Craig Breslow Reveals Red Sox’s New Identity After Whirlwind Offseason
There’s no question that the Boston Red Sox are a dramatically different team now than the one Craig Breslow took over in late 2023. In fact, they’re a very different team than they were just a few months ago. It’s been a busy offseason for Breslow, who’s reshaped the Red Sox into a pitching-rich ballclub. Coming off a successful 2025 campaign where Boston made the postseason but ultimately ran out of starting pitchers, Breslow has spent much of the winter addressing that problem by fortifying his team’s pitching depth. In the process, Breslow has built arguably the best rotation in baseball with Garrett Crochet at the top, followed by Ranger Suarez, Sonny Gray, Brayan Bello and Johan Oviedo. The Red Sox have plenty of depth behind them, too, giving them their deepest and most talented rotation in years. “I don’t think there’s a question anymore that the identity of our team and the strength of our team is going to be our pitching."On a different type of contending Red Sox team in 2026:https://t.co/5hU7TWd19h— Chris Cotillo (@ChrisCotillo) January 22, 2026 “I don’t think there’s a question anymore that the identity of our team and the strength of our team is going to be our pitching and our ability to prevent runs,” Breslow said during Suarez’s introductory press conference on Wednesday. “I think the improvements we made on the pitching side are significant.” Breslow’s roster-building strategy marks a considerable change for Boston, which has historically been built around offense and lineups that took advantage of Fenway Park. Pitching has often been overlooked or considered an afterthought, especially during Chaim Bloom’s tenure, where the Red Sox never had a true ace and consistently ran out of arms down the stretch. Breslow’s strategy is thus a bold departure from his predecessor’s. It’s more similar to Dave Dombrowski’s, which focused heavily on starting pitching and built a tremendous rotation around David Price, Chris Sale, Rick Porcello, Nathan Eovaldi and Eduardo Rodriguez. Boston is hoping its impressive pitching can help compensate for its diminished lineup, which lost Rafael Devers and Alex Bregman in the past calendar year. Breslow did trade for Willson Contreras and is still looking to add another bat, but the offense remains light on power. Regardless of who else (if anyone) Breslow acquires this offseason, the 2026 Red Sox are going to look very different than the 2025 Red Sox. ESPN Names Patriots Drake Maye ‘Real’ MVP Over Rams Matthew Stafford
New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye and Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford are both MVP finalists, but only one can win the award. Stafford seems to have the edge for the official NFL MVP Award. He was named the First-Team All-Pro quarterback by the Associated Press, making it very likely that he will win the award. However, the race is not so cut and dry. ESPN’s Seth Walder ranked 100 players for his “real” MVP Award, taking into account more than just traditional factors. “To evaluate players, I rely on a variety of sources — statistics and quantitative metrics, awards such as the All-Pro team, and feedback from NFL front office personnel and colleagues at ESPN,” wrote Walder on Thursday. “One of my favorite parts about football is that player evaluation is far from a settled science. Every season, including this one, someone I trust in the league will tell me I have a player ranked far too high and another person who I have similar trust in will tell me that same player is ranked far too low. “In this exercise, we are measuring player value relative to average at respective positions. So we will almost certainly have quarterbacks at the very top — it is the highest leverage position — but also cannot have more than 16 on the list.” Maye topped Walder’s rankings, with Stafford in third place. Dak Prescott was No. 2 on the rankings. Walder noted that Stafford’s accuracy numbers did not stack up to Maye and Prescott’s, hence his third-place finish in the rankings. “Maye might not be the NFL MVP when it is announced Feb. 5 … but he should be,” wrote Walder. “And while it was a close race throughout the season, I don’t think it was really that close at the end. Maye finished as the NFL’s QBR leader by a healthy margin, with his 77.2 being well ahead of the next-highest finisher (Jordan Love at 72.9). And because QBR already adjusts for opponent quality, Maye’s big lead takes into account the Patriots’ easy strength of schedule. “How did Maye pull it off? Mainly with accuracy and a big helping of explosive plays. Maye led QBR-qualifying quarterbacks in yards per dropback (7.7), adjusted completion percentage (78.8%) and completion percentage over expectation (plus-9%). That last number represents the best CPOE season by any quarterback in the NFL Next Gen Stats era (since 2016). Maye recorded 54 plays that generated at least two expected points added, tied for the second most in the NFL. And his 8.7 air yards per attempt was third highest, and he threw to the sticks or farther on 47% of his attempts (fourth highest).” Walder went on to note that Maye achieved all he did this season in a tougher situation than Stafford. Stafford is throwing the ball to Puka Nacua and Davante Adams with Kyren Williams in the backfield. The Patriots’ weapons are great, but they do not stack up to the two All-Pro wide receivers and Pro Bowl running back the Rams have. Walder’s rankings will most likely not align with how the MVP race actually shakes out. All indications are that voters will name Stafford the NFL MVP, and Maye will be the runner-up. However, the two could face off in the Super Bowl, and both would much rather win that than the award anyway. More Patriots: Cam Newton Calls Patriots’ Super Bowl Path ‘Joke,’ But His Was Easier

Broncos Defender Makes Absurd Jarrett Stidham Statement Before AFC Championship
The Denver Broncos undeniable were dealt an awful hand ahead of the AFC Championship. Bo Nix, who led his club to an overtime victory against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, had surgery to repair a broken ankle this week and will miss the rest of the postseason. The Broncos will, as a result, be forced to rely on backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham, who hasn’t thrown a meaningful pass in two seasons, to make his fifth career start against the New England Patriots. It’s safe to say that’s not how they wanted things to play out… Denver defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers is confident in his backup quarterback, however: “Stiddy does such a good job — he knows what he’s doing,” Franklin-Myers said on Wednesday, per video provided by Denver Sports 104.3. “… Stiddy, man, he’s running scout-team plays and he’s running the (expletive) better than their starting quarterback. I’ll tell you, man, he’s a good player for us. We’re excited.” Yes, he actually said that. It’s safe to say that might be true, too, as the Broncos faced the likes of Trey Lance, Chris Oladokun, Marcus Mariota, Davis Mills and Jake Browning in 2025, as pointed out by Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald.
