Medical advances, like 3D mammograms, save lives, according to experts
Technological advances in cancer screenings help lower the number of cancer deaths. That’s according to the latest report from the American Cancer Society, which also attributes better treatments to a new milestone in cancer: seven out of 10 people reach the 5-year mark of cancer survival. Part of that technology includes 3D mammograms, which are imaging tests that combine multiple breast X-rays into a 3D picture of the breast. According to The Cooper Clinic in Dallas, 3D mammography has been proven to detect 41 percent more invasive breast cancers, detect cancer 15 months earlier and reduce false-positive recalls by up to 40 percent According to Cooper Clinic radiologist and breast imaging specialist Dr. Vance Dell, a 3D mammogram can help him see tumors as small as 10 millimeters, which is about the size of a Tic-Tac. “10 millimeters is the magic size in medicine for breast cancers. When we find breast cancers this size or smaller, 99% of those ladies will be alive five years later, no matter how aggressive it is. These are the curable ones. You stretch that out and 97% or 98% will be alive 20 years later, if they don’t die of something else. This is medicine. This is a close cure as we can get for cancer,” said Dr. Dell. The American Cancer Society reports that for women, incidence is highest for breast cancer, which is diagnosed more than twice as often as second-ranking lung cancer. The breast cancer death rate decreased 44% between its peak in 1989 and 2023, which averted an estimated 546,000 deaths. 3D mammography emits low-dose radiation comparable to traditional 2D mammography and is well below the average radiation exposure a person faces per year and below FDA guidelines. A growing number of private insurers, as well as Medicare, are now covering 3D mammography. Contact your insurance provider regarding your specific coverage. The American Cancer Society recommends annual mammograms for women beginning at age 40. If you have a family history of breast cancer, consult with your physician to see if you should begin screening earlier.
