If the NFL playoffs began today, the Kansas City Chiefs would not take part. They are 5-4, but currently the eight-seed in the AFC. Yet, they are still the odds-on favorite to reach the Super Bowl. That, of course, has a lot to do with their pedigree and who their quarterback is. But this week, Patrick Mahomes will face maybe his biggest test of the season as the Chiefs prepare to face the Denver Broncos. On Wednesday, ESPN’s Field Yates broke down why that is. He also detailed Mahomes’ surprising struggles vs. the division foe. “You might see his career stats against the Broncos and see 13 wins in 14 games for the Chiefs… but Mahomes has only accounted for 20 passing touchdowns in those 14 games.” Indeed, Kansas City has won 13 of Mahomes’ 14 starts against the Broncos, going back to his second season in the NFL. But the vast majority have been very close and low-scoring. He then detailed why this year may prove to be the most difficult test yet. But I think this is the best version of the Broncos defense.” “The Broncos are as good as it gets defensively in the red zone… allow the third fewest trips to the red zone this season. You don’t get there that often. No team has held opponents to either field goals, turnovers, or turnover on downs in the red zone at a higher percentage than the Broncos defense. They tighten the screws when you do get there.” In his career, the Chiefs quarterback has 20 touchdown passes to 11 interceptions. For most players, a 2-to-1 ratio is solid, but not for Mahomes. The game is in Denver, making it that much more difficult. Mahomes is tied with Steve Young (13-1 vs Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams) with the best winning percentage in NFL history against a single opponent with at least 14 starts. The Cowboys returned to The Star this week with heavy hearts after the death of defensive end Marshawn Kneeland during the team's off week.The team held a private candlelight vigil inside the Ford Center on Tuesday night. Owner Jerry Jones, coach Brian Schottenheimer and Kneeland's girlfriend, Catalina Mancera, were among those who shared eulogies. Schottenheimer met with the media for the first time since Kneeland's death on Wednesday and revealed that Mancera is pregnant."My heart is heavy. Our team’s heart is heavy. We don't move on, but do we move forward." Schottenheimer said, via Todd Archer of ESPN.Kneeland died last Thursday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a police chase and a wreck with another car, according to authorities.The Cowboys held a virtual team meeting on Friday, with many players, coaches and staff out of town on the off week. After their return to The Star on Monday, the Cowboys met again as a team. Grief specialists have been available all week, with a "brotherhood breakfast" held Tuesday morning.The Cowboys will practice for the first time without their teammate on Thursday as they begin preparations for their Monday night game against the Raiders."It was hard to hear the pain that some of these guys are dealing with, but it was also very uplifting to hear the strength from other guys," Schottenheimer said. "That's the beauty of a team. One side of the ball is [not] playing good, the other side of the ball has to pick them up. When one guy is hurting, someone else has to pick them up. If the head coach is hurting, someone's got to pick me up. And I'm hurting. I'm hurting. And these guys have picked me up, and I've picked them up."That's what we're going to continue to do because we love one another. It's what a family does."The Cowboys will honor Kneeland's memory in several ways, including with a helmet decal. They have also started a Marshawn Kneeland Memorial Fund for Mancera and the couple's baby."We want to make sure she's taken care of, and the baby's taken care of for the rest of their lives. Our guys are very — it's very important to them and to us." Schottenheimer said.

As he awaits a liver transplant, Bernie Kosar posted on social media that doctors are trying to stop his internal bleeding.The former NFL quarterback wrote that he underwent "two aggressive procedures" the past couple of days and was scheduled for a third on Wednesday.Kosar, 61, was close to receiving a liver transplant last weekend, but he said in a social media video that it was delayed because the donor's organ was infected. He asked fans for "love, support and actual prayers."Kosar revealed to Cleveland Magazine last summer that he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and cirrhosis of the liver. He said he realized his poor health while attending the Browns’ final home game of 2023.The Browns made Kosar a first-round pick in the 1985 supplemental draft, and he played in Cleveland until 1993. He later spent time with the Cowboys and Dolphins.

Davante Adams did not practice on Wednesday with his oblique injury, but Rams coach Sean McVay expects the wide receiver to play Sunday."He’s making good progress," McVay said, via Stu Jackson of the team website. "That's what he tells me (that he expects to play). He's feeling good, and so I trust the man. He'll be ready."Adams had six receptions for 77 yards and a touchdown in the Rams' win over the 49ers on Sunday. He left in the second half with what the team initially called a back injury.Adams has 42 receptions for 568 yards and a league-leading nine touchdowns this season.Defensive end Kobie Turner (back) also didn't practice.Wide receiver Jordan Whittington (back) was limited, and cornerback Darious Williams (shoulder) was a full participant.
