A preliminary 2.7 magnitude earthquake struck near Santa Rosa, according to the United States Geological Survey. The quake, which hit at 6:03 a.m., was centered 4.5 miles east-southeast of Santa Rosa and 6.4 north-northeast of Rohnert Park, the USGS said. Further information was not immediately available. Oakland mayor to announce move to boost police staffing
With multi-year projections of massive budget shortfalls, Oakland and the mayor are turning to private funding in a joint effort to boost the city’s police staffing. Mayor Barbara Lee said she will announce a joint public-private partnership to help fund police Wednesday morning during a press conference at Oakland City Hall. Last week, a new class of 14 Oakland Police Department officers graduated from the police academy. The mayor then spoke about how OPD staffing is critically low. The Oakland Police Officer’s Union accused the city of defunding OPD, saying only 490 officers are available when 877 are needed. The union also called for the hiring of 387 new recruits to fill the gap. Thom Jensen has the full report in the video above.

Crews put out fire involving multiple vehicles near downtown San Jose
A fire investigation is underway after three cars were found burning near downtown San Jose early Wednesday morning. Fire crews were called in to West San Carlos Street just before 3 a.m. On arrival, crews found three cars engulfed in flames. Firefighters were able to put them out before the fire spread to nearby buildings. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
