Medical advances, like 3D mammograms, save lives, according to experts
Technological advances in cancer screenings help lower the number of cancer deaths. That’s according to the latest report from the American Cancer Society, which also attributes better treatments to a new milestone in cancer: seven out of 10 people reach the 5-year mark of cancer survival. Part of that technology includes 3D mammograms, which are imaging tests that combine multiple breast X-rays into a 3D picture of the breast. According to The Cooper Clinic in Dallas, 3D mammography has been proven to detect 41 percent more invasive breast cancers, detect cancer 15 months earlier and reduce false-positive recalls by up to 40 percent According to Cooper Clinic radiologist and breast imaging specialist Dr. Vance Dell, a 3D mammogram can help him see tumors as small as 10 millimeters, which is about the size of a Tic-Tac. “10 millimeters is the magic size in medicine for breast cancers. When we find breast cancers this size or smaller, 99% of those ladies will be alive five years later, no matter how aggressive it is. These are the curable ones. You stretch that out and 97% or 98% will be alive 20 years later, if they don’t die of something else. This is medicine. This is a close cure as we can get for cancer,” said Dr. Dell. The American Cancer Society reports that for women, incidence is highest for breast cancer, which is diagnosed more than twice as often as second-ranking lung cancer. The breast cancer death rate decreased 44% between its peak in 1989 and 2023, which averted an estimated 546,000 deaths. 3D mammography emits low-dose radiation comparable to traditional 2D mammography and is well below the average radiation exposure a person faces per year and below FDA guidelines. A growing number of private insurers, as well as Medicare, are now covering 3D mammography. Contact your insurance provider regarding your specific coverage. The American Cancer Society recommends annual mammograms for women beginning at age 40. If you have a family history of breast cancer, consult with your physician to see if you should begin screening earlier.

Roundtable Reactions: Ravens hire Jesse Minter as next head coach

BREAKING: Ravens hire Jesse Minter as next head coach

Ravens host Bills OC Joe Brady for 2nd, in-person HC interview
The Ravens are hosting Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady for an in-person interview for their head coaching vacancy on Thursday, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Brady is the third apparent finalist to replace John Harbaugh. Outgoing Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver and Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter both interviewed in Baltimore this week, too. Brady’s offenses have been among the best in the NFL since he took over as coordinator during the 2023 season. The Bills’ running game – specifically running back James Cook – took major steps forward under Brady without losing any effectiveness through the air. He no doubt benefitted from having Josh Allen under center, but the team has consistently lacked elite receiving talent. This, of course, is a moot point as the Ravens have announced their new head coach.

Ravens host Chargers DC Jesse Minter for 2nd, in-person HC interview
The Ravens interviewed Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter for their head coaching vacancy on Wednesday. Minter, 42, has long been considered the favorite to land the job in Baltimore. After several years coaching in college, he broke into the NFL as a Ravens defensive assistant in 2017. He spent four seasons in Baltimore – three under defensive coordinator Wink Martindale – before taking a defensive coordinator job at Vanderbilt in 2021. Minter then served as Michigan’s defensive coordinator on Jim Harbaugh’s staff in 2022 and 2023 before following Harbaugh to Los Angeles for the Chargers’ DC job. That path is very similar to that of former Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald, who is now the Seahawks’ head coach. He arrived in Baltimore a few years before Minter, but they worked together closely until they both left for college DC jobs in 2020. Macdonald, of course, went to Michigan first and only needed one year to get an opportunity. It took a bit longer for Minter, which is why it has taken him longer to get a head coaching opportunity. Now, he has completed his second year as the coordinator for one of the league’s top defenses. It makes sense, therefore, that Minter is a leading candidate for a job that many thought should have been Macdonald’s. For a myriad of reasons, going from Harbaugh to Macdonald was not realistic, but the Ravens now have the opportunity to hire Minter and, hopefully, find similar success to what Macdonald has in Seattle.
