Denise O’Sullivan Scores On Debut: “Nice To Get On The Scoresheet”
Liverpool Women continued a streak of wins outside of the league on Sunday when they heartily dispatched London Bees 6-0 away from home in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup. New signings Denise O’Sullivan and Martha Thomas led the line and both got on the scoresheet in their debuts with the club, having only signed contracts the day before. “I think getting out there with the girls and showing what we want to do in the game was nice and to get a feel for that and get some touches on the ball. It was a nice win in the end and I’m proud of the team,” O’Sullivan told the club website of her debut match. “It was really good.” O’ Sullivan joined on a permanent deal from the NWSL side NC Courage for a record fee of £300,000, having featured for the Republic of Ireland 128 times and holding the record number of appearances for the Courage. Little else is better than scoring on your debut for a club so quickly after signing, and it was O’Sullivan’s goal that opened the scoring for the Reds on Sunday. “I think out on that left side I was connecting with Ceri [Holland] throughout the game doing one-twos,” the midfielder explained. “She got on the end of it and crossed it in and I joined in and put it away. I want to get more goals and assists. It was nice to get on the scoresheet but now I have to keep going.” It does have to be said that London Bees are in the third tier of Women’s football, and so even with all of their issues, one would hope that Liverpool would be able to pull out a win against them. That doesn’t mean anyone would be expecting to go there and win, though, and O’Sullivan gave the hosts their praises. “You have to go out and play the team that’s on the pitch. It’s always going to be difficult,” O’Sullivan continued. “They sat in a low block and made it tough at times and we had to be patient and that’s what Gareth [Taylor] said before the game – just to be patient on the ball and keep it moving and move them around. I think we did well and the girls that came on the pitch were excellent. We’re looking forward now to the game next week [against Tottenham].” O’Sullivan wasn’t the only one to make a marker on the day, as Academy member Maizie Trueman made her debut for the club and became the youngest player ever. Even in the FA Cup that kind of mantle can bring a lot of pressure, but O’Sullivan had only good things to say for the kid. “I thought she was very composed. Maizie has been really good,” O’Sullivan said. “She’s very comfortable and she’s just a kid but she’s willing to learn and that’s what you want in and around the team. I thought she did really well. She’s brave on the ball and a very technical player. I think the future is bright for her.” Liverpool Women next play Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday January 25th, at St. Helen’s Stadium as they return to league action and continue looking for their first win of the campaign.
