Academic innovation can help budding entrepreneurs overcome future challenges

As globalisation and technological advancements continue to reshape the way we live and work, educational institutions must also evolve to help equip students with the right mindset and skills to tackle the challenges in our rapidly changing world. Academic innovation has been the guiding principle at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), in the city of Suzhou, in eastern China’s Jiangsu province, which is an international, research-focused joint venture between Xi’an Jiaotong University...

LeBron James snubbed as an NBA All-Star Game starter for first time in 21 years

LeBron James’ 21-year NBA All-Star Game starting streak came to an end on Tuesday after the Los Angeles Lakers star was excluded from the 10 starters named for next month’s midseason showpiece. The 41-year-old NBA icon, who has been named as an All-Star starter in every season since 2005, was the biggest omission from this year’s event, at the Los Angeles Clippers’ Intuit Dome on February 15. The 10 starters – five…

Viral Zumba video triggers police probe in Malaysia over revealing attire

A “back to school”-themed Zumba session in Malaysia is being investigated by police and Islamic authorities after viral footage showing headscarf-wearing instructors dressed in revealing attire piqued censorious conservatives’ anger. The aerobics session, live-streamed on Saturday morning, quickly triggered a social media pile-on, with critics accusing the organisers of violating religious and public decency norms in the Muslim-majority country. On Sunday, Selangor’s Islamic Religious Department...

What is glamping like in Hong Kong? A reluctant camper and his family try it out

I could not have thought of anything worse than camping, even the “comfortable” kind. Yet this is exactly what my wife, who is much more outdoorsy than I, was trying to convince me to do. Glamping – a portmanteau of “glamorous” and “camping” – is camping, but with elevated versions of all the typical amenities pre-prepared and waiting for guests on-site. Think Instagrammable tents complete with mattresses and…

Bangladesh’s student leaders ‘sidelined’ by Islamist allies in poll pact

Bangladesh’s student leaders, one of the main driving forces behind the mass protests that brought down former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024, now face an uncertain political future. Despite their central role in the uprising, the youth movement has been granted only a small share of parliamentary seats under a new electoral alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami – an Islamist party that was long politically…

Italy uncovers 2,000-year-old basilica designed by Vitruvius, the ‘father of architecture’

Italian officials ‍on Monday hailed the discovery of a more than 2,000-year-old public building attributed to Vitruvius, the ancient Roman architect and engineer known as the “father of architecture”. “It is a sensational finding … something that our grandchildren will be talking about,” Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli told a press conference. Vitruvius, who lived in the 1st century BC, is celebrated for having written De architectura, or The Ten Books on Architecture, the oldest...

Chinese automotive suppliers speed up localisation to increase global market share

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) supply chain vendors are adding another dimension to their go-global drive: designing batteries and lidar sensors for models by international marques that cater to overseas drivers. As leading players like BYD secure mega deals with major carmakers like Ford, Chinese automotive suppliers that once trailed their global peers are now stamping their authority on the EV sector. Syrian deal unravels as sides clash and Isis prisoners escape

A day after a sweeping deal was announced between the Syrian government and the country’s main Kurdish-led force, the agreement appeared to be falling apart on Monday. After new outbreaks of clashes Monday, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces issued a statement calling for “all of our youth” to “join the ranks of the resistance”. “Just as our comrades in 2014 forged a historic resistance in Kobani and turned it…

I had the great privilege of chatting with Baseball America National Writer Carlos Collazo. We had a very fun discussion about his background, the Nationals’ new regime, the state of the Nats farm system and the 2026 draft. He provided great insights, as you would expect from one of the best prospect evaluators and writers in the space. How He Got Started: Ever since he was a kid, Carlos Collazo has been in love…

Why did the Falcons hire Kevin Stefanski as their new head coach?

He’s here. Kevin Stefanski is Atlanta’s newest head coach, and he faces a daunting job with these Falcons fresh off a rough stint in Cleveland. The Falcons were one of the league’s most exciting teams a decade ago and Stefanski one of its most promising coaches more recently than that, but the past several years have diminished both. Now begins a critical chapter for team and coach. The Falcons need to break an eight-year streak of losing seasons and prove they haven’t just been collecting interesting talent with no real team-building plan, and they’re turning to Stefanski to wrangle this roster into a winner. Stefanski needs to—and wants to—show that the losing and dysfunction that came to define the past couple seasons of his tenure with the Browns was due to the front office and ownership more than his ability to coach and lead. Matt Ryan shied away from a first-time head coach or a truly familiar face and went with a seasoned, offensively minded option well-regarded by past players but fired by one of the least competent organizations in football. Like every other hire this cycle and every other cycle, it’s a bet rather than a sure thing. So why did the Falcons hire Stefanski? What does he bring to the table, and where might he stumble? Why they did it There are a few reasons. One is demeanor, which we’ll end up talking about a lot in this piece. Matt Ryan clearly remembers his days with Mike Smith, Mike Mularkey, Kyle Shanahan, Dirk Koetter, and Dan Quinn fondly, because he described someone with the ability to be calm and even-keeled, a coach who can connect effectively with players, and a proven leader as some of his requirements. There will always be quibbles, but Stefanski clearly checked those boxes with the Falcons; their level of interest in John Harbaugh (similarly regarded as a reasonable, players’ coach option) tells you they were looking hard at a certain personality type. While Ryan promised not to be married to an offensive-minded head coach, casting a wide net with interviews, the Falcons always seemed likely to hire one. Their offensive coordinator carousel under Dan Quinn in particular—they ran through Kyle Shanahan, Steve Sarkisian, and Dirk Koetter in six seasons—likely left a lasting impression on Ryan, who is looking to get this organization to build around Michael Penix Jr. or (failing that) another young quarterback who will benefit from continuity and stability. The failure of Zac Robinson to consistently lift the Falcons offense underscored how fraught the hiring process can be for a defensive-minded head coach, too, but the Falcons have far too much money and far too many draft picks invested in that side of the ball for mediocrity. The Falcons, no strangers to losing and dysfunction of their own, likely came to feel comfortable with Stefanski stepping into a tough situation and being able to both keep his cool and lift the boats in Atlanta’s particular harbor. They know he lost and lost a lot the last two years with the Browns, but his ability to hold the locker room together likely appealed to them as much as his offensive acumen. Ryan and Blank also would be aware of both the aftermath of the Deshaun Watson trade—it could have been Atlanta, after all—and Cleveland’s reputation for being a difficult place for coaches to work. Stefanski actually has experience guiding a team to the playoffs within the past five seasons—the last coach who Atlanta hired that had that experience as a head coach was Dan Reeves—and has plenty of connections to build a staff. In essence, the Falcons chose Stefanski because of who he is (or at least who they believe him to be), his track record as an offensive mind and experience as a head coach, and because they believe he’ll be a stabilizing force for a franchise that has been anything but stable. Why it might work Start with the run game. Stefanski prizes a good one, has been able to get the most out of not just great players like Nick Chubb but also lesser lights…
