Match Awards from Bayern Munich’s 2-0 win against Union Saint-Gilloise
Bayern Munich faced a bit of a reality hit when faced against its Belgian opposition on Wednesday night. After breezing past Bundesliga opponent each week, the visitors put up an extremely tough side to break down. Despite their best efforts, Vincent Kompany’s second-half adjustments once again were enough to find a win at the Allianz Arena. Jersey Swap — Promise David This award might be one of Canadian bias. The striker has been terrific in the Belgian league this year, as the joint top goalscorer, and currently holds the highest Goals/90 rate. However, he was not able to showcase all his talents in Munich. Union Saint-Gilloise went with a tactical plan that did not favor the attack. It was clear David was going to have to do something special in order to beat Bayern, and that never came. After Bayern scored the quick two goals, we did not see much from the attack again, but the Canadian forward will certain be one to keep an eye on in the future. Der Kaiser — Jonathan Tah The Bayer Leverkusen alumni provided much needed stability at the back in this match. Tah was surrounded by some of the weaker options in defense but was able to still help the team record a clean sheet, even when his central partner was sent off. Needless to say, the experiment thus far with Tom Bischof at fullback has not been ideal. It feels as though Bischof has so much to offer this team, but it simply is not being extracted at the moment. There doesn’t seem to be room for the Hoffenheim talent to fit in the attack or midfield, and it is a crying shame. Later in the game once Bischof got more involved in the attack due to some personnel changes from the red card, Bischof looked great. Although, it is hard to argue that he should start when Olise, Musiala, and Diaz exist. Der Fussballgott — Joshua Kimmich The German veteran’s performance was two different tales. On one hand, Kimmich was a brilliant passer, great tackler, and overall led the midfield — he arguably could have been the man of the match. On the other hand, there is a growing feeling as though Kimmich makes more mistakes than in previous years. Kimmich blundered some passes which should be quite simple. One gets the feeling that Kimmich will never cost Bayern the game, but might not be changing it as much as he has in the past. One case in recent memory would be the match against Spain, where he gave Dani Olmo far too much time and space to operate near Germany’s box and it cost Germany the tournament. It seems like a growing number of people in the fanbase have turned against the longstanding Bayern player, but his ability to move the ball in the opposing half, namely crosses and long balls, is still exceptional. Apart from his mistakes, he might have had some of the best actions of the match as well. Der Bomber — Harry Kane In recent months, Harry Kane has been the focal point of offense but Bayern’s attack has so many options that it is rare that Kane gets all the praise. Despite a slow first half for the Englishman, he proved himself in the second showing his goal scoring ability. The two goals don’t necessarily indicate a man of the match performance, but it is hard to argue against the case he presented. His goals made all the difference, regardless of the fact he missed a penalty shot. Meister of the Match — Aleksander Pavlović The German midfielder is once again showing just how valuable he is to this squad. Often overlooked when playing beside Kimmich, Aleksander was the difference maker in the midfield today. His passing is truly among the world’s best and the academy product was simply brilliant today, especially in the opposition’s half. Hopefully, Julian Nagelsmann has big plans for the midfielder in his squad come summertime. Max Eberl admits there is still no update on Dayot Upamecano’s Bayern Munich contract situation as the wait drags on
About two weeks ago, French outlet L’Équipe reported that Dayot Upamecano had agreed a contract extension with Bayern Munich and even reported on certain contractual details. Bild reported that an agreement was very close. This was generally relieving news for Bayern fans, given Upamecano’s position as a key player in the squad and the mere 6 months left on his current contract. But when you ask Bayern’s board member for sport, Max Eberl, things are not nearly done. Speaking to reporters after Bayern’s 2-0 win over Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League, Eberl maintains that talks with the Frenchman are still on going. “We’re talking to him. When there’s something to announce, we’ll announce it – in either direction,” Eberl clarified, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, What is the hold up? Are Upamecano and his agent feeling out other offers? Are they still not satisfied with the offer? Or perhaps the Bayern social media team is just preparing a dramatic announcement? After all, Bayern fans were made to wait multiple weeks for Alphonso Davies’ official announcement because Davies was composing a song. At FC Hollywood, it would certainly be possible. Bayern Munich News: The aftermath of FC Bayern vs. Union Saint-Gilloise; Borussia Dortmund growing confident about Nico Schlotterbeck extension; and MORE!
