Broward County School Board to vote on closing seven schools
The Broward County School Board is expected to decide on closing several public schools amid declining enrollment on Wednesday. Superintendent Howard Hepburn said the closures are necessary to save money in a district that currently has more than 50,000 open seats. He also said the school board would move the students in a way that causes the least amount of disruption. “It’s a tough decision, but it’s a decision that we have to make to really ensure that the quality of learning opportunities that our students receive day in and day out does not change,” he said. Even if the school board goes along with the proposal, the superintendent is not ruling out having to close more schools in the future. The schools being considered for closing are: Sunshine Elementary North Fork Elementary Palm Cove Elementary Panther Run Elementary Bair Middle School Plantation Middle School Seagull Alternative High School. The school board vote is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
