Chiefs Latest Coaching Move Will Make Patrick Mahomes Thrilled
The Kansas City Chiefs endured one of their most disappointing seasons in recent memory in 2025. After enjoying a run of dominance that coincided with the start of Patrick Mahomes‘ career, the Chiefs missed the playoffs entirely this season, with Mahomes suffering a torn ACL late in the year that could cause him to miss time to start the 2026 campaign.Assuming all goes according to plan for Mahomes with his injury rehab, he should be back on the field early next season. And when he returns, Kansas City is intent on making sure what happened this year does not happen again. As a result, head coach Andy Reid is revamping his coaching staff, and it sounds like old friend Eric Bieniemy is going to be returning to town.Chiefs Set to Hire Eric Bieniemy as New Offensive Coordinator Reunion: All signs are pointing towards Eric Bieniemy returning to the Chiefs as their offensive coordinator, sources say. With Matt Nagy out of contract and in the head coaching mix, Kansas City plans to bring back Bieniemy, a valued member of Andy Reid’s staff from 2013-22. pic.twitter.com/VtsYJxZ2xR — Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) January 19, 2026 Early in his career, Mahomes benefited greatly from having a stable coaching setup that featured Reid and head coach and Bieniemy as his offensive coordinator. As we all know, Mahomes would go on to enjoy a historic start to his career, with Reid and Bieniemy obviously playing a large role in helping his development. After the 2022 season, Bieniemy jumped ship and joined the Washington Commanders, where he worked as their associate head coach and offensive coordinator. He only lasted one season with them before he transitioned to college football, where he worked in the same role with the UCLA Bruins in 2024. After one year there, he returned to the NFL, working as a running backs coach for the Chicago Bears. With the Bears getting eliminated from the playoffs on Sunday night, and Chiefs’ offensive coordinator Matt Nagy being out of contract, that opened the door for Bieniemy to reunite with Kansas City. After reports emerged early on Monday linking the two sides to one another, it appears as if a deal has been hammered out.“Reunion: All signs are pointing towards Eric Bieniemy returning to the Chiefs as their offensive coordinator, sources say,” Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported. “With Matt Nagy out of contract and in the head coaching mix, Kansas City plans to bring back Bieniemy, a valued member of Andy Reid’s staff from 2013-22.”Chiefs Hoping Eric Bieniemy Can Help Get Offense Back on Track GettyThe Chiefs are reportedly set to bring Eric Bieniemy back to town to be their new offensive coordinator Since Bieniemy’s departure, the Chiefs’ offense has struggled to reach the heights it hit during his time in charge. While they still made it to the Super Bowl in 2023 and 2024, missing the playoffs entirely this year let everyone know that something has to change. The hope is that with Bieniemy back, the offense will open up again in 2026 and beyond.Of course, the team around Mahomes needs to be better than it has been the past few years, which has set the stage for a very important offseason in Kansas City. Getting Bieniemy back is undoubtedly a big win, but it won’t mean much if the Chiefs don’t go out and reinforce their roster over the next few months. Like Heavy Sports's content? Buccaneers OC Search Linked to Coach Who Helped Shape Joe Burrow’s NFL Rise
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have officially added another intriguing name to their offensive coordinator search, one with direct ties to one of the NFLâs elite quarterbacks. According to NBC Sports, the Buccaneers will interview Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher for their vacant OC position this week.  Ian Rapoport reported that Bengals head coach Zac Taylor has granted Pitcher permission to speak with teams offering play-calling opportunities. The #Bucs will interview #Bengals offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher for their vacant OC job this week, sources say, an opportunity made possible by coach Zac Taylor giving Pitcher permission to speak to teams with play-calling OC opportunities. A significant development. pic.twitter.com/fX0zpxubsH — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) January 19, 2026 âThe Bucs will interview Bengals offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher for their vacant OC job this week, sources say,â Rapoport wrote. âAn opportunity made possible by coach Zac Taylor giving Pitcher permission to speak to teams with play-calling OC opportunities.â This is a notable development given Pitcherâs current role in Cincinnati. While Pitcher holds the offensive coordinator title with the Bengals, Taylor retains play-calling duties. This makes a move to Tampa Bay a potential step forward rather than a lateral shift. Pitcher is widely credited as a key contributor to Joe Burrowâs early NFL success. For the Buccaneers, it represents a clear signal that quarterback development is a priority in this hiring cycle. Dan Pitcherâs Role in Joe Burrowâs NFL Development Pitcherâs resume is closely tied to the rise of Joe Burrow. Pitcher joined the Bengalsâ staff in 2016 and became Burrowâs quarterbacks coach shortly before Cincinnati selected Burrow first overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. From Burrowâs rookie season through his ascent to Pro Bowls and a Super Bowl appearance, Pitcher played a central role. He was a huge part of weekly game planning, film study, and helping Burrow command Zac Taylorâs offense at an elite level.  That trust and continuity ultimately led to Pitcherâs promotion to offensive coordinator. This was a move designed to preserve the structure around Burrow as the franchise QB entered his prime. That QB background could be especially appealing to Tampa Bay, where Baker Mayfield showed flashes of high-level play but also endured stretches of inconsistency.  The Bucs appear to be prioritizing a coach with a proven track record of refining quarterback mechanics, preparation, and decision-making. All of these are areas where Pitcher has excelled at the NFL level. Where Pitcher Fits in the Buccaneersâ OC Search The Buccaneersâ offensive coordinator search is massive. Pitcher joins a growing list of experienced and creative offensive minds under consideration. Tampa Bay has already interviewed or expressed interest in candidates such as Todd Monken, Mike Kafka, Brian Callahan, Zac Robinson, David Shaw, Israel Woolfork, and Mike McDaniel.  Pitcherâs interview represents a different profile than the rest of the bunch. He brings a development-first profile rooted in quarterback growth. As the Buccaneers continue evaluating their options, the response Pitcherâs meeting this week will tell a lot about their OC search going forward.