Die Folgen: Bayern’s 2-0 win over Union Saint-Gilloise (Bavarian Football Works) Bayern Munich won 2-0 over Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League, but it was not pretty. The Bavarians were lackluster in the victory, often looking out of synch offensively, and sloppy defensively. The game frustrated fans, but also left them relieved by the end of the match. As always, let’s begin with a look at the start XI: 🔴 𝗨𝗖𝗟 𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗠 𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗦 🔴Here’s how we lineup for #FCBUSG tonight ©️ pic.twitter.com/DmzgAXPppq— FC Bayern (@FCBayernEN) January 21, 2026 Dayot Upamecano was absent with an illness, so Kim Min-jae stepped in for him. Meanwhile, Kompany continued to think outside the box as he start Joshua Kimmich in the central midfield, Tom Bischof at left-back, and Raphaël Guerreiro at right-back — robbing fans of seeing the midfield duo of Bischof and Aleksandar Pavlović. Yes, a minor inconvenience, but it is hard to argue with just about anything Kompany does (aside of starting Bischof at right-back like he did against RB Leipzig last weekend). Michael Olise was doing some dazzling dribbling early, but always held on just a bit too long. Kim picked up a yellow card in the 18th minute, which could have changed Kompany’s plan for later in the match. Bayern Munich was completely dominant, but not exactly going “balls to the wall” to score, which was a little odd. It was as if the squad was waiting for the perfect chance. Kimmich did not have a strong start to the match, but got better. Meanwhile, Aleksandar Pavlović was a passing machine (and even set a record). Bischof should get more minutes in the central midfield (broken record). In the 29th minute, Promise David beat the Tah and Guerreiro for a great header attempt, but Manuel Neuer was saved by his positioning. Otherwise, Bayern Munich would have been down 1-0. In general, Bayern Munich looked uninspired in the final third through 35 minutes. It did not get better for the rest of the half. Guerreiro swept in front of Kane to steal a header attempt and the Englishman did not appear to be thrilled with his teammate. There seemed to be a lack of chemistry between the wings and the outside-backs in this game. Karl was not effective. It was a Triple-U first half: Unmotivated, Uninspired, Unwatchable. It is not often we have seen Bayern Munich in a malaise under Kompany, but that is pretty much the best way to describe the first half of the match. Finally, in the 52nd minute, Olise hit an in-swinging corner from the right-side that was directly to the head of Kane, who put it home (Guerreiro was not there to jump in his way this time) for 1-0 lead. In the 53rd minute, Bayern Munich was awarded a penalty and Kane calmly hit it in for a 2-0 lead. Remember that yellow card that Kim received, well, it went full red in the 63rd minute after grabbing the arm of USG’s Raul Florucz. For Kim detractors, this was a combination of his worst traits — poor positioning, bad decisions, and being too aggressive (this time with his hands). You could really argue that USG’s David should have been assessed a red card for a foul on Michael Olise a few minutes later, but he was only given a yellow. To compensate for Kim’s absence, Alphonso Davies checked in for Guerreiro and Hiroki Itō stepped in for Karl in the 67th minute. Bayern Munich would be awarded another penalty in the 79th minute for a handball. Kane stepped to the spot and proceeded to hit the crossbar. It was just that kind of game. In the 83rd minute, Diaz sent Olise a perfect ball across the box and from point-blank range, Olise went #FullComan (or #FullSané if you prefer) and sent his shot 20 rows deep. The Frenchman almost had to intentionally hit it so poorly. Overall, this was not a banner effort for a Bayern Munich group that was, well, due for a stinker. Better now than in the latter stages of this competition, eh? In the end, Bayern Munich got the victory, though it surely was not anything to write home about. Onward and…

Bayern Munich star Kim Min-jae distraught over Champions League red card vs. Union Saint-Gilloise
Bayern Munich center-back Kim Min-jae has not had the easiest of seasons. While his play on the field has been solid, the Korean star has not had as many opportunities as he would like — and now he will have even less as he will serve a red card suspension in the Champions League. Kim picked up an early yellow card in the 18th minute, before some sloppy decision-making led to a second yellow card in the 65th minute. The defender looked devastated and bewildered. Bild (via @iMiaSanMia) caught up with Kim after the game and he was still upset about causing his team to play a man down for the last half hour of the match: Kim Min-jae was stunned and affected by his sending off against Union SG yesterday. He was heard telling the linesman: ‘That’s not right! I swear to God, that’s not a yellow card!’ – Kim then immediately made apologetic gestures towards the fans as he left the pitch, who in turn encouraged him with applause. After the game, Kim told @BILD: “I’m wondering: Was that a red card? In the dressing room after the game, I apologized to each of my teammates individually. I’m sorry. I felt good and would have loved to have played longer and shown even more. What really helped me was the reaction of the fans, the applause.” Typically, Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany is proactive about managing players with a yellow card in hand, but the absence of Dayot Upamecano due to an illness and a slew of other injuries or illnesses on the backline had Kompany’s hands tied.
