Bayern faced Aston Villa, a side they have lost to twice in the UEFA Champions League, and most recently in 2024. This time, the stakes are much lower as the Audi Cup is merely a friendly. Nonetheless the Bavarians went in with the intent of winning and so they did. The first goal came from a free-kick and was ultimately scored by Kim Min-Jae and the second was a phenomenal shot from Luis Díaz. Though they conceded a goal towards the end of the game, Manuel Neuer’s efforts ensured that Bayern went home with a win and a trophy. Here are the observations from the game. It was a showdown…kind of The stakes may have been low, but manager Vincent Kompany certainly treated the game a bit differently than the fixtures prior. He fielded a starting lineup with only three players from Bayern II— Arijon Ibrahimović, Tim Binder, and Maycon Cardozo. Cardozo plays a pretty physical game and has a few errors but his ceiling is rather high. Binder plays fast-paced, direct football and enjoys attacking and was one of the bright spots from the unfortunate loss against Wiesbaden. From the beginning, it was evident that Bayern were the dominant side. Barring a few questionable decisions, they were attacking and thriving. It was Villa’s haphazard yet determined defending that kept the Bavarians at bay for the longest. Villa did not offer much tactically, but were relentless and brought in their numbers to defend. A shapeless bus parked in the box left Bayern unable to score from open-play for the longest time. To their credit, the side from Birmingham too had fielded partly B-team players with a few starters like Matty Cash, Victor Lindelöf, Boubacar Kamara, Emiliano Buendía, Pau Torres and Ian Maatsen. A pattern becomes evident — all of the seasoned players on Villa’s side were defenders and midfielders, which is why they were able to hold their own in their box, if not attack too well. The goalkeeper Marco Bizot deserves a shout for saving two crucial shots nearing half-time. The best in Bayern’s roster was arguably Tom Bischof. It is simply unbelievable that a player of his caliber did not get called up to the World Cup. He held the team together structurally and his free kicks are near-perfect. It was in fact, his free-kick that Kim Min-Jae scored from. He’s consistently in the right places to get the ball, he controlled the game tempo and he somehow always knows where the next pass goes. Decision makers like that DESERVE to start games in their natural position. As for the rest, there is not much to say. Kim Min-jae and Jonathan Tah both had modestly easy games. Nathaniel Brown was decent. Aleksander Pavlović continues to prove that he is an exceptional homegrown midfielder. But why was Konrad Laimer playing striker? “But why was he playing there?” One can only wonder why Konrad Laimer was the striker in this fixture. Laimer looked confused in his position, not sure on how far he should go up and in fact, was often alongside Ibrahimović who looked more comfortable up top than the Austrian. If I am to understand correctly, Laimer was playing up top to make space for Sacha Boey, who is perhaps getting one last chance at proving himself (or at least showcasing himself for a transfer). But, given how spectacularly Boey proceeded to blow this chance, it would have made more sense to rearrange the setup. The Frenchman is mediocre at his position and was in fact the weakest link in the entire team — much worse than an out-of-position Laimer. Villa’s few attacks went through his side and he had little to offer even in attack. Boey’s substitution,…

Asked where he expects to play this season, the Austrian made it clear that he is happy wherever he is needed. “I have no idea. I feel comfortable in a lot of different positions. Over the last two years, I’ve mostly played at right-back, but also occasionally at left-back. I think I can help the team there with my qualities. Where I play doesn’t matter to me, as long as I’m out on the pitch,” Laimer said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). That team-first mentality has become one of Laimer’s defining characteristics since arriving at Bayern Munich. Whether deployed in midfield, at right-back, or even on the left side of the defense, he approaches every role with the same intensity, energy, and commitment. In an era where many players have clear positional preferences, Laimer stands out for his willingness to adapt. His versatility gives Vincent Kompany valuable flexibility, but for Laimer, the role itself is almost irrelevant. As long as he is contributing on the pitch and helping Bayern Munich win, he is satisfied. That selfless attitude is one of the many reasons he has become such an important player for the club. Unable to secure a happy return to Galatasaray in part due to league registration rules, he has returned to Bayern Munich only to be told very clearly by officials that the club wishes to sell him. It would be enough to make anybody upset. Still, he has participated in preseason and played in every friendly to date. The latest, a 2-1 win over Aston Villa, saw him take a knock and leave the field early. Suspecting an injury, the press asked Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany about the potential injury were met with good news. “I spoke to Sacha. He seems to be fine,” Kompany revealed (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “He just took a kick. I thought he was very good. Sacha’s situation is clear – the club communicated it clearly. We’re looking for a solution. But in the end, to train and play the way he did, is part of things that impressed me. He’s giving everything. Of course you expect a professional player to do that. But I’ve seen many players in his situation who can’t do it. It was a positive performance by him.” There are many, many people in the world who would love to train at Bayern and be paid millions a year to do so, despite the frustration that comes with Boey’s situation, but Kompany succinctly pointing out how many players still fail to do well in such a situation. Gabriel Milito dejó en claro que el partido de este sábado será el más complicado de la Leagues Cup para Chivas. El debut de Chivas en la Leagues Cup 2026 dejó un sabor mucho más amargo que dulce. Aunque el Guadalajara fue superior durante gran parte del encuentro frente al LAFC, el dominio no se reflejó en el marcador y el equipo terminó empatando en los 90 minutos. Posteriormente cayó en la tanda de penales, por lo que solo sumó un punto, un resultado que obliga al Rebaño Sagrado a reaccionar de inmediato si quiere mantenerse con aspiraciones en el torneo. Ese panorama hace que los dos partidos restantes de la fase de grupos sean prácticamente finales para el equipo de Gabriel Milito. El formato de la competencia clasifica únicamente a los cuatro mejores clubes de la Liga MX y a los cuatro mejores de la MLS, por lo que Chivas, ubicado actualmente en la octava posición entre los equipos mexicanos, necesita vencer al FC Dallas para seguir dependiendo de sí mismo en la lucha por un boleto a la siguiente ronda.
