Artists and writers push back on AI training with 'Stealing Isn’t Innovation' campaign
A new “Stealing Isn't Innovation” campaign has been launched in the United States that challenges how generative AI systems are trained on copyrighted material with neither permission nor payment. The effort from Human Artistry Campaign brings together U.S. creators who argue that current AI development practices are harming creative work, jobs, and long-term economic incentives. The campaign focuses on the widespread use of copyrighted books, music, films, journalism, and other creative works to train generative AI platforms. The campaign's organizers say large technology companies have copied vast amounts of content without authorization, shifting the cost of AI development onto creators… [Continue Reading]

Americans are increasingly turning to VPNs to avoid government surveillance online
A new survey reveals that VPN use is now common across the United States, with privacy concerns driving much of that adoption. The findings show that many VPN users want to keep their online activity private from government agencies, alongside concerns about tracking by companies and internet providers. The PasswordManager.com survey, which questioned 2,706 U.S. adults, found that 36 percent of respondents say they currently use a VPN. Among those users, 35 percent report using a VPN specifically to keep their online activity private from the government. The new protocol focuses on operating reliably in places where VPN connections often fail, which is becoming a common issue across both public and managed networks. TrustTunnel has been designed to resemble standard HTTPS traffic rather than stand out as a distinct tunnel. By closely matching normal web connections, it can blend in better to everyday internet activity, becoming harder to spot at the network level. Many modern networks rely on inspection techniques to filter or… [Continue Reading]

Stardock updates Connection Explorer with new firewall controls and activity graphs
Stardock has released an updated beta of Connection Explorer, the Windows app it launched a couple of months ago that lets users can see and understand all of the network activity on their PCs. The new update offers increased focus on transparency and control, and gives users a better understanding of how applications connect to the internet, as well as additional tools to manage that behavior. Connection Explorer is designed to show every active connection on a Windows system in real time. It breaks down which applications are communicating, where data is going, and how frequently those connections occur. It's… [Continue Reading]
