Report: Manchester United interested in former Bayern Munich coach Niko Kovač
Niko Kovač is thriving at Borussia Dortmund. Okay yes, Dortmund are currently in second place in the Bundesliga, but nobody can fault them for playing second fiddle to what could be the best individual season of any club in league history. It is still early days, but Bayern Munich are showing no signs of slowing down and, barring a catastrophe, are on course to win the treble. Manchester United, the spotlight of this report, is currently placed 5th in the Premier League and has appointed Michael Carrick to coach the team till the end of the season after sacking Ruben Amorim. Usually, few clubs rival Bayern Munich when it comes to changing coaches as if they were used underwear, but Manchester United can give them a run for their money. Unfortunately, changing coaches has never seemed to fix what seems to be more of a systemic issue in Manchester. Enter Kovač, master of the dark arts. According to Rudy Galetti (@RudyGaletti) of Sportitalia Mercato, Manchester United have included the Dortmund coach in their list of potential coaching options for the summer. 🚨🏴 EXCL | Man UTD have included Niko Kovac in their list of potential options for the summer as a new head coach.Chelsea also explored the Croatian manager before appointing Rosenior, but Kovac ruled out any mid-season exit from BVB.🔗 All the details on @TEAMtalk 👇 pic.twitter.com/EBxLh3cIEX— Rudy Galetti (@RudyGaletti) January 17, 2026 Interestingly, Chelsea also seems to have been interested in the coach before resorting to Rosenior after Kovač ruled out a midseason exit. The interest does make sense, however, since Kovač plays a heavy-on-defense, counter-attacking brand of football that emphasizes defensive stability, quick counters, an intense press without the ball, and inverted wing-backs to support the midfield. At this point, Manchester United might benefit from a Kovač-like coach, since this team has serious defensive issues. However, there is genuine doubt over whether the club can actually be fixed at this point. And that is where Kovač’s mystic arts come in—you would need miracles and magic to turn the tide around with this club. Do you think this would be a good signing for United?
