First lightning bolts discovered on Mars in NASA breakthrough

Nasa scientists believe they have detected electrical activity on Mars (Picture: Getty Images) Nasa scientists believe they recorded electrical activity in the Martian atmosphere. Electrical discharges – the release and transmission of electricity through an insulating medium – were found in audio and electromagnetic recordings by a NASA robot. The space agency’s Perseverance rover was sent to Mars in search of since of biology. But the miniature lightning bolts, described as ‘little zaps’ similar to ‘static electrcity’ was detected by the robot’s SuperCam – a suite of remote-sensing instruments. The SuperCam performs remote analyses of rocks and soils with a camera, two lasers and four spectrometres – a scientific instrument use to separate and measure the comments of a ‘physical phenomenon’. Lead author of the research Dr Baptiste Chide said: ‘These discharges represent a major discovery, with direct implications for Martian atmospheric chemistry, climate, habitability and the future of robotic and human exploration.’ A dust devil on Mars (Picture: Nasa) Nasa rover Perseverance on Mars in July 2024, where it has been stationed since 2021 (Picture: AP) The miniature lightning bolts were smaller than those on Earth but could interfere with the instruments, landers and space suits of astronauts on Mars. Scientists suspected that the planet’s dust storms and ‘dust devils’, small whirlwinds that form from hot air rising from the ground, might generate electrical activity. Now, they hope new instruments for measuring electrical discharges could be sent to confirm what they found. The discovery came from a microphone that was inadvertently recording the sounds of lightning. Dr Chidesaid they were ‘little zaps’ similar to ‘what you might feel in dry weather when you touch your car door and there’s a bit of static electricity’. When tiny grains of dust rub against each other, they become charged with electrons and release energy in tiny electrical arcs around a few centimetres or millimetres long. This creates an audible shock wave. These discharges happen ‘all the time and everywhere’ on Mars, according to Dr Chine. Perseverance has previously transmitted other sounds, including the crunch of its wheels landing on Mars’ surface as well as the whir of the blades of its no longer flying helicopter counterpart, Ingenuity. The rover has been scanning a dry river delta on the planet since 2021. It has collecting rock samples in a search for signs of microscopic ancient life, with Nasa currently exploring cost effective methods for transporting them to Earth. British granddad who ‘tried to drown daughter-in-law in pool on holiday’ avoids jail

Mark Gibbon was arrested after trying to drown his daughter-in-law Jasmine Wyld on holiday in Florida (Picture: Polk County Sheriff’s Office) A granddad who tried to drown his daughter-in-law during a holiday in Florida will not face any jail time. Mark Gibbon was staying with family at the Solterra Resort in Florida when an argument is said to have broken out over a will. Gibbon, a granddad from Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, allegedly tried to push his daughter-in-law, Jasmine Wyld, 33, under the water, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. His nine-year-old granddaughter attempted to save her mum and jumped into the pool, but Gibbon pushed her away, police said. He reportedly paid $26,000 to be released under bail and pleaded guilty to battery, with second-degree murder and strangulation charges dropped. Sign up for all of the latest stories Start your day informed with Metro's News Updates newsletter or get Breaking News alerts the moment it happens. Despite him attacking her, Wyld had asked for Gibbon to be released and returned to the UK, saying he had been ‘punished enough’, Sky News reports. The State Attorney’s Office said: ‘The victim informed our office that she felt the defendant had been punished enough and she desired that he be allowed to return to England and have contact with her and her daughter. ‘She had no fear of him. The defendant completed an anger management course and was adjudicated guilty of battery.’ It was revealed by the Daily Mail that Gibbon and Wyld have been in a relationship for the last two years after both of their marriages broke down. Wyld shares two children with Gibbon’s son Alex, who is said to be estranged from his father. A family source told the Daily Mail: ‘Mark and Jasmine have been seeing each other for a few years, but they’ve never admitted it. ‘Alex and his dad don’t speak at all. There have been a number of issues within the family. ‘He feels an awful betrayal at how his dad has struck up a relationship with the mother of his two children.’ Two years ago Alex Gibbon, 34, pleaded guilty to hitting his father with an £80,000 Porsche after he separated from Ms Wyld. Alex also pleaded guilty to harassing Wyld, according to the Times. Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source
