‘Joy ride gone bad': New details in Hartford human trafficking investigation
We’re learning more after seven men were arrested in connection with sexual assault and trafficking three teen girls in Connecticut. NBC Connecticut has obtained arrest warrants that detail a disturbing string of events, before the girls were found by family members. The warrants state three 14-year-old girls were supposed to be having a sleepover at one of their homes in Bristol, but what happened next was what one of the victims called a “joy ride gone bad.” It ended with one of their aunts finding them three days later, according to authorities. Warrants show that on Thursday, May 1, three minors left a sleepover at a house in Bristol to hang out with friends. They were then brought to Donovan Dunn’s home in Hartford where police say there were sexually assaulted by him and four other men. The girls then claim the men dropped them off at 25 Hillyer St. One girl said they never came back for them and ended up leaving. They were then taken to the Super 8 hotel on West Service Road by two men, who then sexually assaulted them in one of the rooms. One of the men tried to pay them after the assault, according to the warrants. Another man, identified as Ahmad Compton, later showed up. The three girls told him they were 14 years old, to which he said they look 16 and would treat them as such, the warrants state. Documents reveal Compton raped all of them and told them he was going to get them business. He showed them hand signals and explained what they meant when it came to being with other men. Compton said he would get them flip phones, and take them to certain spots. One of the girls said he even traced a circle with his hands, stating the girls were now in his circle. He then took the girls to an apartment on Nelton Way, which is near Hillyer Street, where they were first taken. He told a man there to watch them and not let them leave, the warrants state. Meanwhile, over the course of three days while the girls were missing, one of the girls’ mothers filed missing persons reports in Bristol. One of the mothers was told by one of the girls’ friends, who spoke to Dunn, that they were taken to Hillyer Street. Their families then began canvassing the area, according to warrants. When Compton brought the girls to the Nelton Way apartment, a witness saw them and called one of the girl’s mothers. Her sisters then showed up and found the girls in a bedroom in the apartment. They were then taken to Connecticut Children’s for evaluation, the warrants read. The incident remains under investigation.

Mansfield deputy fire chief honored for daring rescue during farm fire
Honoring the efforts of a Mansfield firefighter who did everything he could to save lives. The deputy fire chief was recognized by the town Monday night for rushing inside a home near his house when it caught fire last month. He ended up hospitalized, but just returned to work. “We train until we don’t get it wrong and it’s the hours and hours that we beat on our craft that make us who we are,” Kevin Danielson, deputy fire chief for the Mansfield Fire Department, said. He takes training seriously at the fire department and those skills were tested when he responded to a farm fire last month, as he was returning home from another call. “Structure fire. 441 Warrenville Road. Got into my chief’s car and went down,” he said. Danielson said as he pulled up to the home on Warrenville Road, he saw smoke coming from the second floor. That’s when he noticed a man outside and ran up to him asking: “’Is there anybody in there?’ and he goes, ‘yes there’s two. They’re trapped on the second floor,’” he said. As Danielson radioed for backup, he rushed into the burning home and went upstairs. He helped one woman get out safely and then grabbed a flashlight while under the smoke to try to find the other woman. “I made the decision to crawl down that hallway. I grabbed her one arm, I grabbed her other arm and went outside with her and immediately began CPR,” he said. He was performing CPR on 79-year-old Carol Dauphin until she was taken to the hospital where she later died. Danielson was also hospitalized for two weeks with smoke inhalation, but recovered and was able get back to work last week. He was able to get a lot of support from the community and town officials. At town hall, they made sure to recognize his efforts Monday evening. Town leaders gave Danielson recognition before their town council meeting, calling his efforts heroic. “The deputy chief was able to give every occupant of the house every chance at survival,” Ryan Aylesworth, Mansfield town manager, said. Danielson said he’s humbled by the honor and has gotten counseling after that night, but his thoughts are with the Dauphins. “I have empathy for the family for their loss. I hope they can recover from it, and I applied what skills I had, whatever training I had, and I think anybody at that level of training would have done the same thing,” he said.

Several people arrested in connection to cockfighting ring in West Haven
Seven people are facing charges in connection to an illegal cockfighting event that took place in West Haven over the weekend. The police department said they responded to a building in the 200 block of Front Avenue for a report of an illegal cockfighting event around 6:50 p.m. on Saturday. Responding officers found well over 100 people inside the building gathered around what appeared to be a makeshift wooden cockfighting ring. When police arrived, many people seated around the ring, along with bystanders, fled the scene. Officers were able to arrest seven people involved from across the tri-state area. Inside the makeshift ring, officers saw loose feathers, chicken spurs, blood spatter and evidence, police said. West Haven Animal Control officers seized over 30 live roosters and several dead roosters. Those arrested are facing charges including cruelty to animals, illegal use of an animal for fighting and interfering with an officer.
