Canucks Bomb Sherwood Trade with Sharks
The Vancouver Canucks ended months of speculation by finalizing a trade with the San Jose Sharks on Monday. The Canucks sent impending UFA forward Kiefer Sherwood to the Sharks in exchange for two second-round picks and depth defenseman Cole Clayton. The return raised more than a few eyebrows as Sherwood had been one of the hottest names on the market this season. The prevailing chatter posited that the asking price for Sherwood was a first-round pick and a mid to high-level prospect. The final trade, however, suggests that the Canucks did not get what they wanted. The club most likely pivoted to the best available trade. Instead of getting a first-round pick, now the Canucks have two seconds, one in the 2026 NHL Draft and the other in 2027.The draft picks, while certainly useful, could be part of other deals moving forward. The Canucks may have other trades in mind. And so, the two second-rounders come in handy. But there’s another perspective here. The Canucks are in the midst of a rebuild. As such, one of the core principles of a rebuild is to stock up on as many draft picks as possible. That’s what this trade accomplishes. The rationale would seem that two picks, even if second-rounders, are much better than just one pick. The Canucks now have four picks in the first two rounds of this year’s draft. That situation bodes well as this draft is deep, per the current consensus.Canucks Add AHL-Level Depth Defenseman in Sherwood TradeThe other puzzling part of this trade is the acquisition of Cole Clayton. Clayton is a defenseman who’s never seen NHL action. He went undrafted and has made his way up the minor league ranks.Clayton spent four seasons with the Cleveland Monsters, the AHL affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets. He signed this season with the San Jose Barracuda, putting up two goals and five points in 33 games. That situation does not suggest that Clayton will be a piece for the Canucks at the AHL level. While he’s still 25, Vancouver may not necessarily view him as a key piece at the NHL level. That said, if the Canucks begin to move out bodies on the NHL blue line, spots will open up. That situation could open up an opportunity for Clayton to get his foot in the NHL door.Vancouver Overplayed its Hand with SherwoodUltimately, the Canucks overplayed their hand with Sherwood. The 30-year-old winger went from a hot commodity to practically a cap dump. This deal is a home run for the Sharks. It signals that they are serious about making the playoffs this season. But for Vancouver, it signals they may have waited too long to move Sherwood. It’s tough to know if there were better offers out there. But the eventual outcome of this negotiation clearly shows that the Canucks took the best offer available to them. That’s no bueno for the team moving forward as they look to hoard pieces for their rebuild. Like Heavy Sports's content? Be sure to follow us. Celtics Guard Goes Against Boston Fans with NFL Prediction
The Boston Celtics have been one of the biggest surprises in the NBA this season. Without Jayson Tatum, their best player, the Celtics are the second-best team in the Eastern Conference standings. Jaylen Brown has stepped up to be the top option on the team.Derrick White has also played some of the best basketball of his career. Right now, the Celtics have the second-best offense in the NBA on the strength of how well Brown and White have played. White has only played in Boston for five seasons now.White is originally from Colorado, and there is a pretty big football game happening next weekend in Denver. When asked who is going to win the AFC Championship game, Celtics fans might not be pleased with White’s answer. GettyBoston Celtics guard Derrick White dribbles the ball. (Photo by Brian Fluharty/Getty Images) Derrick White Picks Broncos over PatriotsWhen asked who would win the AFC Championship between the Patriots and the Broncos, White decided to go with his hometown team.“I like the Broncos, alright. I like the Broncos. I don’t know how they’re gonna win, but they’re gonna win. It’s in Denver. New England has struggled in Denver in the past. It’ll be a good game, though.”When asked about Jarrett Stidham, who will have to start the game for an injured Bo Nix, White didn’t sound quite as confident.“But Jarrett Stidham, I’ve been watching highlights. I’m being positive with it right now, so it should be a good game.”White is confident that his favorite NFL team will somehow pull the upset, despite not having their starting quarterback available. White is familiar with being the underdog, which is something Boston has been all season long. He’s hoping the Broncos can play like the Celtics.White is well aware that Celtics fans won’t be pleased with him rooting for the Broncos, since most of them are Patriots fans also. He doesn’t care, though. All he cares about is the Broncos possibly winning the AFC title so they can play for a Super Bowl. GettyBoston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown celebrates. