The exuberance for all things AI

An artificial intelligence startup that helps developers write and debug code is now worth nearly as much as United Airlines. A two-month-old AI computer company raised a massive $475 million seed round, with plans to secure even more financing soon. And a platform for ranking AI models is now valued at nearly $2 billion, less than a year after it was spun out of an academic project. The exuberance for all things AI…

Trump doubles down on Greenland

NUUK, Greenland — U.S. President Donald Trump linked his aggressive stance on Greenland to last year’s decision not to award him the Nobel Peace Prize, telling Norway’s prime minister that he no longer felt “an obligation to think purely of Peace,” in a text message released on Monday. Trump’s message to Jonas Gahr Støre appears to ratchet up a standoff between Washington and its closest allies over his threats to take over Greenland, a self-governing territory of NATO member Denmark. On Saturday, Trump announced a 10% import tax starting in February on goods from eight nations that have rallied around Denmark and Greenland, including Norway. Those countries issued a forceful rebuke. Many longtime allies of the U.S. remained resolute that Greenland was not for sale but encouraged Washington to discuss solutions. In a statement on social media, the European Union’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the bloc had “no interest to pick a fight” but would “hold our ground.” The White House has not ruled out taking control of the strategic Arctic island by force. Asked whether Trump could invade Greenland, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said on Monday that “you can’t leave anything out until the president himself has decided to leave anything out.” British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also sought to de-escalate tensions on Monday. “I think this can be resolved and should be resolved through calm discussion,” he said, adding that he did not believe military action would occur. Strong opposition in Greenland to U.S. threats In a sign of how tensions have increased in recent days, thousands of Greenlanders marched over the weekend in protest of any effort to take over their island. Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said in a Facebook post Monday that the tariff threats would not change their stance. “We will not be pressured,” he wrote. Meanwhile, Naaja Nathanielsen, Greenland’s minister for business, minerals, energy, justice and equality, said that she was moved by the quick response of allies to the tariff threat and said it showed that countries realize “this is about more than Greenland.” “I think a lot of countries are afraid that if they let Greenland go, what would be next?” Trump cites Nobel in text to Norwegian leader Trump’s Sunday message to Gahr Støre, released by the Norwegian government, read in part: “Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace.” It concluded: “The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland.” The Norwegian leader said Trump’s message was a reply to an earlier missive sent on behalf of himself and Finnish President Alexander Stubb, in which they conveyed their opposition to the tariff announcement, pointed to a need to de-escalate, and proposed a telephone conversation among the three leaders. “Norway’s position on Greenland is clear. Greenland is a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and Norway fully supports the Kingdom of Denmark on this matter,” the Norwegian leader said in a statement. “As regards the Nobel Peace Prize, I have clearly explained, including to President Trump what is well known, the prize is awarded by an independent Nobel Committee and not the Norwegian Government.” The Norwegian Nobel Committee is an independent body whose five members are appointed by the Norwegian Parliament. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended the president’s approach in Greenland during a brief Q&A with reporters in Davos, Switzerland, which is hosting the World Economic Forum meeting this week. “I think it’s a complete canard that the president would be doing this because of the Nobel,” Bessent said, immediately after saying he did not “know anything about the president’s letter to Norway.” Trump has openly coveted the peace prize, which the committee awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado last year. Bears Enter the Offseason With a $24 Million Problem Looming

Kevin Byard was supposed to be a bridge signing for the Chicago Bears. Instead, he became the backbone of their defense. And now, with his contract expiring, he’s about to become one of the franchise’s toughest offseason decisions.Signed to a modest two year, $15 million contract before the 2024 season, Byard looked like a savvy veteran addition at the time. But what he turned into under defensive coordinator Dennis Allen was something far more valuable: the leader and playmaker behind the NFL’s most turnover-hungry defense. And that success is exactly what has created Chicago’s looming $24 million problem.Byard’s 2025 campaign was elite: League high six interceptions Defensive captain for a first place Bears team Third career Pro Bowl selection Key piece of a Chicago defense that led the NFL with 31 takeaways The projected price tag GettyBears Safety Kevin Byard Jacob Infante of Windy City Gridiron recently predicted Kevin Byard will command a two year, $24 million extension this offseason, $12M per year. For a 32 year old safety, that’s significant money. Not quite market-resetting, but well above what most veterans his age receive. Recent history shows teams are hesitant to commit big dollars to safeties over 30, even productive ones. The concern for Chicago isn’t whether Byard deserves the deal (he absolutely does based on performance). The issue is projection. This was Byard’s first multi-interception season since 2022. He hadn’t made a Pro Bowl since 2021 before this resurgence. Paying him now means betting that this wasn’t a late career spike but rather proof he’s a perfect fit in Allen’s system moving forward. That’s a risky wager for a front office that values sustainability. Yet letting him walk could ruin the identity of a defense built entirely around creating turnovers. The stakes get even higher when you zoom out cause fellow starting safety Jaquan Brisker is also entering free agency. That means the Chicago Bears could realistically head into 2026 without either starting safety from a defense that just led the league in takeaways. Byard’s price tag alone is difficult. Pair that with Brisker’s uncertain future, and suddenly the Bears are staring at a potential full reset on the back end.Byard wants to stay… But at what cost? GettyBears Safety Kevin Byard Byard has been clear about his mindset. He loves Chicago. Loves Allen’s scheme. Loves the locker room. But he’s also realistic that he’s year to year at this stage of his career.“For me personally, I would love to be here,” Byard said back in May. “I’ve loved being here over the last year and going forward. This thing is year-to-year and honestly, it’s probably going to be year-to-year for the rest of my career until I’m done playing.”So Chicago is stuck in between: Reward the veteran who helped transform their defense… Or risk losing him and Brisker and forcing a major secondary rebuild.Kevin Byard was a steal when the Chicago Bears signed him. Now he’s expensive because he outplayed that contract in every possible way. That’s the offseason problem looming over Halas Hall. And it’s one the Bears can’t afford to get wrong. NFL Insider Drops Truth Bomb on Bills Head Coach Opening

