Who knew that the city’s rail project, almost always described as both late and over budget, may be carrying another adjective: “historic”?

Hawaii is experiencing a cruise resurgence not seen in nearly 20 years. Ships are returning in greater numbers, cabins are full, and visitor spending is once again flowing through harbors, restaurants, tour operators, transportation providers and small businesses across the islands. For many residents who depend on the visitor industry, this rebound brings long-awaited stability after years of economic uncertainty and disrupted travel patterns.

For more than a century, the tobacco industry has worked relentlessly to lure as many people as possible to its addictive products. Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in Hawaii, claiming more than 1,400 lives each year. Lifelong tobacco use cuts a decade off the average smoker’s life. Half of smokers will die from a tobacco-related disease.

Hawaii’s teaching ranks are far from stable: About half of new teachers in the state leave the profession within five years, and a recent statewide survey of Department of Education (DOE) employees found that 41% are “retention risks.” That’s simply too precarious in an occupation charged with helping to shape Hawaii’s next generation.

Two people died in a fire at the Old Puueo Poi Factory Building in Hilo early this morning, according to Hawaii County authorities.
