Fernando Mendoza was always the ‘underdog.' His mom never let him think that way

Fernando Mendoza is ready to take his game to the next level — thanks, in large part, to the support of his mother. The Indiana Hoosiers quarterback, who was lightly recruited out of high school and started his collegiate career at the University of California, has officially declared for the NFL draft after a fairy tale season in which he won the Heisman Trophy and led his team to the national championship with a victory over the University of Miami. His mother, Elsa, who lives with multiple sclerosis, has perhaps been his biggest cheerleader. Mendoza, who called his mother “my light, my why … my biggest supporter” during his Heisman Trophy speech in December, continued to credit her while appearing on TODAY Jan. 23 when Craig Melvin pointed out how he has been an underdog throughout his football career. “She’s the light of my family, the optimistic person that always makes sure that I have a smile on my face,” he said. However, my mom has never let me think that way. She’s always put myself as a top dog mentality, so I’ve always been very optimistic about my approach. And now, lucky enough, going from the underdog to a top dog, my mom has instilled that mentality in myself.” Elsa Mendoza is certainly a proud mother. “Your accomplishments will never impact how proud of you I am. Because you are already everything I could have hoped for as a mother,” she wrote in a letter that appeared in The Players’ Tribune before the Heisman Trophy presentation. “ … And that has nothing to do with the miles you throw or the touchdowns you score. It has everything to do with the man you’ve grown into,” she continued. Fernando Mendoza, who is the first Cuban American to win the Heisman Trophy, has nothing but love for his entire family, which remains close. One of his brothers, Alberto, was his backup at Indiana this past season before announcing plans to transfer to Georgia Tech after winning the national championship. Another brother, 14-year-old Max, was on hand at TODAY for Fernando’s interview and revealed he would love to work in television. It’s a family that rides together. “It’s the support and never-ending optimism that they have for me, my brothers, for the entire family. And it’s also the Cuban culture, and a tight knit-ness of everybody,” Fernando Mendoza said. “If you went to the Miami game or you go to any Indiana Bloomington game, or any game that my brothers or I have played in, it’s a squad that pulls up. … It’s like the Mendoza mafia rolls deep,” he added. Mendoza is widely expected to be the No. 1 pick in April’s NFL draft, where Carson Daly’s beloved Las Vegas Raiders hold the first overall selection. “I’d be blessed to play anywhere,” Mendoza said before Carson crashed the interview. “On behalf of Las Vegas, I just want to say, should you end up with us, I’m sorry,” he joked, alluding to the team’s struggles in recent years. “If you can win more than three games, you’re a hero.” This story first appeared on TODAY.com. Businesses in Minneapolis are planning to close Friday to protest ICE

Even with a below-freezing forecast through the end of the week, several residents and business owners said they are planning to turn out Friday for an “ICE Out” day of protest in the city. Organizers are calling for no work, no school and no shopping, and some businesses said they would close their doors as part of the civil action. “This is a bigger thing than the weather,” said Larry Weiss, a retired resident who patrols on his block alongside his wife and noted it was supposed to be about “eight below” in the city on Friday. “They are trying to break us and we are not going to be broken,” he said. Posters calling for statewide action and promoting the protest march and rally are pasted in the windows of businesses near the University of Minnesota. In the LynLake area, a few businesses had posted signs warning that neither Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs nor Border Patrol were welcome inside their stores without a valid judicial warrant. “Everyone is welcome here, except I.C.E.,” reads a sign on the door to Wrecktangle Pizza. Three weeks since 37-year-old U.S. citizen Renee Nicole Good was fatally shot by an ICE officer, the defiance of the city’s residents remains on full display. Jeff Rogers, one of the Wrecktangle owners, said the pizza restaurant would be closed Friday and he’d attend the protest. The restaurant industry in the city is being suffocated by ICE’s presence, he said. “It’s tearing our restaurant community apart … everyone’s seen all the evidence of all this bulls—. It’s horrific and not something we condone,” he said. Signs posted at businesses in Minneapolis on Wednesday. Suzanne Gamboa / NBC News Beckett’s, a nearby sports bar, also planned to close, said Frank, one of the managers who declined to give his last name as he expressed concern over his co-workers. “We have one of our head cooks who hasn’t come in for a month now because he’s afraid. We’re all just supporting him. We also have other cooks that also are worried about it, but they need to pay their bills,” he said of his immigrant co-workers. Craig, a local businessman who did not want his last name used and did not want his business identified over fears of backlash, said he has canceled all his Friday appointments to support the protest. He said most of his clients were supportive. One of his co-workers is of Hmong descent, Craig said, and has had a lot of ICE activity in his neighborhood. “I don’t know how fearful he is, but I am fearful for him,” said Craig, who added he’s been locking his business’ door to offer a safe place for University of Minnesota international students. “They’ve maybe felt all week unsafe and they can come in here and maybe feel safe that maybe I’m a trusted person,” he said. On Tuesday, Greg Bovino, Border Patrol’s commander-at-large, and Marcos Charles, ICE’s executive director of enforcement and removal operations, touted the arrests of more than 3,000 people in the Minneapolis region since last month, including “some of the most dangerous offenders,” they said at a news conference. Bovino said the actions he’s witnessed from immigration enforcement agents have been “professional” and “lawful,” after he was asked about concerns from local law enforcement that people were being racially profiled. In the neighborhood where Good was shot, the streets were covered by snow on Wednesday. At mid-morning, a burst of whistles and car horns broke the icy quiet as drivers and pedestrians blowing whistles started following a group of vehicles they identified as belonging to federal agents. After a few blocks, the cacophony subsided. Despite days of bone-chilling winter weather, residents could be seen throughout the week on street corners and navigating the snow piles on sidewalks as they monitored any actions by ICE or Border Patrol agents. Networks of volunteers have grown by the thousands, according to a person who acts as a “dispatcher” to groups, including those who respond quickly to…