The Buffalo Bills‘ offseason only began 48 hours ago, but they have already made some big changes. Less than two days after their season came to an end with a crushing 33-30 overtime defeat at the hands of the Denver Broncos in their divisional round playoff matchup, the team decided to fire head coach Sean McDermott on Monday morning.Regardless of the team’s reasoning for firing McDermott, there’s no doubt that this is a shocking move. Now, the Bills will have to move quickly to find his replacement, as they are already behind the eight-ball when it comes to their head coach search. However, according to one NFL insider, they have a key advantage over the rest of the league that should help them in their quest to find McDermott’s replacement.NFL Insider Gets Real on Bills’ Head Coach Search 💻 @TomPelissero Who's on #BillsMafia head coach radar after they fired Sean McDermott after nine seasons?#NFL #NFLPlayoffs pic.twitter.com/L35OS15kts — Rich Eisen Show (@RichEisenShow) January 19, 2026 McDermott took over as the Bills’ head coach in 2017, and while he led the team to a lot of success during the regular season, the same was not true for the playoffs. During Josh Allen’s time under center for Buffalo, he has made it to the AFC Championship Game just once, and after they failed to advance past the divisional round this year, that ended up being what cost McDermott his job.Now that Buffalo doesn’t have a head coach, it will have to begin searching for a new one. The immediate question that everybody has involves who the team will target. Two of the top candidates in this cycle, John Harbaugh and Kevin Stefanski, have already come off the board, and the Bills won’t be able to interview candidates from the four remaining playoff teams until they are eliminated.Considering how this move was made only a few hours ago, it’s tough to know which direction Buffalo is looking to go with for its coaching search. While it may seem like the team’s options are limited, though, the opposite may end up being true. That’s because, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the Bills are now widely believed to have the most attractive head coach opening across the NFL.“Everybody is going to be lining up for this job,” Pelissero said on “The Rich Eisen Show.” “Anyone who is a coaching candidate who has an opportunity to go and interview in Buffalo is going to race (there). They will fly themselves in. They will pay for their own per diem. There’s no question whatsoever, this is now the job.”Who Should the Bills Hire as Their Next Head Coach? GettyGeneral manager Brandon Beane of the Buffalo Bills. Pretty much any head coach candidate is going to want an opportunity to work with Allen, because he will provide them with a great chance of succeeding right off the bat. Only a handful of candidates will have a real shot at landing this job, though. Bills’ offensive coordinator Joe Brady, Broncos’ quarterbacks coach Davis Webb, and former New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll have all emerged as potential candidates right from the get-go.Ultimately, it is still too early to know what Buffalo wants to do with its head coach position, but it will have the pick of the litter once it narrows its search down. So while it seemed like some coaches were closing in on landing new jobs, the emergence of the Bills in the head coach market has once again drastically changed the look of the head coach carousel. Celebrating Dr. King: Boston’s MLK Breakfast the longest running celebration celebration of its kind in U.S.

A full house of community members and dignitaries turned out for the 56th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast in Boston on Monday. “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic life, transformative leadership and enduring legacy is central to the City of Boston,” said Mayor Michelle Wu. The 2026 celebration highlighted “the Kings’ stand for justice and honors Dr. King’s influence that continues to inspire action and change in our city,” she continued. Gov. Maura Healey highlighted a quote from King on Monday: “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of convenience or comfort, but where he stands at time of challenge and controversy.” “This is one of those moments,” Healey said. “And you are in the right place to stand up to injustice, to advance freedom, and teach young people the truth so they can lead the way forward.” Boston’s MLK Breakfast is the longest running event of its kind in the U.S.. Ticker: IMF upgrades outlook; Fed chair to attend SUPCO argument on Cook case

An unexpectedly sturdy world economy is likely to shrug off President Donald Trump’s protectionist trade policies this year, thanks partly to a surge of investment in artificial intelligence in North America and Asia, the International Monetary Fund said in a report out Monday. The 191-nation lending organization expects that global growth will come in at 3.3% this year, same as in 2025 but up from from the 3.1% it had forecast for 2026 back in October. The world economy “continues to show notable resilience despite significant US-led trade disruptions and heightened uncertainty,” IMF chief economist Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas and his colleague Tobias Adrian wrote in a blog post accompanying the latest update to the fund’s World Economic Outlook. The U.S. economy, benefiting from the strongest pace of technology investment since 2001, is forecast to expand 2.4% this year. Fed chair to attend SUPCO argument on Cook case Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell will attend the Supreme Court’s oral argument Wednesday in a case involving the attempted firing of Fed governor Lisa Cook, an unusual show of support by the central bank chair. The high court is considering whether President Donald Trump can fire Cook, as he said he would do in late August, in an unprecedented attempt to remove one of the seven members of the Fed’s governing board. Powell plans to attend the high court’s Wednesday session, according to a person familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
