Lawyer for fired Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore seeks to have the charges dismissed
A lawyer for fired University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore declared his innocence Thursday and said she’s seeking to have home invasion and other charges against him dismissed. Authorities say Moore entered a woman’s apartment on Dec. 10 and blamed her for him losing his job that day, then grabbed butter knives and kitchen scissors and threatened to kill himself. Moore was fired for having a personal relationship with the woman — who was a football staff member — and for lying during the investigation, the university’s athletic director said in the dismissal letter. In court Thursday, defense attorney Ellen Michaels said she had filed a motion to quash the arrest warrant against Moore. She later told reporters Moore is innocent. “This warrant was issued based on false and misleading statements presented as facts,” Michaels said. “We’re confident the truth will come out in court under oath where it belongs.” College Football Dec 12, 2025 Sherrone Moore charged with stalking and home invasion following Michigan dismissal College Football Dec 10, 2025 Michigan fires Sherrone Moore for ‘inappropriate relationship' with staff member Michaels didn’t elaborate on the disputed statements and directed reporters to a court filing that wasn’t immediately available. Without the statements, she said, “there would be no probable cause for these charges.” Moore, 39, faces three charges, including felony home invasion and stalking. He has pleaded not guilty and must wear a tracking device while free on bond. He stood nearby while Michaels spoke outside the courthouse but declined to comment. Washtenaw County assistant prosecutor Kati Rezmierski told the judge that she had just received Michaels’ court filing. Judge Cedric Simpson set the next hearing for Feb. 17. When the charges were filed on Dec. 12, Rezmierski said the woman involved in the case cooperated with the university investigating the affair after she ended it with Moore. The prosecutor quoted Moore as telling the woman, “My blood is on your hands.” Moore arrived at the courthouse with his wife, Kelli and waited in an adjacent courtroom for his case to be called. More than 20 members of the news media were on hand for the hearing. Moore coached the Wolverines for two seasons as the successor to Jim Harbaugh, who won a national championship before quitting to become coach of the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers. Kyle Whittingham, who coached Utah for two decades, is the new Michigan coach.

Elizabeth Hurley describes ‘monstrous' privacy invasion by Daily Mail in British media hacking case
Elizabeth Hurley accused the publisher of the Daily Mail on Thursday of tapping her phones, putting microphones outside her windows and stealing her medical records among “other monstrous, staggering things” during testimony in a celebrity-studded privacy invasion lawsuit. “The best way I can describe it is like there is someone peeping into your life and into your home,” the model and actor said. It “makes me feel as if my private life had been violated by violent intruders — that there had been sinister thieves in my home all along and that I had been living with them completely unaware.” Hurley was the second witness to testify in the lawsuit that includes co-claimants Prince Harry and Elton John, and four others who allege that Associated Newspapers Ltd. hired private investigators to unlawfully snoop on them over two decades. Harry showed up to show his support for Hurley’s testimony the day after he choked up in the witness box as he spoke of the emotional toll his battle against the British media had taken on him and his family. British Royal Family Jan 21 An emotional Prince Harry tells court how the Daily Mail made Meghan's life ‘a misery' Lawsuits Jun 2, 2021 Judge Awards Daily Mail More than $100,000 in Attorneys' Fees in Katie Hill Case The publisher denies the claims and has called them preposterous. It said that the articles were reported on with legitimate sources and many will be named by employees at the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday in the company’s defense during the nine-week trial in London’s High Court. Hurley, who like the prince brought similar phone hacking lawsuits against the publishers of the Daily Mirror and The Sun, said that she was unaware of similar allegations against the Mail until she was told in 2020 that Gavin Burrows, a former private eye, purportedly said that he had stolen her information at the behest of the newspapers. Burrows has since disavowed that sworn statement and said he never worked for the Mail. Hurley claims 15 articles about her between 2002 and 2011 relied on unlawful information-gathering. Several were about the 2002 birth of her son, Damian, and the paternity fight with his father, the late film producer Steve Bing. “The Mail’s unlawful acts against me involve landline tapping my phones and recording my live telephone conversations, placing surreptitious mics on my home windows, stealing my medical information when I was pregnant with Damian, and other monstrous, staggering things,” Hurley said. She said she had hoped her son, now a model and actor himself who sat in the courtroom, would never see those articles. “I felt really mortified that my son would be able to read all this stuff one day, and I feel really bad that that day is today when all this stuff is being regurgitated,” she said as she became upset when shown some of those articles in court. “Yet again, everyone’s privacy is being invaded in this terrible way, and I feel very helpless about that.”

Olympic flame makes historic passage down Venice's Grand Canal
The Olympic flame on Thursday crossed through the romantic, lagoon city of Venice, where torchbearers glided on traditional Venetian boats down the Grand Canal and across St. Mark’s Basin facing the famed Doge’s Palace in one of its most scenic passages ahead of the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics. The flame arrived near dusk in Venice’s Piazzale Roma, the main bus terminal for people arriving in the city. It crossed the Ponte delle Guglie in Cannaregio en route to the arched Rialto Bridge, where it was loaded onto a boat to traverse the Grand Canal toward the wooden Accademia Bridge. Francesco Lamon, an Olympic gold medal-winning cyclist, was one of the torchbearers on Thursday. “It’s an indescribable emotion,” he told The Associated Press. 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics 3 hours ago ‘Heated Rivalry' stars Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams will be Olympic torchbearers 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics 1 hour ago 2026 Milan Cortina Olympic schedule People cheered from the side of the canal as the flame, held aloft by torchbearers, was conveyed on a long traditional Venetian boat that once carried Venice’s rulers. Called the Serenissima, it was flanked by smaller traditional boats as well as police on Jet Skis. One small group of anti-war demonstrators called for Israel and the U.S. to be excluded from the Games. Venice historically has served as a crossroads between Eastern and Western civilizations, which is evident in its Byzantine architecture and history in the trade of spices, silks and art. In the modern era, it is the capital of the Veneto region, which includes host city Cortina nestled in the Dolomites to the north. On a clear day, snow-capped mountains can be seen from Venice’s historic center. From the Accademia Bridge, the flame was carried by foot to Punto della Salute, opposite St. Mark’s Square, for a brief tour of St. Mark’s Basin before being set down at the Doge’s Palace. Thousands of people gathered in St. Mark’s Square to cheer the flame as it passed St. Mark’s Basilica, where a small cauldron was lit. Venice was the 46th stage of the 63-day torch relay covering 12,000 kilometers (nearly 7,500 miles) that started in Rome and will wind its way through all 110 Italian provinces before reaching Milan’s San Siro Stadium for the opening ceremony on Feb. 6. Two official cauldrons will burn during the Games, one in Milan at Arco della Pace in Sempione Park, and one in Cortina, in the Dibona Square. It’s the first time in nearly 20 years — since the 2006 Turin Games — that Italy has hosted the flame. The Winter Games run through Feb. 22, when the closing ceremony will take place in the Veneto city of Verona. 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics May 19, 2025 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina: See dates, sports, how to watch, more 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics Jun 16, 2025 Get to know Team USA Olympians ahead of the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics Jun 9, 2025 How to watch the 2026 Olympics in Milan Cortina

Celtics’ Jaylen Brown jokes that $35K fine paid dividends after win over Pacers
BOSTON — When Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown publicly criticized the referees almost two weeks ago, he knew he’d receive a hefty fine. The NBA delivered one, charging him $35,000 for disparaging the officials after the Celtics shot just four free throws during a five-point loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Jan. 10.