Heisman winner and likely No. 1 pick Fernando Mendoza declares for NFL draft

The Las Vegas Raiders are on the clock, and Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza is officially available. Mendoza formally declared for the NFL draft Friday and could be headed to the Raiders with the No. 1 pick in April. Mendoza led Indiana to a 16-0 season and its first national championship with a 27-21 victory against Miami on Monday night. “Let’s get to work,” Mendoza wrote in a social media post that included a highlight video. “I’m humbled to announce that I am officially declaring for the 2026 NFL Draft!” College Football 4 hours ago Fernando Mendoza was always the ‘underdog.' He also ran for seven scores. He played some of his best football in the College Football Playoff, with eight TD passes and no picks. He ran for a score against the Hurricanes, turning a fourth-and-4 play into a 12-yard scamper that proved to be a pivotal moment in the game. It extended Indiana’s lead to 24-14 in the fourth quarter. Mendoza’s decision to turn pro was widely considered a mere formality. The Hoosiers seemingly tipped his NFL intentions when they signed TCU quarterback Josh Hoover during the open transfer portal window. Mendoza is considered the clearcut top QB in the draft after Oregon’s Dante Moore announced he would return to school for the 2026 season. And the Raiders desperately need better quarterback play. Las Vegas went 3-14 in 2025 and clinched the No. 1 overall pick with a loss to the New York Giants in Week 17. And the franchise will have a new coach after firing veteran Pete Carroll after one season.

To clear ice and snow, there are rock salt alternatives safer for pets and yards

Winter has its fans, but even those who enjoy playing in the snow probably dislike the chore of clearing up after a big storm that dumps several inches or even feet of snow and ice. It’s easy to dash to the closest hardware store to grab a bag of salt, but experts say there are a lot of environmental and other factors to consider when tackling all that ice and snow. Here’s what to know. What kinds of salt are out there? Rock salt, also known as sodium chloride, is the cheapest and most commonly used product. But it’s not great for the environment and it’s not the most effective option out there. “There’s a chart we reference that’s chemical effectiveness at certain temperatures. And really, when you get to about 15 degrees or colder, you can keep applying more and more rock salt and it’s not going to do any more than it already does,” said Martin Tirado, CEO of the Snow and Ice Management Association, a trade group for industry professionals. In those conditions, other products — calcium chloride, magnesium chloride — release heat that helps the salt work better, Tirado said. The different formulations vary in other ways, too, including how quickly they work, their corrosiveness and how they interact with moisture. Calcium chloride and magnesium chloride can cost at least twice as much as rock salt. But all contain chlorides that can pollute fresh water, damage shrubs, trees and grass and crumble concrete sidewalks, stoops and driveways. Blends and coatings can reduce the corrosive nature and environmental hazards of these salts, experts say. Calcium manganese acetate is one of the tamest de-icing products out there, developed specifically to replace rock salt and be more environmentally friendly. It is biodegradable, a corrosion inhibitor, and typically used as a liquid. But it is much more expensive and can still create issues with dissolved oxygen on bodies of water. What about those environmental effects? Pamela Bennett, a horticulture professor at Ohio State, said rock salt is the worst for plants. It gets them in two ways: through the roots and through the air. Salt percolates through the soil. When plants start to draw in salty water in the spring, that dries roots, leading to dry leaves. Brown tips on leaves indicate the soil might have gotten too salty. Salt can also reach plant foliage — in the winter, that’s evergreens — directly when it’s carried by mist and spray. That’s an issue that’s worse on major roads as a lot of traffic moves quickly. “When you have a lot of road salt on the highways, cars are splashing and wind blows it. That salt turns into what looks like a burn,” Bennett says. What about my pets? Most people walking their dog in snowy places have seen what happens when they walk across a heavy salt treatment — stopping suddenly and lifting a paw as if in pain. “Their paw pads get dry or they get little cuts because those crystals are sharp, and then they’re chewing them because that’s the only way they know to make it feel better,” said Alison Manchester, an assistant clinical sciences professor at Cornell University. If they swallow enough salt, it can lead to vomiting, too. For some people, animal safety is a strong reason to look to a nonsalt option against ice and snow. So what are my nonsalt alternatives? Abrasives such as gravel and sand can help with grip, so pedestrians and tires are less likely to slip. But they also come with their own problems. Sand that runs off into freshwater bodies — lakes, streams and rivers — can kill natural growth, Tirado said. Sand can also accumulate in your soil, eventually becoming a problem for plant growth. It can even make a type of concrete when it mixes in clay-heavy soils, experts say. Unconventional solutions are out there. You can buy a deicer that wraps its chlorides in beet juice or beet extract that coats the granules for a variety of benefits, including melting ice faster, working in colder…

How to prepare for possible outages during the winter storm

As an impactful winter storm moves toward North Texas this weekend, state grid operators say they are taking steps to monitor electricity demand and grid reliability. ERCOT said grid conditions are expected to remain normal during the winter weather. However, power outages are not out of the question since they can be caused by a number of reasons, including ice. An Arctic air mass is expected to arrive in North…
