Related Articles Colombia music star Yeison Jiménez and 5 others dead in small-plane crash Review: Want to solve a mystery this winter? 4 new series will test your sleuthing skills How ABC’s ‘The Rookie’ became a surprise hit with teens ‘Sinners’ leads movie nominations for NAACP Image Awards Inside the Golden Globes: The reunions and moments the telecast didn’t show Mattel said it developed the autistic doll over more than 18 months in partnership with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, a nonprofit organization that advocates for the rights and better media representation of people with autism. The goal: to create a Barbie that reflected some of the ways autistic people may experience and process the world around them, according to a Mattel news release. That was a challenge because autism encompasses a broad range of behaviors and difficulties that vary widely in degree, and many of the traits associated with the disorder are not immediately visible, according to Noor Pervez, who is the Autistic Self Advocacy Network’s community engagement manager and worked closely with Mattel on the Barbie prototype. Like many disabilities, “autism doesn’t look any one way,” Pervez said. “But we can try and show some of the ways that autism expresses itself.” For example, the eyes of the new Barbie shift slightly to the side to represent how some people with autism sometimes avoid direct eye contact, he said. The doll also was given articulated elbows and wrists to acknowledge stimming, hand flapping and other gestures that some autistic people use to process sensory information or to express excitement, according to Mattel. The development team debated whether to dress the doll in a tight or a loose-fitting outfit, Pervez said. Some autistic people wear loose clothes because they are sensitive to the feel of fabric seams, while others wear figure-hugging garments to give them a sense of where their bodies are, he said. The team ended up choosing an A-line dress with short sleeves and a flowy skirt that provides less fabric-to-skin contact. The doll also wears flat shoes to promote stability and ease of movement, according to Mattel. Each doll comes with a pink finger clip fidget spinner, noise-canceling headphones and a pink tablet modeled after the devices some autistic people who struggle to speak use to communicate. The addition of the autistic doll to the Barbie Fashionistas line also became an occasion for Mattel to create a doll with facial features inspired by the company’s employees in India and mood boards reflecting a range of women with Indian backgrounds. Pervez said it was important to have the doll represent a segment of the autistic community that is generally underrepresented. Mattel introduced its first doll with Down syndrome in 2023 and brought out a Barbie representing a person with Type 1 diabetes last summer. The Fashionistas also include a Barbie and a Ken with a prosthetic leg, and a Barbie with hearing aids, but the line also encompasses tall, petite and curvy body types and numerous hair types and skin colors. “Barbie has always strived to reflect the world kids see and the possibilities they imagine, and we’re proud to introduce our first autistic Barbie as part of that ongoing work,” Jamie Cygielman, Mattel’s global head of dolls, said in a statement. The doll was expected to be available at Mattel’s online shop and at Target stores starting Monday for a suggested retail price of $11.87. Walmart stores are expected to start carrying the new Barbie in March, Mattel said. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported last year that…
