The MAI-KAI brings bold, strong flavors with new spirit, Mai-Kai Rum No. 1
Dancers in grass skirts, tropical vibes and rum flowing nonstop. No, it’s not Lynn’s Wednesday night, it’s The MAI-KAI. Fort Lauderdale’s MAI-KAI is known for rum drinks, and now they’re really getting in the spirit. Our rum-soaked reporter Alex Miranda has the story. The MAI-KAI, the iconic South Florida restaurant, now has its very own branded rum. This is not your grandpa’s Bacardi — this is strong, funky, flavorful rum that’s designed to wake up your taste buds. Deco went for an exclusive tasting. The MAI-KAI Fort Lauderdale is a one-of-a-kind Polynesian party. Guests come from around the world for the drinks, the food and, of course, the amazing show. Now, The MAI-KAI is getting into the rum game. Kern Mattei: “For many, many years, we’ve always been in search of the best rum we can to feature in our drinks. During the Reconstruction, one of the ideas was, ‘Why don’t we create our own rum to try and replicate those rums we used in the past.'” With that idea, Mai-Kai Rum No. 1 was born. Light rum, this is not. We’re talking 100 proof with a big, bold flavor. Robert Burr: “We haven’t seen this style of rum for 50 years. Mr. Bacardi wanted a clean, clear rum that had almost no flavor, that wouldn’t get in the way of fine cocktails. This was just the opposite, this was rich, bold, rustic rums that defined the flavor of a cocktail. The new spirit will play a starring role in The MAI-KAI’s signature cocktails, including this bowl of tropical goodness: the Sidewinder’s Fang. Better call an Uber. Guest: “It’s actually really good, not gonna lie!” It’s a drink big enough for two. Or one. Guest: “I think it’s a really good one to share, unless you really wanted to by yourself, you can. I feel like I could, but I wouldn’t recommend.” If you want to create your own tiki paradise at home, try the Mai-Tai No. 1. Corey Star: “We’re at the beautiful Bora Bora Bar and I’m gonna be making the Mai-Tai No 1. Secret spices, juices, elixirs inside of here. Not-so-secret here, this is the Mai-Kai Rum No. 1. One thing we do with a tiki cocktail is garnish. Mint’s very important here. Pineapple to munch on. There we are: Mai-Tai No. 1.” Don’t go looking for this bottle at your local liquor store. Right now it’s only available at The MAI-KAI gift shop. Sounds like the perfect excuse to take your taste buds on a tropical treasure hunt! Kern Mattei: “When you come to The MAI-KAI to get the full experience, you can join us in the Molokai Bar, have a few cocktails, also make reservations for the dinner and a show. You can make a whole night out of it, almost like a mini vacay right here in Fort Lauderdale.” The Mai-Kai Rum No. 1 sells for $70 per liter. Right now, it’s only available at the gift shop. Kathleen Kennedy, steward of ‘Star Wars,’ steps down from Lucasfilm
After more than 13 years at the helm of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy is stepping down from the “Star Wars” factory founded by George Lucas. The Walt Disney Co. announced Thursday that it will now turn to Dave Filoni to steer “Star Wars,” as president and chief creative officer, into its sixth decade and beyond. Filoni, who served as the chief commercial officer of Lucasfilm, will inherit the mantle of one of the movies marquee franchises, alongside Lynwen Brennan, president and general manager of Lucasfilm’s businesses, who will serve as co-president. “When George Lucas asked me to take over Lucasfilm upon his retirement, I couldn’t have imagined what lay ahead,” said Kennedy. “It has been a true privilege to spend more than a decade working alongside the extraordinary talent at Lucasfilm.” Kennedy, Lucas’ handpicked successor, had presided over the ever-expanding science-fiction world of “Star Wars” since Disney acquired it in 2012. In announcing Thursday’s news, Bob Iger, chief executive officer of the Walt Disney Co. called her “a visionary filmmaker.” Kennedy oversaw a highly lucrative but often contentious period in “Star Wars” history that yielded a blockbuster trilogy and acclaimed streaming spinoffs such as “The Mandalorian” and “Andor,” yet found increasing frustration from longtime fans. Under Kennedy’s stewardship, Lucasfilm amassed more than $5.6 billion in box office and helped establish Disney+ as a streaming destination — achievements that easily validated the $4.05 billion Disney plunked down for the company. But Kennedy also struggled to deliver the big-screen magic that Lucas captured in the original trilogy from the late 1970s and early 1980s, and her relationship with “Star Wars” loyalists became a saga of its own. Filoni has established himself almost entirely on the small screen, entering the franchise with the animated series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and creating the tepidly received Disney+ series “Ahsoka.” Filoni, who first collaborated with Lucas on “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” has