Welcome to the end of the Jeff Hafley era. Matt LaFleur is newly re-signed in Green Bay, but already he faces a big challenge: replacing Hafley as the Packers’ defensive coordinator. Hafley, the darkest of dark horse candidates when he was hired in 2024, leaves some big shoes to fill, especially as the Packers look to rebound from a disappointing end to the 2025 season.  With Micah Parsons returning from a torn ACL and other promising pieces in place, the job should be desirable, especially considering that if the Packers’ offense does its job, the defense should have a fairly simple directive. Of course, that was the exact problem with the 2025 Packers; the offense frequently let down the defense, and unless they figure out that problem, whoever they hire as their defensive coordinator is probably going to have the same headaches Hafley had. Regardless, it’s clearly important that the Packers nail this hire. They’re in a title window, and getting their ducks in a row on defense is a huge part of getting across the finish line. They’ve been close before, but haven’t been able to seal the deal. Maybe the next defensive coordinator, whoever he is, can help avoid that same fate.
