Comment on Meta Launches Dev Competition with $1.5M Prize Pool, Focusing on Casual & Social VR Content by TonyVT SkarredGhost

I appreciate Meta finally funding again VR content. But I'm not completely a big fan of this hackathon format. Professional teams should commit to work for free full time for a month, without any guarantee of seeing any money back. One hackathon is fine, one month can be an investment, but many of them is not sustainable

Comment on Cambridge & Meta Study Raises the Bar for ‘Retinal Resolution’ in XR by Christian Schildwaechter

Seeing more details not only requires very good eye sight and looking straight forward, but also not moving the head and looking at a static object. There may be (some) room for improvements beyond 60PPD for productivity apps that require seeing fine details/text fixed in space. But it would be wasted on things like games with lots of head, object and world movement, where not even the person with they best vision in…

Comment on Cambridge & Meta Study Raises the Bar for ‘Retinal Resolution’ in XR by Christian Schildwaechter

I hadn't heard about Almalence DLVR, and thanks to your comment I now found out that just last month they also released an open sourced eye tracking solution on GitHub. It promises the same aberrations and distortion compensation as their OpenXR plugin while only consuming 2% of the compute power on an XR2 Gen 2, so a lot less resource hungry than Meta's implementation on the Quest Pro, and therefore more suitable for mobile HMDs. The (no longer supported) OpenXR plugin seems to mostly add eye tracked supersampling to what ETFR/DFR usually does. Kind of a logical extension to reducing the render resolution outside of the foveated area, using the gained compute to increase the perceived resolution inside the foveated area.

This has been sort of solved since 2016, when Ubisoft released Eagle Flight for PCVR/PSVR, a 1st person "eagle in Paris" simulator using head movement as its primary control. Its locomotion approach made it a prime candidate for triggering motion sickness. Ubisoft as an AAA studio wanted to ensure comfort, so they did a lot of research and ended up with two main solutions. First they always showed the eagle's beak…

What a complete f**king joke! Now I’ve spent $500 on a brick because Facebook want to control what my child can and cannot do. Who TF are they to determine what a child can do. I get that the FB account needs to be 13 … But then, DONT FORCE A FB TO USE THE F**KING DEVICE!!!.

It’s clear.. Oculus headset shouldn’t require FB account and they should not be connected. Stupid how your 400 dollar device can end up locked because some scammer in brasil hacked your account and you’re stuck negotiating with bots on trying to get your account back.

I do believe that is what they were originally asked to do by said parents. I don’t know whether they are actually doing as requested.
