Matthew Farwell due back in court in Sandra Birchmore case

Former Stoughton Police Officer Matthew Farwell is due back in court Tuesday in connection with the Sandra Birchmore case. Farwell is scheduled to appear in federal court in Boston at 11 a.m. for a change of venue hearing. His lawyers have been pushing to move the trial out of state due to the amount of publicity the case has received. Farwell is charged with killing Birchmore and her unborn child, accused of strangling her and staging her death to look like a suicide. The 23-year-old Birchmore was found dead in her Canton apartment back in 2021. She was three months pregnant. Farwell is accused of initiating a relationship with Birchmore when she was 15 years old and he was 26. He resigned from the Stoughton Police Department in 2022. He has pleaded not guilty in connection with Birchmore’s death. Federal prosecutors said in a court filing last month that U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has directed the government not to seek the death penalty in this case. The judge had given prosecutors until Jan. 20, 2026 to decide if they would seek the death penalty. Farwell’s trial is scheduled for October. NH man accused of breaking into homes, pouring queso on TV, furniture

A New Hampshire man enrolled as a student at Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina is facing burglary charges after he allegedly broke into homes near the school’s campus and poured queso dip on someone’s television and furniture. Alec Arinello, 19, of Windham, New Hampshire, is charged with three counts of first-degree burglary in connection with the break-ins, which occurred in the early-morning hours of Jan. 14. He has since been released on bail. According to a police report, officers responded to a residence on Quail Run Road in Horry County, South Carolina, for a report of breaking and entering. When they arrived, police met with the caller, who told them that he and his girlfriend were sleeping when his girlfriend woke up to a man standing in their bedroom. The man noiced the caller and his giflfriend waking up and left the bedroom. The caller told police he then locked his bedroom door, not knowing if the intruder might be armed. Eventually, they heard the intruder leave the residence. The caller woke up his roommates, who began checking the neighborhood. They located the intruder a few houses away in a black SUV. The intruder eventually left the area. The caller returned to his residence and found that the intruder had gone through his fridge, removing items including queso, eggs and salsa. The man had poured queso on the TV and furniture in the living room, smashed eggs on the floor and flipped the furniture over. The caller said he believed the intruder was a Coastal Carolina University student, but said he doesn’t know him and he wasn’t invited over. After interviewing the caller, police said they noticed a black Jeep with New Hampshire plates parked in the area that was not there when officers arrived. They heard someone walking in the woods nearby and a man later identified as Arinello emerged from the woods. Police told him to stop, at which point he began running away. Officers set up a quick perimeter and were able to take him into custody without further incident. Several other residents showed up at the scene shortly thereafter and said that Arinello had also broken into their homes. One person said Arinello had broken into their home and stolen a marijuana bong. Another said he had broken in and poured maple syrup over their TV, speakers and throughout the house. A third person said Arinello had attempted to make entry but couldn’t get in because the doors were locked. He then went to a neighbor’s house and attempted to break in there, but was met with another locked door and ran away. Two other residents reported similar break ins. Inside Arinello’s vehicle, police found golf clubs, a marijuana bong and a Corona bar light, all of which were collected as postential evidence in the case. Coastal Carolina University student Brian Rose was among the residents whose home was broken into. Although he didn’t see what happened, he told NBC affiliate WBTW he was in the home when the break-in occurred. “I hear the door go boom. And I’m like, ‘What’s that?’” Rose said. “Because I thought it was my buddy… coming home from the bar. Nope, it was the milkman. It was the milk bandit. And I didn’t think anything of it. Went to the bathroom, went back to bed. Woke up the next morning, milk everywhere.” Rose said Arinello isn’t known to him or his roommates. “Total shot in the dark,” he said. “He just came out of nowhere. Didn’t know who he was.” More New Hampshire stories New Hampshire Jan 18 New Hampshire bishop warns clergy to prepare for ‘new era of martyrdom' New Hampshire Jan 18 2 skiers from Mass. rescued from deep snow, blizzard-like conditions in NH's White Moutains

Netflix amends Warner Bros. Discovery offer to all-cash amid Paramount's takeover bid

Netflix is revising its $72 billion offer for Warner Bros. Discovery to make it an all-cash transaction. Netflix initially put forth a cash and stock deal valued at $27.75 per Warner Bros. share, giving it a total enterprise value of $82.7 billion, including debt. Netflix and Warner Bros. said Tuesday that the revised deal simplifies the transaction structure, provides more certainty of value for Warner Bros. stockholders and speeds up the path to a Warner Bros. shareholder vote. The companies said that the all-cash transaction is still valued at $27.75 per Warner Bros. share. Warner Bros. stockholders will also receive the additional value of shares of Discovery Global following its separation from Warner Bros. Both companies’ boards approved the amended all-cash deal. Media Jan 7 Warner Bros rejects Paramount bid again and tells shareholders stick to Netflix Media Dec 22, 2025 Paramount beefs up its bid for Warner Bros. Discovery with new Larry Ellison guarantee Donald Trump Dec 10, 2025 Trump says CNN should be sold as part of any Warner Bros. deal Netflix’s stock rose 1.3% before the market open, while shares of Warner Bros. Discovery fell slightly. Netflix has been in a tussle with Paramount Skydance for Warner Bros., with Paramount taking another step in its hostile takeover bid of Warner Bros. last week, saying that it would name its own slate of directors before the next shareholder meeting of the Hollywood studio. Warner’s leadership has repeatedly rebuffed Skydance-owned Paramount’s overtures — and urged shareholders just weeks ago to back its the sale of its streaming and studio business to Netflix. Warner Bros. Discovery said earlier this month that its board determined Paramount’s offer is not in the best interests of the company or its shareholders. It again recommended shareholders support the Netflix deal. Late last month, Paramount announced an “irrevocable personal guarantee” from Oracle founder Larry Ellison — who is the father of Paramount CEO David Ellison — to back $40.4 billion in equity financing for the company’s offer. Paramount also increased its promised payout to shareholders to $5.8 billion if the deal is blocked by regulators, matching Netflix’s breakup fee. In a letter to shareholders, Warner expressed concerns about a potential deal with Paramount. Warner said it essentially considers the offer a leveraged buyout, which includes a lot of debt, and also pointed to operating restrictions that it said were imposed by Paramount’s offer and could “hamper WBD’s ability to perform” throughout a transaction. The battle for Warner and the value of each offer grows complicated because Netflix and Paramount want different things. Netflix’s proposed acquisition includes only Warner’s studio and streaming business, including its legacy TV and movie production arms and platforms like HBO Max. But Paramount wants the entire company — which, beyond studio and streaming, includes networks like CNN and Discovery. If Netflix is successful, Warner’s news and cable operations would be spun off into their own company, under a previously-announced separation. A merger with either company could take over a year to close — and will attract tremendous antitrust scrutiny along the way. Due to its size and potential impact, it will almost certainly trigger a review by the U.S. Justice Department, which could sue to block the transaction or request changes. Other countries and regulators overseas may also challenge the merger. And politics are expected to come into play under President Donald Trump, who has made unprecedented suggestions about his personal involvement on whether a deal will go through.