also been an executive producer on “The Mandalorian,” “The Book of Boba Fett” and “Skeleton Crew.” Both will report to Alan Bergman, Disney Entertainment co-chairman. “From Rey to Grogu, Kathy has overseen the greatest expansion in Star Wars storytelling on-screen that we have ever seen,” said Filoni. “I am incredibly grateful to Kathy, George, Bob Iger, and Alan Bergman for their trust and the opportunity to lead Lucasfilm in this new role, doing a job I truly love. May the Force be with you.” Before joining Lucasfilm, Kennedy was one of Hollywood’s most successful producers ever. In 1981, she co-founded Amblin Entertainment with Steven Spielberg and her eventual husband, Frank Marshall. She produced “E.T.,” “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” “Jurassic Park” and the “Back to the Future” trilogy. At Lucasfilm, her biggest hit came at the start, with 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” The J.J. Abrams-directed film grossed more than $2 billion worldwide. But the subsequent installment, Rian Johnson’s “The Last Jedi” (2017), was bitterly divisive. The third film, Abrams’ “The Rise of Skywalker” (2019), was widely panned by critics and fans, alike. After “The Rise of Skywalker,” “Star Wars” went dark on the big screen despite a litany of announced projects. The dry spell is set to be broken in May by Jon Favreau’s “The Mandalorian & Grogu.” The intervening years have been marked by streaming successes in “The Mandalorian” and “Andor,” but the future of “Star Wars” has felt increasingly uncertain. Struggles over tone and vision have been frequent. The 2018 Han Solo spinoff “Solo: A Star Wars Story” saw its directors, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, fired during production and replaced by Ron Howard. Most found the mixed-and-matched result blandly disappointing. More recently, Adam Driver, who played Kylo Ren/Ben Solo in the most recent “Star Wars” trilogy,” divulged to The Associated Press last year that he…

Visit Lauderdale Food & Wine Festival returns with crafty cocktails, plant-based options for everyone to enjoy
According to the calendar, 2026 got underway 15 days ago. But you can’t fool SoFlo foodies. They know the real kick-off to the new year is the 7th annual Visit Lauderdale Food & Wine Festival next week. Hungry for the deets? We’ve got ’em all. Hope you’re ready to party. The Visit Lauderdale Food & Wine Festival is back in town. Kate Reed: “This is 35 events during our festival week which is representing all different types of restaurants as far as mixologists and chefs throughout Broward County.” The event puts local food and drink providers center-stage. Kate Reed: “This is a chance for the spotlight to be on the hospitality scene in Broward. We really try to draw attention to the amazing talent we have in the area and the festival is just a way to be concentrated during event week.” Looking for big-time barbecue? Super sliders? Big beers? Crafty cocktails? They’re all here and there’s more. Kate Reed: “This year we’re expanding our plant-based options. There are wellness seminars, plant-based pairing. We have a plant-based dinner.” If you’re thinking tofu, think again. Some truly tasty treats are waiting for you. Joshua Mattey: “We have a plant-based salmon, we have plant-based steak. We have plant-based burgers. All stuff that we never had.” That goes for allergen-free wines, as well. The vino comes from The Vintage on Harrison in Hollywood. Tal Cohen: “We are going for freshness. All four of the wines that we’ve selected have perky acidity in the center that are there to kind of help allow the palate to reset.” Pompano Beach is represented by The Rabbit Hole. You can tell what they’re into right away. Chef Sam Woods: “You know that’s our goal right? Is to create food experiences that if i was to blindfold you, you wouldn’t whether it’s vegan or not.” Chef Sam put together the menu for the plant-based collab dinner. He’s happy with the first course, “Florida Finest.” Chef Sam Woods: “It is a star fruit citrus salad. Being in Florida, the orange capitol of the world, you know, we thought it was only right to start the menu and open it up with something that was representative of that.” The salad is topped off with vegan salmon. Over at Fort Lauderdale’s Blue Tree Cafe, a chili to die for is making its debut at the festival’s grand tasting. Chef Sharon Allen: “We decided to present it because it’s heart-healthy. The lentils are the star of the show and it tastes great.” The chili was created by Chef Sharon and her daughter, actress Nika King. It’s incredibly healthy and you’ll get an extra somethin’-somethin’ with every cup. Nika King: “My mom is super about putting ingredients. The chili has tomatoes and lentils and kidney beans and chili beans and it’s so nutritious for you and it comes with cornbread.” There are a lot of events going on at the Visit Lauderdale Food & Wine Festival.
