Bill to wreck Ali Act passes committee, heads to House floor
As expected, H.R. 4624, the “Muhammad Ali American Boxing Revival Act” championed by Dana White and Turki Alalshikh, passed the House Committee on Education and the Workforce this afternoon. The bill passed 30-4, with Representatives Joe Courtney (D-CT), Frederica S. Wilson (D-FL), Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), and Mark Takano (D-CA) all voting against. The bill now heads to the House floor, where it must pass with a simple majority. It would then need to pass the Senate with 60 votes before heading to the President’s desk. This figures to take a while, as both bodies are presently in a mad scramble to pass spending bills and stave off another government shutdown by January 30th. Adjustments to the bill in Committee, per Luke Thomas, included increased per-round minimums, increased insurance minimums, “more explicit anti-doping requirements,” and a “baseline of two ambulances and two doctors to be continuously present at professional boxing matches.” Of particular note was an amendment from Ilhan Omar, who’s proven that she knows ball, which would require Unified Boxing Organizations (UBOs) to provide fighters a minimum of one fight every six months and allow them to communicate with other UBOs or promoters. More adjustments can be made on the House floor before passage, which ranking member Bobby Scott (D-VA) recommended. Even putting aside the anticompetitive nature of this legislation, John S. Nash notes that the increased costs this bill demands could very quickly sink smaller promoters. Quite a lot of work still needs to be done to make this anything but a disaster, so be sure to contact your representatives and speak out against it.

Tyson Fury plans April return, Arslanbek Makhmudov among potential opponents
With Tyson Fury intending to end his retirement once again and return to the boxing ring, his manager Spencer Brown tells Sky Sports that they are aiming for an April fight date, believing that a formal announcement will come imminently. And as Team Fury weigh their options for potential comeback opponents, Arslanbek Makhmudov was specifically named a one of the final candidates for the assignment. “We’re looking at five or six different opponents,” Brown told Sky Sports News. “[Makhmudov] is in the top three or four, most definitely. That’s not for me to announce. The promoters will announce that; everybody is working very hard to get this fight under way.” Makhmudov (21-2, 19 KOs), 36, has won two straight fights since dropping a summer 2024 fight against Guido Vianello, most recently taking a unanimous decision win over David Allen this past October. Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs) hasn’t fought since back-to-back defeats at the hands of Oleksandr Usyk in 2024, although he still firmly believes he deserved to win the decision in those fights despite being in the firm minority by almost all accounts.

Deontay Wilder vs Derek Chisora in play for April
Despite Oleksandr Usyk openly targeting a fight against former WBC titleholder Deontay Wilder, longtime boxing reporter Dan Rafael cites his sources that a Deontay Wilder vs Derek Chisora fight is in the midst of being finalized for April in London. This represents an potential unexpected turn of events as even the WBC had paved way for Usyk to defend against Wilder, despite recently mentioning that they hadn’t received particulars on that proposed fight. If Wilder were to face Chisora instead of Usyk, it would represent a much more intriguing fight due to their blend of styles, combined with the fact that no one really gives Wilder any shot in his current form to offer up much resistance to Usyk. Then, if Wilder were to beat Chisora it could potentially bolster a fight with Usyk for later this year — but that’s all really up in the air as so much could happen between now and then For now, this Wilder vs Chisora fight report sort of comes out of nowhere, but that’s hardly a new phenomena in this sport, but it’s likely to be better received by fans. We’ll update you all as soon as more information becomes available.
