Flyers @ Golden Knights: How to watch, lineups, and gamethread
After a truly brutal showing against a struggling Rangers team on home ice on Saturday afternoon, and seeing their losing streak stretch on to six games, the Flyers are still looking around for answers and hoping that a trip out West will see their luck change. They have quite a steep hill to climb here — not only have they dug themselves quite a deep hole with their own play, but their first stop is Vegas to face off against the Golden Knights, who sit at the top of the standings in the Pacific. There’s a bit of a mismatch in the strength of their lineups, to say the least, but the hope is that the Flyers can at least manage some incremental improvement, and get things slowly moving in the right direction again. [BSH] Speaking of which, it seems a little weird, and a bit of a missed opportunity, that the Flyers haven’t used this moment to take a real run at the Trevor Zegras at center experiment. There’s a small positive to be found in that they were able to build up a bit more offense later in the game, found their legs eventually, but it remains that the damage was well and truly done by then, and waking up only when it turns to garbage time is not the most remarkable of feats. The Flyers’ sluggish, disorganized start was as much a killer in that one as was the less than optimal performance from Aleksei Kolosov, and the reality of their situation right now is that they simply cannot afford to keep not fully starting these games on time. They had the benefit of getting the first goal, which wasn’t nothing, but their inability to sustain that bit of momentum was troubling. This matchup will make things more challenging on them, but starting this game well and keeping up a more consistent level of energy and attention to detail will need to be a particular point of emphasis as they approach tonight’s game (and this challenging trip, broadly). Brink returns The Flyers’ troubles at the moment are numerous, but their depleted offense has certainly presented as one of the more significant ones, as they’re looking to really get their scoring game firing again. And while it’s going to take more than just one piece added into the mix to fix things around here, the group getting healthier is moving them in the right direction. The Flyers look like they’ll be getting a bit of a boost this evening, as Bobby Brink has been removed from IR and, after taking practice…

Boys Wrestling: Behind three champions, Grandview takes title of loaded Top of Rockies Invitational
LAFAYETTE | The Grandview boys wrestling team has high hopes for the upcoming Class 5A state tournament and succeeded at a tournament many consider as even tougher Saturday. For the first time, the Wolves claimed the championship at the Top of the Rockies Invitational, an impressive multi-classification collection of teams from multiple states that has descended annually on Centaurus High School for nearly three decades. Grandview amassed 6.5 points more than perennial state champion Pomona to finish atop a field of 41 scoring teams, which also included locals from Vista PEAK Prep and Smoky Hill. Coach Ryan Budd’s teams had a trio of champions in juniors JR Ortega (126 pounds) and Leland Day (285) among seven top-six placers. For Day, it was a second straight title at the rugged tournament and it ended in a championship match victory over Cherry Creek’s Oz Nowick, his former teammate. Day went into the tournament as the top seed and pinned his first three opponents in the opening period before a 4-1 win over Cody Kills On Top of Hardin (Montana). Once in the finals, Day earned a 7-1 win over Nowick, who he defeated for the third time. Ortega went into the 126 pound bracket (up from the 120 class in which he is ranked No. 1 by On The Mat) as the top seed as well and absolutely cruised to the championship with a string of five wins by technical falls that ended with an 18-3 victory over Pueblo East’s Alex Herburger. Lopez proved his top seed in the 165 pound bracket was justified with a performance that included a mix of pins and technical falls that put him into the finals against Monarch’s Levi Carlucci, who he topped by 4-1 decision. The fourth finalist for Grandview was junior Anthony Segura, who was the No. 22 seed in the 138-pound bracket. Three straight wins by fall landed Segura a spot in the championship match against Pomona’s Angel Serrano, who prevailed via 20-4 technical fall. Senior Jonathan Montes Gonzales (157) and junior Braxston Widrikis (144) both earned third place and junior Christian Skov (175) finished fourth for the Wolves. Vista PEAK Prep’s 23.5 points put it in 32nd with help from senior Ian Bacon, who placed fourth at 120 pounds. He rebounded from a loss to top-seeded Drake Vombaur from Severance in the quarterfinals with three straight wins on the consolation side to make the third-place match, which he lost to 12-8 to Eli Archibeque of Rio Rancho (New Mexico). Smoky Hill finished two points and two places behind Vista PEAK Prep in 34th and was paced by junior Jovani Galvan, who placed fourth at 138 pounds. Galvan — ranked No. 4 in 5A at 138 by On The Mat — went in as the No. 8 seed and won four matches before he dropped a 3-0 decision in the third-place match. Flyers missed big opportunity to test Trevor Zegras at center
The Philadelphia Flyers really could have cooked something up that so many fans have been begging to see all season long but instead kept more of the status quo as they are spiraling down the standings with loss after loss. It is extremely unfortunate that center Rodrigo Abols suffered a devastating injury on Saturday that has killed his chances to represent Latvia at the Olympics next month. It is something you just never want to see and a story you never want to hear about — a player’s dreams of representing his country on the biggest stage squashed like a bug just because his leg went completely the wrong way while facing the New York Rangers. Abols is now unofficially out for an indefinite amount of time, and after watching how he got hurt on the ice, we’re comfortable saying that it will be at least a couple months before we can even think about seeing him back in orange and black. That of course means that the Flyers needed to fill his role as fourth-line center and they did that almost immediately. Ever so quickly, the Flyers recalled veteran depth center and Phantoms leading scorer, Lane Pederson up to the big club and he will most likely just easily take that fourth-line spot until Abols’s leg is not the other way around. Pederson, unlike the other center options the Flyers have in the AHL, does actually have some NHL experience as the 28-year-old has appeared in 71 games split between the Vancouver Canucks, San Jose Sharks, Columbus Blue Jackets, and the Arizona Coyotes. But Pederson isn’t some sparkplug that is going to bring some high level of effective offense — not that Abols was either, but at least he had his 6-foot-4 frame to do some work. The newcomer is just someone to fill the role and someone that the Flyers do not have any plans for beyond this season. The opposite of that is Trevor Zegras. Flyers could have potentially found their first-line center with this opportunity All season long, Flyers fans and some media have been clamoring for the team to at least give the team’s leading scorer a bigger chance to thrive at his natural position. Give him multiple game’s worth of leash to stick down the middle and see what happens. Head coach Rick Tocchet has had other plans as he tries desperately to see what can lead to them winning the next hockey game and barely even thinking about what’s ahead in the schedule or in the rebuild. Zegras is that future as he came in here as a cast-off from Anaheim and instantly took over this team’s offense and has driven this team to the success they had in the first half. He’s essentially been a godsend and with Matvei Michkov not taking full control of his sophomore season, we can barely think of what this team would’ve look like without him. The only thing that would’ve been better is if Zegras was anchored down the middle and suddenly we would be envisioning everything falling into place as he is suddenly a bona fide top-six center and the Flyers’ only one. Instead, he has been locked to the wing of Christian Dvorak and we are all still wondering how the heck this team is going to suddenly acquire someone who can play down the middle at the top of the lineup. But now, with Abols out and a hole to fill at center, there was an opportunity for Rick Tocchet to switch his mentality and lock in Zegras as one of the team’s centers for the time being. It’s bad and a little sad that an injury to a nice player (whose dreams have been crushed, remember) means that fans might have got what they wanted, but it was really an opportunity to re-think the lineup. Looking at what the Flyers’ lineup could have been While we’re in fantasyland, as soon as Abols was confirmed to be out long-term, the Flyers could have looked at their collection of 12 forwards and put them together in a way to find things out instead of trying to squeeze as many points as possible from these games.…