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images) The Celtics Might not be the Best Team in BostonIf the Patriots end up winning the game next weekend, the Celtics will no longer have the claim of being the best team in the Boston area. Playing for a Super Bowl will be better than anything the Celtics are able to do this season, short of playing for an NBA title.Adding Tatum back to the lineup might give them a shot to compete for a championship since he is the best player on the roster. Having Tatum would make the Celtics a much more dangerous team in the playoffs. He still doesn’t have a definitive timeline for his return, however.White would be happy to watch the Broncos win the AFC Championship and play for the Super Bowl. Celtics fans might be mad with him for a couple of weeks if that scenario were to occur. Like Heavy Sports's content? Be sure to follow us. Phillies Named Surprise Landing Spot for Top Free Agent
The Philadelphia Phillies could soon make a shock move for a top free agent pitcher. Philadelphia has, so far, mostly focused on hitting during the current offseason. The club has re-signed stars Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto this winter, while also adding Adolis Garcia to the mix.The Phillies attempted to bring in Alex Bregman and Bo Bichette as well. While potentially landing one of the two top free agent hitters seemed somewhat likely, both ultimately signed elsewhere. With high-end free agent hitters now mostly off the board, Philadelphia may turn to pitching in the coming days.MLB insider Jon Morosi made an appearance on MLB Network on January 19 to discuss Framber Valdez’s future. The free agent pitcher is now seen as the top available player in his position. Morosi claimed that Valdez is not exactly close to selecting a new team just yet. This is particularly interesting because many in the industry believed the former Astro would sign fairly quickly after Ranger Suarez did. The now-former Phillie recently signed a five-year, $130 million deal with the Boston Red Sox.Morosi went on to link Valdez as a possible Suarez replacement in Philadelphia. “We have not heard a ton about the team that Ranger Suarez left as being a possible landing spot for Framber Valdez,” said the insider. “But when you look at the Phillies depth chart for pitching, there’s a spot there where you could certainly see a spot for a veteran sliding in. So I would say let’s not close off the possibility of Framber to the Phillies quite yet.”Philadelphia Phillies Would Have One of the Best MLB Rotations with Framber Valdez GettyFramber Valdez has proven to be a reliable veteran pitcher throughout his career. Valdez has been heavily linked with the Baltimore Orioles and New York Mets in recent days. It certainly seems that if one of these teams gives the pitcher what he wants, he would likely agree to a deal. Nevertheless, both teams, especially New York, appear hesitant to give veteran pitchers long-term contracts. Valdez is now 32 and recently posted his highest ERA (3.66) since becoming a full-time starter in Houston. With teams around the league hesitant to sign Valdez, Philadelphia can swoop in and make its move. Led by Zack Wheeler, Cristopher Sanchez, Jesus Luzardo, and Suarez, the Phillies had one of the better rotations in MLB in 2025. In fact, they led the entire league with 84 total quality starts on the campaign. They also topped MLB with the most combined innings pitched per start. As Morosi points out, Suarez’s departure leaves a substantial hole in their rotation. Valdez has proven to be a reliable innings eater throughout his career with the Astros and would seemingly fit in well in Philadelphia. Sanchez was the only Phillies starter to toss more innings than Valdez in 2025.Valdez Could Benefit from Philadelphia’s Double Play DuoPhiladelphia has certainly shown the ability to pivot this offseason quickly. After missing out on Bregman, they had an intense interest in Bichette. When that move failed to materialize, they opted to re-sign Realmuto within hours. It is possible that the club could soon turn to pitching with some of the money they previously set aside. As MLB.com’s Travis Sawchik recently pointed out, Valdez would thrive on a team with solid infield defense. This is due to the starter being an extreme ground-ball pitcher. While Alec Bohm’s future is in the air, Philadelphia’s middle infield of Trea Turner and Bryson Stott are both solid fielders at their positions. Like Heavy Sports's content? Be sure to follow us.
