How much has Bayern Munich earned from the Champions League so far?
After Wedesnday’s 2-0 win over Union Saint-Giloise, Bayern Munich has clinched direct progression to the Round of 16 in the Champions League, and they have good reason to maintain their position in the table. The league phase hasn’t even finished, and Bayern have already secured more than €50m in Champions League revenue this season (via Kicker as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia). They’ve earned €12.6 million for six wins (each worth €2.1 million), €2 million for finishing in the top eight, and €11 million for reaching the round of 16. UEFA will also hand out up to €9.9 million based on a club’s final league phase position. Bayern is guaranteed at least a top four finish and will receive a minimum of €9.075 million; if they maintain their second-place position, they can earn up to €9.625 million. Add in the TV market pool and ticket revenue and Bayern have an excellent chance of breaking the €100m mark again, as they did the year before.

Four Observations from Bayern Munich’s 2-0 Champions League win over Union Saint-Gilloise
Few were expecting Bayern Munich to not steamroll Union Saint-Gilloise. As it happened, though, the Belgian outfit did a Leipzig (relentless pressure) and a Gladbach (sitting back and counter attacking) and made the Bavarians work for the win. A brace from Harry Kane, one from the spot, proved enough for the Rekordmeister to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League. This ensured that they will bypass the dreaded play-offs. Despite the relative lack of action in that match, it still spawned some talking points. The whole fullback issue When the lineups came out, most fans thought that it was Aleksandar Pavlović and Tom Bischof in midfield with Raphaël Guerreiro and Joshua Kimmich as the left and right sided fullbacks. Instead, it was Guerreiro on the right, Bischof on the left, and Pavlović and Kimmich in midfield. This was baffling to see. There aren’t many fit senior players who can play right-back save for Guerreiro but even then he’s not that good a defender. Kimmich continuously insisting on playing in midfield says a lot. Bischof is not a proper fullback and Guerreiro is a more natural fit on the left; the concessions that the coach and team must make just to let Kimmich play in his preferred position is just unbelievable. If, and that’s a big IF, Kimmich explicitly ruled himself playing at right-back, then shame on him. A few years ago, he said that he doesn’t mind playing anywhere but lately he has been hard-headed about playing in midfield. Never mind him positively influencing the match, this implies that he values his status more than the likes of an up-and-comer like Bischof. The compatibility of Pavlović and Bischof is an entirely different conversation. Vincent Kompany should also think the setup over in this match because the way that Bayern was letting Union SG through that easily means something wasn’t right. Michael Olise, end of Yup, that about sums up one of the observations for today. Olise is simply an insane player. The Frenchman assisted Harry Kane today and threaded a pass to Kane that won Bayern a penalty. This after his monster performance against Leipzig, where he came off the bench and helped himself to a hat-trick of assist and a goal. Indispensable, to say the least. Wingers who can defend Wingers are normally asked to defend when needed, and Olise and Luis Díaz have exemplified that here. Lucho is known for tracking back and getting back up the pitch once his team regains possession, but Olise has now added that quality to his already loaded repertoire. The ref in this match was Horrible with a capital H This is a recurring theme for Bayern now: random referees who are out of their depth. The one they got today was no better than the one against Paris Saint-Germain: just a boatload of questionable calls and once again sent a Bayern player off when they shouldn’t have been sent off. Win or lose and even if he indicates a penalty for Bayern, a referee’s performance must be called out when appropriate. Bonus Observations The team’s setup was weird. The players were all in unfamiliar positions and most of them didn’t know what to do, both before and after Kim Min-jae’s red card. Kane fluffing his penalty and Olise missing that sitter was fine, at least it’s not against better opposition. Not again: Another Bayern Munich luminary injured while skiing in the Alps
The Alps, Europe’s highest and most extensive mountain range, is known for its picturesque scenery and being a prime location for skiing. For Bayern Munich, it’s a stark reminder of all the times that their men would fall victim to it. Add another one to that now because Lothar Matthäus has injured himself while skiing. “It was the last run on the last day of my vacation,” Lothar recounted (Bild via Tz). “The slope was icy and bumpy. I was already looking forward to lunch at the mountain hut – then I suddenly fell on my right side. I didn’t catch a bump properly, and my skis caught an edge. The problem was the ice; if there had been powder snow, nothing would probably have happened.” The 64-year-old former player, fresh off playing in the Legends Cup, was with his partner Theresa during that day and will undergo surgery. Famed Bayern club doctor Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt was the first one to examine him before referring him to a shoulder specialist. This wouldn’t be the first time that an unfortunate incident in the Alps has befallen someone linked with Bayern. Back in December 2022, Manuel Neuer injured his leg while skiing which ruled him out for that season; Yann Sommer was signed as an emergency backup. Three months later, Julian Nagelsmann was out on holiday and went skiing…only to find out that Bayern had sacked him. At this point, anything untoward that happens in that mountain range should be called a complete and total mishalp.

If looks could kill: Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane admits anger with Raphaël Guerreiro
In the 40th minute, a set-piece delivery looked right on track to meet the head of Bayern Munich star Harry Kane, but before that could happen, Raphaël Guerreiro swooped into connect with a header that missed the mark. On the broadcast, Kane looked furious at how things played out and as it turns out, the Englishman was actually irritated with the Portuguese veteran because the play was specifically designed for Kane. “That set-piece in the first half was made for me. We had a unique set piece routine just to get me free. That’s why I was a bit angry that Rapha went for it. But it’s not a problem,” Kane said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). At the time, the score was 0-0 and tensions things might have gotten a little higher as Bayern Munich just could not seem to get much right in the final third. Kane would eventually go on to score a brace and help the Bavarians earn a 2-0 victory, but for a brief moment, the star striker let his emotions show in a way we do not often see. Afterward, of course, all was forgotten and Bayern Munich was happy to walk away with three point.
