USC again plays the numbers game with jersey swaps

Three USC players changed jersey numbers for the Iowa game, according to the game-day roster distributed to media members. Quarterback Sam Huard and punter Sam Johnson were both listed as No. 0 and receiver Zacharyus Williams, who usually wears No. 0, was listed as No. 80. @haleymsawyer USC quarterback Sam Huard and punter Sam Johnson are both wearing No. 0 for today’s game against Iowa. They were each wearing No. 80 last week to pull off a trick play involving a fake punt against Northwestern last week. #CollegeFootball #usc #uscfootball ♬ Made You Look (Remix Instrumental) – Nas Williams was also listed as “out” on the Big Ten Conference pregame availability report. Huard and Johnson had both worn No. 80 in last week’s game against Northwestern, and the jersey change had helped them pull off a controversial trick play involving a fake punt. The Big Ten later issued a statement saying a penalty should have been called, stating that two players playing the same position may not wear the same number during the game, but Trojans head coach Lincoln Riley defended it as “entirely legal.” The play had captured the attention of the college football world, particularly Barstool and Fox Sports personality Dave Portnoy, who called the Trojans “dirtbags” for calling it. Fox Sports analyst and former USC quarterback Matt Leinart called it Portnoy’s “worst rant of the year” and, on Saturday, presented him on the “Big Noon Kickoff” show with a USC No. 80 jersey signed by Sam Huard. “I want to apologize for absolutely nothing, Dave,” Leinart said before presenting the jersey. Game captains Long snapper Hank Pepper, linebacker Eric Gentry, quarterback Jayden Maiava, defensive tackle Devan Thompkins, offensive lineman Tobias Raymond and wide receiver Asante Das were all selected as game captains Saturday. It’s Das’ second straight week as a game captain. Head coach Lincoln Riley told reporters on a Friday Zoom call that Das is a valuable scout team member. “He’s one of those guys that maybe people haven’t seen a ton on Saturdays that has a huge impact on this program,” Riley said. “He’s a phenomenal scout team player. He is becoming a real leader on this team vocally, emotionally, challenging guys, pushing our standard, our core values. This guy is off the charts. There is no way we would ever play a game that we wouldn’t take him to.” Game captains are decided by Riley and a handful of other staff members Friday afternoon, and players are notified during the Friday night team meeting. “I don’t ever want to be the coach that’s like, ‘Well, our captains are only going to be the guys that are playing the most snaps on Saturdays,’” Riley said. “These are organizations. These are like big families. It doesn’t always work like that.” O’Connor starts at center Offensive lineman Kilian O’Connor started at center in Saturday’s game for the first time since the Trojans’ Week 5 game at Illinois. He left that game with an apparent lower-body injury. J’Onre Reed, who has started at center since O’Connor’s injury, was listed as “questionable” on the Big Ten pregame availability report. The unpopular and politically weak 90-year-old Palestinian leader struggles for a role in Gaza

By LEE KEATH CAIRO — Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas turns 90 on Saturday, still holding authoritarian power in tiny pockets of the West Bank, but marginalized and weakened by Israel, deeply unpopular among Palestinians, and struggling for a say in a postwar Gaza Strip. The world’s second-oldest serving president — after Cameroon’s 92-year-old Paul Biya — Abbas has been in office for 20 years, and for nearly the…

INGLEWOOD — The scene Friday night at Intuit Dome might as well have been a salute to a better time in college basketball and its drift toward coast-to-coast conferences. Consider: Regional rivals and their fan bases coming together to try to outplay and outshout each other. Regardless of the result, you walk away feeling better about the sport. This time it was UCLA and Arizona, with their shared history in the…

LOS ANGELES — It’s been a few years since Davante Adams was in this situation: two playoff contenders in mid-November, ready to square off and see what they’re really made of. “That’s what you play for, for the meaningful games that happen after Halloween or around Thanksgiving time,” Adams said. “These are the games that add up and mean the most for playoff implications. All we can do is focus on where we’re at…

Real Housewives of Orange County: Vicki Gunvalson rejoins for the 20th season

When Vicki Gunvalson, an original cast member on “The Real Housewives of Orange County,” walked on stage with Andy Cohen at the Bravo Awards in Las Vegas on Friday, you knew she was leaving with some kind of trinket or trophy. Two years ago, Vicki, who left the show after its 14th season, took home the Wifetime Achievement Award, so that was out. Then Andy handed Vicki an orange and proposed: “Vicki, would you join us as a Housewife for Season 20?” The BravoCon crowd whooped it as an emotional Vicki cried, “Yes!” and just like that, the planets realigned a bit in the “Real Housewives” universe. The just-finished 19th season of “The Real Housewives of Orange County” was definitely not its best. You sensed a shake-up was coming, with Katie Ginella, shunned by the other wives halfway through her second season, but a fan favorite. [Katie and Vicki did post a TikTok from BravoCon together on Friday. Hmmm.] Bringing back Vicki, the self-proclaimed “OG of the OC,” should help. After the end of her 13th season on the show, Vicki was only invited back as “a friend of the Housewives,” a sort of purgatory for housewives whom the series isn’t sure it wants to see as much of going forward. In the most recent season, former housewife Gretchen Rossi filled the “friend of” role, though after Katie’s banishment, Gretchen became a regular presence in her place. After the 14th season, Vicki left entirely, though she did occasionally pop up as a guest for an episode here and there during the 16th and 17th seasons. Now she stands to reconnect the series with its roots. Current veterans such as Tamra Judge, Heather Dubrow and Shannon Storms Beador don’t have the seniority of Vicki. [Like Vicki, Tamra and Heather both left the cast for a few years before rejoining it.] More recent additions, such as Emily Simpson, Gina Kirschenheiter, Jenn Pedranti and Katie Ginella barely know her. Add Vicki to those names and you’ve got eight housewives for a show that usually has just seven. Someone is on the hot seat, whether they know it yet or not. “BravoCon Live with Andy Cohen Presents: The Bravos” airs on Bravo at 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16. Marcus Freeman blew off Pat Narduzzi after Notre Dame’s win

Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman was not in the mood for pleasantries with Pitt rival Pat Narduzzi at the end of Saturday’s game. The Fighting Irish beat the Panthers 37-15 in Saturday’s rivalry game at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh, Pa., in a game that was never particularly close. After the game, Freeman met Narduzzi on the field for the traditional postgame handshake. Narduzzi seemingly wanted to stop and…
