Jets’ Haydn Fleury released from hospital after scary injury vs. Golden Knights
The Winnipeg Jets are in the midst of an abysmal 10-game losing streak after falling 4-3 to the Vegas Golden Knights on home ice on Tuesday — but they’re dealing with something bigger than hockey after a scary injury to defenseman Haydn Fleury. Fleury slid hard into the end boards in the first period of the contest after a collision with Knights forward Keegan Kolesar, and was taken off the ice on a stretcher. The 29-year-old was transported to a local hospital and discharged late in the evening. “He’s got a broken nose, a bruised back,” head coach Scott Arniel confirmed on Wednesday, per NHL.com. “Obviously, it’s not at first what we thought. It’s not as serious as when we’re seeing him go off on a stretcher. He was banged up pretty good, he felt it. But it’s great to see him here today and see him around the room.” Scary scene in Winnipeg as Haydn Fleury leaves the game on a stretcher after crashing into the boards back first. Kolesar was not penalized for his actions, and Jets captain Adam Lowry challenged him to a fight when the game restarted shortly after. The former first-round pick in the 2014 NHL Draft was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday. “You’ve got to kind of wait and see on it,” Arniel said when asked if Fleury sustained a concussion on the play. “You bang your head that hard … I’m not saying it’s a concussion yet, but he still has to go through the next few days here and see how he feels. He may wake up three days from now and feel great or he may wake up three days from now and have some issues.” In a corresponding move, forward Danil Zhilkin was recalled from the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League. Over 17 games with the Jets in 2025-26, Fleury has not managed a point. His best National Hockey League season came back in 2019-20, when he chipped in 14 points in 45 games as a member of the Carolina Hurricanes — the team that drafted him seventh overall. Fleury and Winnipeg have both struggled mightily this year; the Jets have gone from worst to first after winning the President’s Trophy last season. This time around, they’re 15-21-5 and dead last in NHL standings. With a Western Conference wildcard slot a full 10 points away, it’s possible that Arniel’s team could be the first ever to go from the best record in the league to the worst in a span of one campaign. The Jets will look to win a game for the first time since December 13 when the Edmonton Oilers visit Canada Life Centre on Thursday night. Capitals make unfortunate Aliaksei Protas injury move amid slump
The Washington Capitals have been in the middle of a major slump in play. They have lost nine of their last 13 games overall, but did secure a win on Monday against the Anaheim Ducks, 7-4. Still, the team is dealing with injuries, and the latest one is to Aliaksei Protas. Protas has been placed on injured reserve retroactive to January 1, according to Kyle Morton of Daily Faceoff. The forward last played on New Year’s Day against the Ottawa Senators. He played 14:55 in the game and scored a goal on three shots. Protas had been on a five-game point streak before going down with the injury, lighting the lamp four times and adding five assists in the last five outings. In the game against the Senators, Protas was taken down by Artem Zub and crashed hard into the boards, resulting in a lower-body injury. He was originally declared day-to-day. The movement to IR means that he will be out for at least seven calendar days. With the move being retroactive, he will be eligible to come off IR on January 9. This means Protas will miss the Wednesday night game against the Dallas Stars, but would be able to rejoin the team on the road against the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday. Protas broke out in the 2024-25 season. He lit the lamp 30 times while adding 36 helpers, good for 66 points. Before going down with the injury, the former third-round pick was on pace for 32 goals and 30 assists, showing the breakout was not a fluke. In a corresponding move, the Caps have recalled Brett Leason from the AHL’s Hershey Bears. If Leason dresses in the game, he will be making his season debut with the club. Washington has taken a step back from their 2024-25 pace, but the Capitals are still 22-15-6 this season. That places them in fourth in the Metropolitan Division, but also holding the top wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Caps, without Protas and Tom Wilson, will face the Stars, who have lost six straight, on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. ET. 49ers’ Kyle Shanahan gives Trent Williams, Ricky Pearsall injury updates to start playoff week
Over the weekend, the San Francisco 49ers lost to the Seattle Seahawks at home, ending their bid for the top spot in the both the NFC West and the NFC as a whole and ultimately setting up a matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles this weekend, with a spot in the divisional round on the line. The 49ers have been a resilient bunch all year, but they have a tough game against the defending Super Bowl champions on the road on the horizon. Recently, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan gave some key injury updates for that contest. “No practice for Ricky Pearsall and Trent Williams today to begin the week. Shanahan said Pearsall aggravated the PCL during the Bears game, but he did participate in the 49ers’ 3 light practice sessions last week,” reported David Lombardi of the SF Standard on X, formerly Twitter. Clayton Holloway of the NFL Network added on X that “Kyle says Trent is still ‘hurt’ and it’s not rest related.” The 49ers would certainly like to have both Pearsall and Williams in the lineup when they hit the field against an Eagles team that has been inconsistent this season but is still among the most talented teams in the league, particularly on defense, where they shut down numerous high-octane offenses in 2025. In any case, the 49ers and Eagles are set to kick off on Sunday at 4:30 pm ET from Philadelphia, with the winner moving on to the divisional round and the loser seeing their season come to an end. LeBron James, Victor Wembanyama both land on injury report before Lakers-Spurs clash
The San Antonio Spurs will host the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night in a clash between two of the top three teams in the Western Conference. Both teams are looking to continue their positive momentum, but the Lakers and Spurs are facing some injury concerns with LeBron James and Victor Wembanyama, respectively. James has not missed a game in recent weeks, and he is coming off a 30-8-8 game against the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday, a game Los Angeles won 111-103 for its fourth victory in its last five games. However, in the second night of a back-to-back, LeBron is on the Lakers’ injury report and listed as questionable to play in San Antonio due to left foot joint arthritis and his ongoing right sciatica issue. Since making his season debut in mid-November, James has not played in any of the Lakers’ back-to-backs. Wembanyama has been battling through left knee soreness since hyperextending his knee against the New York Knicks on Dec. 31. After missing two games with his knee soreness and bone bruise, Wemby returned to the court on Tuesday, scoring 30 points in 21 minutes off the bench in a 106-105 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. The Spurs are listing Wembanyama as questionable to play against the Lakers on Wednesday with the same left knee issue. Head coach Mitch Johnson offered confidence in his young talent’s potential of playing back-to-back games, claming Wembanyama “came out pretty good” in terms of his health on Tuesday. If the Spurs’ young star misses this game, it will be his 15th absence of the 2025-26 season, meaning he would only be allowed to miss two more games the rest of the year to remain eligible for postseason honors. LeBron has missed 16 games this season, meaning he can only miss one more game to remain eligible for All-NBA honors and keep his streak of 21 straight years making the All-NBA lit alive. Both the Lakers and Spurs have been cautious with their stars battling through various injuries this season, which is why James and Wembanyama could wind up sitting out this key Western Conference duel on Wednesday night, the second game in as many days for both teams. A win by the Lakers ties them with the Spurs in the West standings for the 2-seed, while a win by the home team inches them closer to the Oklahoma City Thunder at the top of the standings. San Antonio, which has defeated Oklahoma City three times already this season, enters Wednesday night’s battle with Los Angeles just 4.5 games back of the Thunder. Further updates on James’ and Wembanyama’s status will be provided closer to the start of Wednesday night’s game.
