How Trump 2.0 accelerated China’s push for tech and trade resilience
After a year of Trump 2.0, China has much to be thankful for. This is not an endorsement of US hegemony but an expression of confidence in China’s increased resilience – and an acknowledgement of the US policies that pushed China there. The Chinese government’s stance towards Trump 2.0 remains the same: to adhere to its own principles, respond rationally and look to turn any crisis into an opportunity. For a start, Trump 2.0’s tariff war on China has backfired. All it did was force China to...

China’s private sector increases presence among top 100 listed companies
Private sector enterprises comprised 40 per cent of the top 100 listed Chinese companies by market value in the second half of last year, led by high-profile technology firms involved in China’s artificial intelligence (AI) boom, according to the Peterson Institute for International Economics. That represented an increase of 2.4 percentage points from the first half of last year, the Washington-based think tank said in a report released on Tuesday that also highlighted a marked rebound from a...

Will The Weather Shut Down ACC Basketball This Weekend?
This photo is from Toronto but it could be central North Carolina in a few days as a massive winter storm draws closer to the Triangle (Photo by Creative Touch Imaging Ltd./NurPhoto via Getty Images) If you somehow haven’t heard by now, the weather this weekend is lining up for possibly one of the biggest winter storms in living memory for the Triangle, North Carolina and indeed much of the country but particularly the East Coast. Naturally, that will cause big problems at public events and around here, there aren’t many bigger events than college basketball games, where thousands gather. Duke plays at home Saturday against Wake Forest and hosts Louisville on Monday. Current snow fall estimates for Durham this weekend: as much as 24” or so. Amazingly, the women, who are playing at Syracuse could have a much easier time of it: the forecast there is under 10” and it’s bizarre that Durham, NC, could have more than twice as much snow as Syracuse, New York. UNC plays at Virginia on Saturday and the forecast there is for about the same as we’ll see in the Triangle. NC State meanwhile plays at Pitt where the snowfall is expected to be a bit lighter at merely 22” or so. Needless to say, there’s no guarantee any of these games will be played. The weather in the Triangle, Winston-Salem and Louisville will be historically bad and there’s no guarantee that Wake, Louisville, NC State, UNC or the Duke women’s team will even attempt to travel. On the bright side, in year’s past, snow was seen as a good-luck sign for Duke, but early in the Krzyewski era, Duke played a road game against Louisville, maybe in Charlotte, and it didn’t help much. Let’s hope that history doesn’t repeat.
