Such is the unpredictable nature of free agency, and Bregman has plenty of suitors, not excluding a Detroit Tigers franchise that has coveted him for years. And while the most even-keeled Sox supporters are well-prepared for Bregman to join another club, even if it would be surprising, one thing that absolutely no Red Sox fan on Earth could bear to witness is Bregman joining the Toronto Blue Jays. To Boston Red Sox fans who are praying nightly for Pete Alonso to arrive as a Christmas gift, another Alonso update has surfaced! This time in the form of free-agent intel from The Athletic‘s Jim Bowden, who wrote on Wednesday that the New York Mets super-slugger is most likely to end up with the Red Sox or re-join the Mets, above all other outcomes. “There are several teams besides the Mets who are potentially shopping for a first baseman, including the Red Sox, Pirates, Reds, Angels, Rays, Nationals, Diamondbacks, Rockies and Twins,” Bowden wrote (subscription required). “However, his two most likely landing spots remain the Mets and Red Sox.” Bowden’s reporting aligns with recent info from MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, who identified Boston as the suitor most capable of swiping Alonso from Queens in the dark of the offseason night. “I believe the Red Sox are the strongest contender of anyone to take Pete Alonso away from the New York Mets.” – @jonmorosi It shouldn’t be an either or with Alex Bregman or Pete Alonso. If the rest of the Eastern Conference thought they wouldn’t have to worry about the Boston Celtics this year, they should think again. The Celtics may not have Jayson Tatum, but they’re not messing around. If they’ve proven anything over the first six weeks of the season, it’s that they can still hang with the best teams in the East. Boston proved that again on Tuesday, taking down the New York Knicks 123-117 at TD Garden. The Celtics overcame an early deficit and held off a late comeback, improving to 12-9 with their seventh win in their last nine games. Boston has been especially good against the Eastern Conference lately, knocking off the Orlando Magic, Detroit Pistons, Cleveland Cavaliers and the Knicks over the last 10 days. Its lone defeat during that stretch was a narrow road loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. They’ve beaten four of the top six seeds in the East and have a 6-3 record against them, including 6-1 in their last seven matchups. Boston has been quite feisty without Tatum, taking the Eastern Conference by surprise. The Celtics may not be the most talented team in the league, but they play hard and keep finding ways to win basketball games. Up next is an easy road matchup against the Washington Wizards on Thursday, followed by a big home game against the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday. The Lakers have the second-best record in the Western Conference at 15-5, so that will be another important test for Boston. The Boston Red Sox have already made one major addition to the starting rotation by adding Sonny Gray. They could be looking at making another. The American League East is no joke. The Toronto Blue Jays, fresh off a run to the World Series, have already signed Dylan Cease. The division figures to get even tougher, and there is no such thing as too much pitching. NorthJersey.com’s Andrew Tredinnick predicted on Tuesday that the Red Sox would trade for Framber Valdez. A rotation featuring Valdez, Garret Crochet, Gray and Brayan Bello would be great. “Boston gets another dynamic left-hander atop its rotation,” Tredinnick wrote of Boston getting Valdez. “It works because Valdez works more north-south and Garrett Crochet goes west to east.” Valdez has been a great pitcher for the Houston Astros in the last six seasons. Since 2020, he has had a 3.23 ERA in 154 games. He is a two-time All-Star and has received Cy Young Award votes in four separate seasons. Last season, he had a 3.66 ERA in 31 starts. He threw two complete games and covered 192 innings. He would be a great addition to any rotation, but the Red Sox could use another elite arm in a division that features sluggers like Aaron Judge and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. The Red Sox could be focusing on spending money on an impact bat in free agency. Having already added Gray, a power hitter could be their next priority. However, Valdez would cost them plenty. Spotrac projects him to sign a six-year, $199 million deal. Spending that much on another pitcher would limit their ability to spend on position players. However, they could still trade for an impact bat.
