Fire breaks out at East Harlem beer garden and restaurant: FDNY
A fire broke out at a popular beer garden in East Harlem on Wednesday, destroying part of the business before spreading to a residential building. The flames were reported at Santiago’s Beer Garden around 6 p.m., according to the FDNY. The fire at the restaurant on First Avenue quickly escalated, spreading to the second and third floors of an adjacent residential building, and later climbing to the fourth floor. One person suffered injuries as a result of the fire, thought they refused additional medical attention at the scene. The fire was put out by 175 responding firefighters from 45 units, the FDNY said, though it took hours to get the flames under control. The business was closed at the time the fire started. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. “There was like a garbage can that was on fire and it made the fire spread to the inside, and then it just kept moving in,” said Matthew Fermin, the owner of the Dominican restuarant. The Red Cross arrived at the scene to help residents from the residential building who were displaced due to the fire. At least two families were believed to have been displaced.

So, who came out victorious at the 59th annual ceremony hosted by Lainey Wilson? Country music legend Vince Gill was honored with the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award, which has previously gone to the likes of George Strait, Alan Jackson, Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. But competition was especially fierce in the other categories. After all, Wilson, Luke Combs, Cody Johnson, Chris Stapleton and Morgan Wallen are facing off in Entertainer of the Year. Plus, Kelsea Ballerini, Miranda Lambert, Ella Langley, Megan Moroney and Wilson each earned nods in the Female Vocalist of the Year category. Indeed, Ella, Megan and Luke all are all set to give show-stopping performances during country’s big night as well. Wilson’s hosting gig marked the first time the award ceremony had a solo female host since Reba McEntire led the charge in 1991. “I let Reba know I was doing this and she was so excited,” Wilson said of her historic role during an Oct. 8 appearance on the “Nashville Now” podcast. “It’s been a long time since a woman has done it solo. I’m glad they trust me. I like to run my mouth and I love country music.” As for what her main goal was for the job? The “4x4xU” singer — who cohosted in 2024 alongside Luke and Peyton Manning — promised to add a little humor. “If I can poke fun at people, hey, we good,” she explained. “I tried to get them to let me do it last year and they were like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa… that’s too far.’ But I go way back with these people.” For the complete list of winners at the 2025 CMA Awards, read on. Two Miss Universe judges step down amid allegations of rigging
Two judges have resigned from the Miss Universe international beauty pageant, with one making accusations of rigging and mulling a lawsuit as the annual competition nears its end in Bangkok. Omar Harfouch, a Lebanese-French composer, was the first to step down from the eight-member panel, saying in an Instagram post on Tuesday that there had been a “secret vote” by people not on the official jury to preselect the top 30 contestants out of 136. On Wednesday, Harfouch said he was considering filing a lawsuit against the Miss Universe Organization that runs the competition, citing emotional trauma and reputational damage. “I was misled and publicly used to give credibility to an election process that was already compromised,” he said on Instagram, adding that a member of the unofficial group had a personal romantic relationship with one of the contestants. The Miss Universe Organization denied Harfouch’s accusations, saying Tuesday on Instagram that there was no impromptu jury and that all competition evaluations continued to follow the organization’s “established, transparent, and supervised” protocols. It said the group of people Harfouch was referring to was the official selection committee for a separate social impact initiative. The Miss Universe Organization did not respond to an NBC News request for comment. The pageant, which began Nov. 5 and concludes on Friday, also made headlines earlier this month when several contestants walked out after Nawat Itsaragrisil, a Thai businessman who is co-owner of the Miss Universe Organization, chided Miss Mexico, Fátima Bosch, for not taking part in promotional activities. Nawat later apologized and was admonished by his fellow owner, Raul Rocha Cantú, who said he would not let contestants be “humiliated.” Miss Jamaica, Gabrielle Henry, is also recovering at a hospital after falling off stage Wednesday during the preliminary evening gown round. Founded in 1952 by a California swimwear brand, Miss Universe quickly became a lucrative business, passing through the ownership of mostly male executives, including President Donald Trump, who owned the rights either in part or in full from 1996 until 2022. The competition, which generates most of its revenue from licensing regional broadcasting rights, was sold to Anne Jakkaphong Jakrajutatip, a Thai businesswoman, for $20 million in 2022. Over the years, Miss Universe has suffered from slumping viewership as criticism rose over its objectification of women. While the competition has made modest strides under Jakrajutatip’s ownership, such as allowing married women and mothers to compete, complaints of sexual harassment and rigging have continued across almost every iteration. Why does this NYC subway station smell ‘Christmassy'? It's an ad
A trip through New York City’s crowded subway system usually offers a pungent mix of industrial and bodily aromas. But inside a stretch of the Grand Central station this holiday season, the air smells of vanilla and fresh pine. The scent is part of a novel advertising campaign for Bath & Body Works, which is pumping the fragrance into the 42nd Street shuttle train platform through November. Many commuters don’t pause to take notice of the diffusers that have been attached to a steel girder over the platform, and along the walls of a connecting tunnel. Those who look up can see them releasing visible bursts of vapor. Bath & Body Works estimates that 20 to 30 pounds of fragrance will be dispersed by the end of the month, when the campaign ends. “It smells better than the normal New York City tunnels that we normally smell here,” commuter Jerome Murray said. “So yes, I appreciate it.” The area is one of the busiest parts inside the transit hub, with people moving quickly as they transfer to and from the Times Square shuttle every four to five minutes. Commuter Kelly Rodriguez, 23, described the smell as “a pine scent, very Christmassy” — a note given by many riders. Kathleen Baptiste, 60, added that it reminds her of “fabric softeners.” The scent is subtle enough that some riders said they missed it as they traveled through the space. If you didn’t see the poster explaining that it is a Bath & Body Works ad campaign, it could be easy to mistake for another rider’s perfume. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which runs the city’s subways and buses, says this is the first ad campaign of its kind inside the transit network, which is seeking to generate new revenue streams. Hoping to avoid any blowback, the agency tested a pilot of aroma-based ads last year in stations in Queens and Brooklyn to review the safety and gather feedback, according to Mary John, the agency’s director of commercial ventures. John says the agency has not received any complaints so far. Jamie Sohosky, Bath & Body Works’ chief marketing officer, said the retail chain chose “Fresh Balsam” for the campaign because it is one of the brand’s most iconic holiday scents and a long-running seasonal favorite. Grand Central, she said, was a natural choice, since huge numbers of riders pass through while connecting to other trains.
